I spent a lot of time on construction sites both large and small. You guys are doing a spectacular job on a very ambitious project. You two inspire us all!! I have only one criticism---PLEASE DO NOT WEAR SANDALS while working on these projects. I know you guys are very careful--but risking an injury to a foot in such a remote area is not a good idea. In fact you both should invest in steel-toe boots--just as a precaution. Yes they are costly --but taking measures to be safe is worth it. Thanks so much for sharing your journey with us.

I absolutely agree. It’s way too easy to get a bad injury. When it’s your foot it really stops you doing things whilst it heals - and you are busy people :) I know it’s hot and you don’t want hot feet….. minty light weight moisturiser at the start of the day, change your socks at lunch time (if you get a lunchtime!) and it will help you get through the day. One of those larger stones on a toe - six weeks of pain, swelling and inability to keep up with the jobs whilst it heals :(

I really like that instead of focusing on making mistakes, you view them as learning experiences. That's a great attitude, and we see the fruits of it time and time again on your channel. You also don't let fear hold you back from tackling new projects. It's normal to have fear when doing something new, but you continue to forge ahead. You take the time to do the research and the Math ahead of time, and then do the best you can with the data, making changes along the way as necessary. Job well done!

@oldcarpenter2372

One item you might reconsider - the wood form beneath the drain will rot out over time. The way it is built, the drain frame will fall downward if there is rot or too much load is placed on it. Concrete should support the drain frame. I've done this hundreds of times> Build a wood form that fits loosely inside the metal frame. Drive a few nails around the perimeter of the form to support the metal frame at the correct height while pouring the concrete. After the concrete sets up, the wood form can be removed and the exposed nails can be cut off flush to the concrete. I think you put the vapor barrier in the correct place, on the bottom.

I like the fact that when you guys take on a job no matter how small or how big that job may be, you don't cut corners you do the job properly the 1st time around. Even if that job takes you hours to get everything just right you do it, I mean just look at the chicken shed that is just a great example of the work and standards that you work at. I know things are very different because of the weather conditions where you live so you need to do things along differently than say those people living in Florida. I am very impressed by the jobs you take on by yourself.

For future reference, you can put your stakes a few feet past the corners , and let your strings cross each other, make you'll just need 2 stakes for each corner, just hold them out far enough from the sides to you can get your tractor in to dig, then all you have to do is put your strings back up to check you work and square your forms up. Since you're not below the frost grade, be aware to allow for the concrete heaving and dropping, when you run your electric and water line so they don't get damaged when things go up and down.

What a fantastic addition to your chicken flock. I'm foreseeing a lot of eggs and meat for y'all, plus the dogs. The little chicks are really cute. The Quanset Hut floor is quite an ambitious project. Good thing you did you due diligence and realized you were going to need a tractor to perform all its tasks on the new homestead. 2)Since you're from Oregon, instead of saying 'pricey', I expected to hear you say 'spendy', about the cost of the 10-mil poly. I agree with putting the vapor barrier below the foam board. The poly should extend from the top of the footer all the way around, enclosing all your concrete. Any place your concrete touches soil would be a water infiltration point.

Awesome job with the slab foundation! I'd be with you, poly down first, then insulation boards, and you saw why with the condensation. It'd be a good idea to put grade stakes in the pad, to help pour the concrete to the specific height. Also, as you're pouring the footer, to prevent blow out, Ariel can be backfilling the outside, as you're pouring the inside. One force pushing in, one force pushing out, equalization. Good luck! Love ya'll ❤😊

If you are putting your poly down first You should blind the site with sand to prevent puncturing. whoops too late !

Being a smart aleck, I would recommend putting a vapor barrier above and below the foam. Of course, I wouldn't have to pay for all that poly. The previous commenter pointed out what I was thinking, that is, the gravel pit would make a terrific root cellar. I truly enjoy your videos; you are leading a wonderful life. Bless you both.

You can even weight that drag down if you need to. You know like after mud season is over. 😜 After you get finished with the gravel pit you’ll be able to put in a swimming pool!😆

Tip for your string lines, place the stakes/hurdles for the strings well away from the slab area, the strings will all intersect exactly where you need them but they won't be in your way when you excavate, and you can retie the strings when setting out the formwork or walls.

When I saw the load of pieces being hauled last winter I thought Wow big job. Now that the forms are down, it shows how BIG big is ! Please take great care, don’t get hurt. Cheers from b.c.

The Gravel. The Gravel "functions" like concrete. It is compacted. It will not move. You really don't need much of a "footer." Because the Gravel "functions" like concrete. Eric. You can think about this just "everywhere." You're form work here is amazing. Just remember. The Gravel "functions" like concrete. The footers are not so critical. Although holding the span in place is important ~ fair enough. Steel rebar is important, the perimeter insulation board is important. Super important. You guys could easily build a landing strip there. Just land Airplanes on that gravel. Just what happens with insulation. It's the Gravel. I still stand by my passageway "suggestion" below. Whew! ✨🌸✨

Adding washers, either plastic or metal, when screwing in the foam would have kept the screws from punching through. This looks great; I love watching all your videos!
