Specifically running away from the reality of being the avatar.. One of my favorite episodes is when katana and sokka get sick and aang has to wrestle with the guilt. In doing so, accidentally helping zuko out... Could have been cool to see his guilt expanded upon, but instead he just "went out for a fly" like come on!
@Conquered9 ай бұрын
This is exactly how I felt with multiple scenes in the show, like when Aang is able to fully pull himself out of the Avatar state when he discovers the destruction of the air temple. All he has to do is think back to his mentor and he can suppress his rage. In the original show, his rage consumes him and physically pushes Katara back. Katara talks to him about her own experiences with loss and talks him down enough for Aang to be approachable once more, where she takes his hand and fully takes him out of the Avatar state, showing that Aang has no full control over his true power and needs the help of friends to guide and ground him (plus the determination of Katara to get back up and try again to help him etc.). But nah, Aang is a genius monk able to do it all himself... what a joke or a script lol

That might be the thing that bugged me the most in the first episode. It felt like they stripped all the character out of Gran Gran and just had her be exposition. Yeah, she was wise and clever in the original, but she wasn’t omniscient. I could not think of anything that would justify her knowing that Aang is the Avatar.
@Ayla76508 ай бұрын
I guess it could only be explained by supposing that it is common knowledge that the next avatar had to be an Airbender and that another one was never born. So by that you could assume, that the last Airbender avatar must still be alive somewhere. So when she saw an Airbender, she thought "huh, guess he must be the avatar, since he is the only Airbender we've seen in forever". But yeah, it is still ridiculously mentalist of her. Who would put all that together in like 10 Minutes
@Ashbrash19988 ай бұрын
@@Ayla7650Possibly, but the thing is that the Airbenders were very isolated and it had been 100 years, nobody knows they look like let alone identify them. And when an Avatar is reborn, no one really knows about it except at most word of mouth, which you're not gonna get alot from the southern water tribe because it doesn't get a lot of traffic. One thing I love from the original's pilot episodes was how Sokka and Katara explained waterbending. Katara starts to say, "It's not magic, it's waterbending..." like she's about to go into an expository spiel about it, but then Sokka cuts her off and mocks her for it. But in mocking her, he ends up explaining waterbending himself. Then, just a couple of minutes later, Katara gets frustrated with Sokka, and we get this neat shot where we can see the water all around Katara follow her movements. At the height of her anger, she accidentally destroys a large iceberg with her waterbending, which presumably caused/allowed the iceberg that Aang was trapped in to surface. First, they made fun of shows that like to just throw exposition in your face, then they told us what waterbending is, then they SHOWED us what waterbending is, all the while establishing the personalities and relationship of these two characters, before seamlessly introducing Aang. It's fabulous.

I miss the sexism in the show. Adding: I'd also mention that this aspect of Sokka and considering his environment he grew up in, all played a role in his character development. 11:25 You're pretty spot on about the inconsistency with Aang's flying. In the shows and books Air Nomads lost their ability to fly after they befriended the sky bison. This is because flight is tied to a spiritual practice involving severing emotional ties that keep people's souls bound to the physical world.
@applejackx979 ай бұрын
Most Air Nomads are able to imitate flight though by bending air currents around their gliders but actually being able to fly is something you only see a character from the LoK series be able to do.

It makes sense for them to use gliders for more sharper and direct flying, and use air bending for more free and graceful gliding and hovering. I asked chat gbt to give me a summary of the first season of Avatar and this is what it said. The first season of "Avatar: The Last Airbender," also known as Book One: Water, follows the journey of 12-year-old Aang, the last surviving Airbender and the long-lost Avatar, whose destiny is to bring peace to the world by ending the Fire Nation's war against the other nations. Aang is discovered frozen in an iceberg by Katara and Sokka, siblings from the Southern Water Tribe. As they travel, Aang learns that he must master the elements of Water, Earth, Fire, and Air to defeat the Fire Nation. The season chronicles Aang's quest to master Waterbending, starting with their journey to the Northern Water Tribe. Along the way, they encounter various challenges, including run-ins with the Fire Nation, led by Prince Zuko, who is determined to capture Aang to regain his honor. The trio also encounters other characters, such as the rogue Earthbender Toph and the mysterious Blue Spirit. As they progress, Aang and his friends face complex moral dilemmas and experience personal growth. The season culminates in the Siege of the North, where Aang and his friends defend the Northern Water Tribe against a major Fire Nation attack. Aang taps into the Avatar State, merging with the ocean spirit to repel the invaders. The season ends with the Fire Nation retreating, but with hints of greater challenges to come, including the rise of a more menacing antagonist, Azula.

