Neverending Story is like a childhood rite of passage for many of us. The trauma of watching Artax drown in the swamp, killer laser sphinxes, G'mork, and the existential terror of The Nothing 😅 Thank goodness it has a happy ending. As an adult, I really enjoy the meta-layers of Neverending Story - we are part of the journey, traveling with Atreyu, grieving with Bastion, and the Empress is eternally pleading to all of us not to lose hope and keep dreaming

100%!!! Total right of passage for kids growing up in the 80s. My husband recently started reading the book, and he said Artax can actually talk! But he said it made the swamp scene SO much worse that he started sobbing and had to put the book down. And he actually hasn’t gotten the nerve to pick it back up yet. 🥺 ❤️🐴

Fun fact: the author of the book hated the movie so much he took his name out of the credits. The book is hands down my favorite. It’s written in 2 colors (2 worlds), and the chapters start with A and go through the whole alphabet (so A to Z). Really amazing read.

Grief and/or depression.

The film is about grief. The original novel isn't. It's about the importance of the imagination and what happens if you don't use it. The movie dumbed it down to something simpler (and ignored the second half of the book).

My grandpa was a big guy, was a butcher for a long time. My grandma was a tiny woman barely even 5 feet tall. My grandpa ended up developing Parkinson's and my grandma had to put him in a nursing home because she was too small to help him move around as the disease worsened. It's sad to see the big and strong no longer have their strength.

"If we're about to die anyway, I'd rather die fighting! Come for me, G'mork! I am Atreyu!" Fun Fact: The original Auryn for this film now hangs in an enclosed glass display in Steven Spielberg's office. Luck Dragon Fact: Falkor (Alan Oppenheimer) is actually a 43-foot long motorized creature with 6,000 plastic scales and pink feather-fur. His head is three feet tall and long and has a long tongue in the mouth. You can "ride" on Falcor's back on location at the Bavaria Filmpark in Munich, Germany. Music Enthusiast Fact: The title song by Limahl initially did poorly in the US. The song only became a hit in the US following the movie's Home Video release and Cable TV airings a year after the film's theatrical release. It enjoyed another peak in popularity when it was performed by one of the characters in the third season of Stranger Things (2016). Authentic Battle Scars Fact: Noah Hathaway was hurt three times during the making of the movie. While learning to ride a horse, his horse threw him off, then stepped on him. While shooting the Swamp Of Sadness drowning sequence, his leg got caught on the elevator and he was pulled under water. He was unconscious by the time he was brought to the surface. Noah Hathaway then almost lost an eye during the fight-scene versus Gmork. One of the claws on his giant paws poked him in the face. The robot was also so heavy that he lost his breath as well when he was hit to the ground by it. They only made one shot due to the risk that he would get seriously wounded. Noah Hathaway now owns and operates a tattoo parlor in Los Angeles, California (as far as I know) with his wife and he loves talking to fans of the movie.

*_For a self-proclaimed book worm, I was going to be VERY disappointed if you would not have vibed with this movie! 😂 It is so tailor made for book lovers!_* *_This movie is infamous amongst Gen-Xers as one of those movies that scared us for life because of Arthax’s death scene in the swamp: When I saw it in a gymnasium, every child in the room was dead silent as they showed Atreyu ‘s defeated face... But then bursted out laughing at Bastien’s overly tears face! (That’s how my generation coped with trauma! 😝🤣)_* *_If you are ever inclined, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND reading the actual book on which this movie is based: The movie actually covers only HALF of the 26 chapters of the book (Each chapter stars with a word that stars with its corresponding letter of of the alphabet -So chapter 1 starts with an A, chapter 2 with a B, 3 with a C, etc.) and the ending had to be changed for the movie because of it. There is a sequel movie that is said to cover the second half but I only saw it once and did not find it memorable enough to remember_*

not sure if anyone else mentioned.. but it's also interesting how the child's name is Bastion.. ie, Bastion of hope. also, his mothers name has been said to be "Moon Child".. odd, but rather fitting. 1) You have now experienced one of core memories for every 80's child: Artax dying. For a lot of us, it was our first experience with death. 2) A lot of reactors are surprised that the empress is a child. Her name is literally The Childlike Empress. I would think that would be obvious! 😜🤣 3) I love that another bibliophile noticed the same issue I do every time I watch this movie: How the pages of the book will be bent when Bastian throws it. 😂 4) The end of this movies always gets me, but it could just be me. I and always been a book reader and writer and for 20 years I worked in childcare trying to pass on my love of books. Kids' imaginations these days seem to be gone because they spend all their time in front of a screen. We used to explore and make up stories all the time. 💗

The best fantasy movies were in the 80s (not counting LotR, those are outliers). "Beastmaster" is an incredible one that doesnt get reacted to. "Willow" also features the actress that played the scientist's wife (aka Cliff Claven's mother). I think you did "Labyrinth" already. "Legend" stars a very young Tom Cruise. Other fantasy classics include Swartzeneggar's Conan movies, as well as "Ladyhawk", "Red Sonya" & "Krull".

If you like this then Jim Henson movies will probably be right up your alley. His creators worked on the creatures in this movie.

The twist that we were a part of the storey was so fun. And that now us who watch reactors watch the. Storey is interesting. lol. Thanks again sir.

This move is all about grief and in a subtle way teaches kids how to deal with it. Also the death of artex is a core trauma of many 80kids.

Loved this as a kid. Watched it many times. Another fantasy/ adventure quest favorite as a kid was “ The Dark Crystal”. The effects are cheesy looking back, but it still captivated and horrified me at the same time 😂.

Hitchhikers Guide to the galaxy would be a fun one. Also based on a book. Super quirky and fun.

Lots of allegories. Depression, grief, and working through them. Imagination can lead to the making of a world. I got the depression thing, pretty obvious, but missed so many things. Artaxx traumatized me but I still love this movie.

Of course somebody die - it is a german kids story. It is normal that somebody die. Michael Ende wrote also a story about a magic school, which was nice, too
