While generally a good practice, a Fluence Modern is gonna be plenty bright and chunky enough to not need the extra angling towards the bridge. It will affect the tone somewhat, but likely little more than a minor EQ adjustment in reality. Like the difference between a neck pickup on a 24 vs 22 fret guitar of the same scale length.
@suniso3706 ай бұрын
Absolutely agree about the pickup placement sound. Great example is Ibanez M8M, the pickup is really close to the bridge, and you can hear it.
@necroux136 ай бұрын
It seems like all of schecters that are multiscale use schecter pickups when they slant it with the bridge. I wonder if they didn't slant it with the Fishmans because of the overall length of the pickup possibly not being long enough to pick up all the strings very well. Just a thought.
@shreddyz6 ай бұрын
They'd have to use a larger pickup to be able to have it cover all the strings if it were slanted and there's no 9 string version of the pickup afaik so they wouldn't be able to make an 8 string version with a slanted open core modern. Maybe that was the deciding factor on the pickup placement/orientation.
@kacperkaps85916 ай бұрын
Why would you need a 9 string version pickup for a 7-string? Correct me if I'm wrong, but an 8 string version should be enough in this case.

I built an offset fanned fret flying V last year. It has a duncan JB (pickguard mounted). When I cut the passthrough for the pickup, I accidentally positioned it about 3/16" farther toward the neck than I had intended. I didn't even notice until the guitar was fully assembled. It looked a bit off from my drawing. Anyway, I was about to unsolder it and make a new pickguard, but I tested it out anyway. It sounds _really_ good where it is. It still has that percussive thump that you get from that pickup, but woolier and sweeter. It's like a whole different pickup.

What's annoying about the way the pickup is is that I saw someone selling a prototype of it on Reverb that had a Lundgren Black Heaven 7 instead of the Fishman and it was angled accordingly for the fan fret (can't verify if it's rly legit but it seems to be). So idk why they decided to go this direction with it instead of what they had with the prototype but it seems like most ppl aren't happy with the final result.

Agile did the straight bridge pickup with the orginal Pendulum (their* first fan fret) way back in the day. Basically kills the tight bridge pickup and gives you a middle pickup tone. Quite a major loss IMO

I feel like the pickup definitely isn't doing justice for more complex metalcore-y or djent-y riffs where clarity is king (for me) since it sounds a little muddy on those low strings, but I could see it working super well for some more Deftones esque stuff, which is slower and more vibe-y
@mostgoodstudios23056 ай бұрын
First of all, EXCELLENT riffage! And thank you for making a video that really addresses this with pickup placement! Far too many companies seem like they don't research it a ton on extended range guitars, and it's not discussed a whole lot in the mega-low-tuned guitar community. Some people seem to like this placement, which is cool. Absolutely subjective. But from a tonal standpoint, regardless of preference, it sounds like a middle pickup. No amount of EQ-ing is going to make it sound like a punchy, articulate bridge pickup. That, and appearance-wise, it just flows better when the pickup is slanted with the bridge. (Also subjective, sure) Still neat looking guitars otherwise. As always, this is awesome stuff!
@StefRoGer6 ай бұрын
Seems Like Drum City Guitarland has a prototype of them with a slanted Lundgren Pickup. Looks way better in my opinion, but Schecter probably wanted a Fishman and they don't build slanted ones yet afaik. Would have preferred a slanted pickup for sure.
@abunai.j6 ай бұрын
Agree. Dope looking guitar, and I'm sure it plays really well, but that pickup placement kills me. I've got an Agile that I love, but the pickup angle isn't fully aligned with the bridge - it's slanted, but not fully - and it has that honky, thicker lowmid sound you're talking about as well. It's small on that guitar, so it's workable with a bit of EQ in post. But yeah, I agree - this one wouldn't be for me either with that straight pickup.

I would have been interested in the 8 string if they would have slanted the pickup, added a neck pick up and a coil split, this is what my 7 string ormsby goalith has which is perfect and really versatile rather than a one trick pony
@dreammachine866 ай бұрын
I think it sounds pretty good but I do tend to like that spanky split coil tone. I prefer using coil split on a bridge humbucker most of the time anyways unless it can manage to be both chunky and have a lot of attack in humbucker mode. I wonder if Schecter did it this way because guitar manufacturers seem to prefer using the size up when using a Fluence Modern in a multiscale guitar i.e. for a 7 string use an 8 string pickup. But there is no 9 string Open Core Modern for the 8 string PT Black Ops so they wouldn't be able to have consistency doing it that way. I have a Cort KX507 which is multiscale but uses the 7 string Moderns and I've found the blade of the bridge pickup doesn't fully cover the high e string...so using coil split, the high e is really quiet. But this is the only disadvantage and not many players buying a modern metal/djent guitar are going to care about the high e in coil split mode on the bridge pickup so I'm sure Schecter could have gotten away with slanting the pickup even without going up a size. I wonder if they will lose some sales because of this. Someone posted a link to prototype versions of these PTs and they had slanted Lundgren Black Heaven pickups so Schecter clearly considered this. Interesting solution would be to offer both these Fluence versions, and then passive versions too with the slanted Lundgren pickup. Would make more customers happy! Oh and would be cool for a long term review of the 8 string version. These models don't interest me so much as they don't have the ultra-thin neck but I am planning on putting one of those Open Core Moderns in my KM-7 so would be interesting to hear how they sound in various situations. The Tao-8 you have hanging on the wall back there...now that's something I am planning on getting in the near future!

So many people want low end "snarl". Why? That just means your bass isn't tight enough. Listen to Meshuggah, arguably the masters of low tuned, wild riffs. The low end snarl comes from the bass, not the guitars.