Man, they did Gyatso dirty in that first episode. When they see his body in the original series his skeleton is sat against a wall, looking almost meditative, while the ground around him is absolutely covered with the corpses of dead firebenders which he presumably killed before succumbing to his own injuries. In the live action he knocks a few grunts to the floor, then dies screaming at the hands of a single firebender. They did the same thing with Iroh, too (and presumably Bumi, but I missed that episode). The dude fired off a few missed shots to scare away Zhao at the Spirit Oasis in the live action, whereas in the original he managed to body 4 soldiers and forced Zhao to flee in the space of a few seconds. While here they try to stay faithful to the source material, so everything just looks like plastic, basically like in the cartoon, which gets away with it, because it's a cartoon. Like you think there has to be a way, to reinterpret the clothing of the cartoon in a way that they on one hand are still recognizable as such, but on the other hand still look realistic. I think the series feeling rushed is the main problem here. It was 8 whole episodes almost 1 hour each and yet, i felt like i didn't "see" any of the characters enough. Zuko and Iroh maybe yes but the main 3 characters just got lost on me. I just couldn't understand their essence. There was so much happenning in such a short time so I couldn't connect to the characters or feel their emotions. Or even the destruction of the war that had been going on for a 100 years... Like, come on. Avatar was one of my favorite cartoons growing up and it has too much depth and creativity to be captured in 8 episodes.
@LinneaMcNeal8 ай бұрын
this is my main gripe with it as well, constricting a story into 8 neat episodes often stunts the progression and ruins important arcs. now that we're out of the pandemic and the SAG-AFTRA strike has been resolved, scripts will likely be better quality and things won't feel as rushed (especially because atla specifically got confirmed for 2 more seasons, so they no longer have any excuse to chop up storylines)

*My biggest issues are only two:* how they portrayed Bumi, and they completely benched Avatar Roku. Avatar Roku is a critical character to the overall lore. It's one thing to have Kyoshi be the narrator of the intro, which I did like. Her voice is amazing, but to take Roku's big possession scene and give it to Kyoshi, AS WELL as give her the dialogue of what the Avatar is...I can't get behind that. Avatar Roku had personal stake in this whole venture, Kyoshi did not. It makes sense for Roku to essentially raise and train Aang as an Avatar so Aang could be better than he was. The two have an incredibly close connection in the OG. To remove that here? I can't forgive that. Then there's his whole personality shift in the remake. I don't know why CS Lee decided to go overboard on the humor. Yes Roku does have a sense of humor, but it's kind of like Dumbledore's, subdued. In the animated version, when Roku says "What took you so long?" that tells you everything you need to know about the past life, because of how it was delivered. He's kind, warm, inviting, has a playful side but would probably only show that to those he's close with. He's stern, but not overly harsh. He comforts vs berates Aang when Aang is at a low point. He doesn't yell even when he and Aang disagree. He's wise and that came from him traveling all over the world. He understood people, listened and heard them. To bench Avatar Roku now, is going to create huge writing problems for them later down the line if they do get a season 2 or 3. There's no relationship between him and Aang, and that is a HUGE misfire. Then there's what they did to Bumi, turning him into a bitter man who berates Aang for something outside of his control, just like Avatar Kyoshi, which is something she wouldn't do. People too often think she's like the Punisher of ATLA...When in reality she's more like Wonder Woman in terms of personality. What they did with Bumi and Avatar Roku _infuriates me._ And yet I can't get THAT mad at the WHOLE show cause there ARE really good elements. Such as seeing Avatar Kuruk for example, more sides to Azula and Iroh, seeing more of the Air Nomads was wonderful, and the actual Genocide itself was not just epic, but tragic. June was fantastic. The action is wonderful, the CGI incredible, the costuming is incredibly on point, it's nice to see COLOR again in fantasy. It sits at a C for me. Average.

Part of the problem I think is that there are less episodes and longer episodes. They merged multiple episodes together and also completely removed story lines. episodes usually follow natural progression with a climax of the story somewhere in the middle and then the resolution at the end. they didn’t do that well for the combined episodes, they didn’t actually combine them properly into 1 story they were just two or three separate stories in the same episode. Which makes the longer episodes useless in several cases.

Gearing the remake towards an older audience really dumbed down the character’s original personalities into serious, mature, and frankly boring shells of their former selves. It was also announced before the show’s remake that the creators were making Aang more “serious” , which takes away 90% of this character that we know and love from the original show. His goofiness and curious personality is what made the original episodes so heartwarming and funny, and the team’s shenanigans so comical and cartoony. Maybe making everyone more light-hearted would’ve brought back the 2D animation “magic”.

Tbf tho, it's likely because most people watching this series already watched the show as kids and already KNOW about the Airbender genocide, so that's why they did it sooner. There's not really much shock when the show is pretty well-known by now. I mean, maybe from Aang's perspective but not really the audience's.
@MogamiKyoko139 ай бұрын
Right?! The fact that (presumably) Gran-Gran tells Aang that the Southern Air Temple was hit first doesn't give it as much impact when he actually goes there and sees the devastation. It hits harder in the animated show because everyone tells him no one has seen airbenders in a century and Aang waves them off saying just because no one has seen them, doesn't mean they're not there. Katara actively tries to hide evidence of the Fire Nation having been to the Air Temple while they're there, so when Aang finds Monk Gyatso's skeleton surrounded by dead Fire Nation soldiers, it makes sense why he loses control and goes into the Avatar state. I understand how stupid it would be to do a one-to-one remake of the animated show with live actors, but their biggest mistake is sacrificing good storytelling/writing for some lame "coolness" factor. The audience isn't stupid; you can show things, imply things, without having to dump exposition in our faces every five minutes.

