MaryeLovesYou part of it is that we pay for service in the wage per our for waiters/waitresses. In America that is not the case. So we already pay with the food for the service. We tip if we find that the service they gave was extra good or the food came quickly or it was better than expected. In America you have to pay for the service because that is not in the wage of the waiter/waitress.

It's a system, that maybe needs to change but it's very difficult to implement that. Here in the Netherlands, servers receive a 'normal' hourly rate, and are not dependend on tips. It's nice if you receive one, but it's just not necessary. When I was 17 I worked for $2 per hour. My tips were my lifeline.

We do give tips in restaurants (McDonalds is not a restaurant), but tipping works different. A waitres or waiter will get a wage over here, they do not have to survive on tips.

Interesting how a countries history/situation creates a culture. I think because in The Netherlands (throughout history) we have so many very different people jammed into such a small bit of land....we don't just share the land but we life on it together. In order to keep getting along we kinda had to become liberale/sociale. And you just have to get everything out in the open. So in order to deal with underlying issues the dutch tend to be viewed as blunt (by international standards)...but its not meant to insult its just saying it like it is and getting a dialog going. We HAD TO keep very different people working together (cause our big neighbours kept on attacking us and the ocean kept on invading the land). Thats why major cultural ideas like for example gay marriage started in the Netherlands.....an issues comes up...we have a vivid discussion and we make up our oppinion (even if the rest of the world thinks we are nuts). It kinda explains Dutch culture very well....which is also why we are one of the founders of the EU.....we want everybody to get allong. Lol I think your POV on the Dutch is the most correct one I've come across. Usually you only hear the stereotypes...cheese...farming...drugs...red light district..WO II. So thanks.

A difference with America is that waiters in the Netherlands have a minimum wage and are not depending of their tips. What I really miss when were in the US is that you cannot jump on your bike, and go to the grocery store.. everything takes a lot of time in the US. But the space.. I love it! As others have said below, the tipping really isn't an attitude thing. In a way the tip is implicitly included in the bill already. As a waiter in the USA you get a different deal financially, leading to a reliance on tips that simpy doesn't exist in the Netherlands.

As an American. The reason I've gathered for our "huge" food is that we want the meal to suffice for at least 8 hours. The thing is, not many American's (especially American women)eat everything we're given upfront. We keep the rest as leftovers. And it's no secret that we LOVE leftovers.

Swedes have surströmming, Icelanders have kæstur hákarl, Norwegians have rakfisk, Koreans have hongeo, Japanese in the cold mountains have kusaya, the Nenet of Siberia eat raw fermented fish and the raw fermented guts of animals they keep, the Dutch have raw herring, and if in season the fatty ones, called Hollandse Nieuwe. If you need to up your cold resist you need to eat raw fermented fish. 2. Iceskating. This one is not required but very helpful. If you lack access to raw fermented fish you can always substitute with steak tartare, raw of course, with a raw eggyoke on top, I reccomend some capers and raw sharp onion on top for flavour. A breakfast of some salo with onion and a bit of Kimchi on the side is also a viable substitute.

We Dutchies ride our bikes in every season. We dress for it. In the winter we wrap ourselves in thick, warm coats, gloves, scarves etc. I don't have a car. I have a bicycle ;))

Dutch waiters usually make better money than US ones, so tips aren't part of their pay. Also, tipping in Holland is seen as being a bit of a suck-up. Waiter will probably think 'What? You want preferential treatment now?'

i've lived both in Canada ( Toronto ontario) and the Netherlands. In the Netherlands the prices of grocery shopping are much cheaper then in Canada and i think also cheaper the in the USA ... 2Liters milk NL = 0.98 euro canada= 4.50 CAD,.... and how much in USA (1/2 gallon) ..... in 2010 Dr oetker frozen pizza in NL 1.53 ( now 2.39) euro Canada = 6.50 CAD and USA ?? and not to mention the in NL the tax is included and north america is not ( BTW, PST/GST VAT)

julia noa We do! The difference is that in the US a tip is basically a normal thing, when I was there they had it printed on the receipt.. It's basically 5% of your total ammount that you ordered (right?!).. In the Netherlands its common that the wages for people working in the service industry are higher, so tips are not required. That's the difference. Usually people do actually give tips tho.. Perhaps not poorer people (students, younger families etc.) but in general people will give tips when in a restaurant for example.

Nowhere do they serve portion sizes like in the US. That's why we have "doggie bags" to take food home. The restaurants get better discounts if they buy more and so they push more food out.

I would love to live in the Netherlands I eat at home in the USA, so I would do the same most of the time in the Netherlands. Also, I bike to work and the grocery store, with my 21 month old kid as well. When I visited it felt like home in Amsterdam. I need to visit more areas. Particularly the best areas for living car free and cycling. One day we can rent our house out and move there.
