I ride an FLHTK and while I don't intend to replace it yet, I am not impressed with the blacked out trim. But more importantly, the new 121 VVT motor has a drastically improved crankcase ventilation system. I see no evidence that this improvement extends to the 114 or the 117. As cylinder blow-by increases as the motor ages, the closed loop system currently in use will ultimately destroy the motor with carbon build up. HD knows how to fix this, they seemingly just refuse to engineer the necessary mods.
@BlinkingKillswitch11 ай бұрын
Ohh no. You don't get to do this to HD. It is not JUST Harley's engines that do this. Nearly ALL engines do this. Because it is illegal per EPA to vent the extra air pressure into the atmosphere. Just get a vented dipstick or catch can under throttle bottle or the Trask crank replacement. Do your research before you come in and dump on Harley like they're the only ones who do this.
@rickbush291411 ай бұрын
@@BlinkingKillswitch I am well aware that the EPA demands engineering design that prevents crankcase venting to the environment. My issue is simply that HD still sends this refuse by the shortest possible track to the throttle body. While it cause little issue with the twin cams, it causes serious problems for the M8 and given the sophisticated engineering of the 121's crankcase ventilation path, they know how they can reduce problems to their motors.
@BlinkingKillswitch11 ай бұрын
@@rickbush2914 Like I said earlier, literally every engine does this. I agree that it seems to effect the M8 more so than the TC (probably due to the larger displacement) and others but as in all things, there are M8s that go onto 100k miles and never an issue without a vent and M8s that go out under 10k. But people are so critical of HD for whatever reason when every engine does this. While there might have been something they could have done to make it better, the problem would still persist. Do I have a solution besides the venting? No. But neither does anyone else talking about it.
@rickbush291411 ай бұрын
@@BlinkingKillswitch It's fairly simple and I borrowed the idea from Solberg Manufacturing but I would like to see Harley vent crankcase pressures from another source (like maybe a large vent in the transmission case equalizer - Trask method). Those emissions could be run through an expansion chamber to cool the air and contain the oil vapors. That cooled air could now be routed back to the throttle body. Less very hot crankcase air would improve engine performance. I just have to figure out how to remove the condensed oil vapors in the expansion chamber back to the oil tank.
@BlinkingKillswitch11 ай бұрын
@@rickbush2914 I honestly think if that if it was that easy HD would just do it. Then again, we are talking about Harley here. Regardless, the main problem isn't the temperature of the air going into the throttle body. It's that there's oil in that air. I'm not aware of any way to prevent oil traveling with it, unless your proposition of cooling it prior to going back into the throttle body would significantly less the amount of it.

In 1965 my highschool auto mechanics teacher commented on how he couldn't understand why racers preferred a lot of chrome on their engines instead of painting engines flat black. He went on to explain that yes, black attracts heat and light colors like chrome reflect heat. He said if your engine temperature is hotter than the outside temperature (which it always is) you get the reverse effect and the black helps cool the engine by absorbing the outside temperature. I own a 2010 FLHTC I have blown two primary seals off the main shaft from overheating in the rear cylinder and my engine is black. Jerry, you said that you prefer the chrome engine. If these new models have the same overheating issue as my bike don't go near chrome. I proved my teacher's theory when I put my hand on my friend's 69 Bonneville, chrome oil tank and comparing it to my black Bonneville oil tank. The difference in temperature was substantial.. As Mick Jagger said Paint it Black.