The reason Aang went into the Avatar state at the Air Temple is because he was hopeful that the Air Nomads had escaped from the Fire Nation, that just because people hadn't seen them, it didn't mean that they weren't in hiding. When he came across his dear friend Gyatso's skeleton, he realized that everything he heard was true... that all his people did in fact perish. He felt immense guilt from his decision to run away when he could've been there to help, and this combined with the grievance of his people led him into the Avatar State. He realized that he is indeed the last airbender. But the live action took all this content away. There was also no bonding between Aang with Sokka and Katara that led them onto "saving the world together" in the live action - Sokka wanted to hand Aang over to the Fire Nation even after finding out he's the Avatar... like what? Katara shared her grievance when Aang had his outburst in the cartoon- she was there for him. Both her nurturing personality along with her unwillingness to forgive her mother's murderer made her who she was. And the live action took that all away from her...

@binariko to me in that scene Iroh seemed liked he cared but he hid his emotions from the soldier. At the end of the scene you can see him change his expression when the soldiers leave him again and you can watch his expressions during the dialog. His face and eyes tell a different story than his mouth. Great acting imo
@hotarubinariko9 ай бұрын
@@karesz23 I do agree with that, but that changes his dynamic within the story. Iroh is already supposed to be on the otherside of Zuko's journey and why he's so good and helping him through it, but this implies he's still on his journey for me. Like he's realizing how much suffering as been caused by his actions, but in the show, he already knows that. He enters every interaction with everyone with kindness and eqaulity in the original. It's part of what makes him so inspiring. I do think if that is what they were going for, the acting is good. It just gutted his character a bit. All that said, I did enjoy the first season and even though it is kind of missing the point of the original, I do want to see netflix follow through on this. They felt like they were getting it in the last few episodes, so I want to see what they can do with more time.

This is what I was upset about watching this.... they removed ALL the character arcs.... everything they grew to understand in the animated version was just handed to them in the first episode.... They took away the humor and emotion that made you like dang they really are just children.... when katara got that scroll in the first episode I was like damn there goes her rebellion against being a goody tooshu which was a set up for a lot of the things she ends up doing later on including wanting Aang to kill the firelord. If your going to change stuff fine but stripping it of its soul is unacceptable....

I think the problem has to do with them thinking they can fix the OG series, which is a fundamental misunderstanding of the source material
@parthachem839 ай бұрын
U can't fix what isn't broken. Primary rule. Every adaptation thinks they can make a classic even better by their own ideologies and agendas. We know what is the result of that, besides One Piece. Katara character is again victim of woke brigade, similarly Aang and Sokka too

They cut Sokka's character arch out because he was slightly sexist at the start of the show, which he overcomes rather early on and grows to respect everyone he works with and becomes a strong leader type by the end. It's the most basic fundamental of his character and they just cut it because they thought it would be "problematic." The more they spoke about how they kept changing stuff, the more I knew this show would be a bust.

The creators being involved does not guarantee a successful show, the Percy Jackson tv show had the author Rick Riordan heavily involved and the final product in my opinion was mediocre. I've heard that the Avatar show runners left because they wanted to treat the show as a do over. An adaptation works best when it's treated as a refinement process, not a do over.

If there are 2 characters that I do feel genuinely benefitted from this show, it'd be Zuko and Iroh. There's a lot more gray to their stories. People often forget that the cartoons barely ever showed the darker side of Iroh. Lovable or not, he was still a general in the Fire Nation with innocent blood on his hands. And the Netflix show actually explored that aspect even further. I adored the flashback to Lu Ten's funeral and how Zuko showed kindness to his uncle. It was a powerful moment and shows why Iroh really wanted to accompany Zuko. The added note that Zuko's crew on the ship was the very group of soldiers he stood up for in the war meeting is another phenomenal moment.
@zerk8139 ай бұрын
I disagree 1,000 percent. Iroh and Zuko in this show are forced through their arks to fast. It takes all of the weight of their relationship and just dumps it on your head and says “this is sad right?”. In the animated series you you saw them develop and show parts of their past that you had to piece together. You new Iroh had a dark past, and when the episode Tales from Ba Sing Se arrives it unravels all of it in a relatable and gut wrenching moment. You see the facade of the witty, happy, wise old man turn into one of true regret, sadness, and remorse for his actions. This works so well because that episode is also tied to him showing love to the people he tried to conquer.

@@zerk813 Establishing character beats early on and bringing up flashbacks that already happened doesn't mean their arcs were rushed. Even if the cartoon did the same thing, it wouldn't have taken away the value of their growth or characters. That's a narrative difference. Not a character difference. Iroh had always been a heavy character whether he showed it outwards or not.

@@RK-cj4oc okay? That literally doesn’t disprove anything I said. if the creators themselves wrote that and then chose to not add it as a part of the show it clearly wasn’t very pivotal in anyones character arc.
