Just a tip for you kids out there who wanna buy this. I got my Powkiddy X55 two weeks ago and it came with JELOS version 20230831. I immediately updated via WiFi to 20230919. Shortly after, I noticed that PS1 games had audio stutters all over the place except for light 2D PS1 titles. I tried everything including switching emulators but it didn't help. I also tried flashing 0919 to the SD card from scratch but it didn't help either. Then a KZbinr (Jacek Rusin) who tests the X55 a lot helped me. After some futility, he said he's using 20230903. I tried that version and all the PS1 audio issues went away. Somewhere between firmware 0903 and 0919, something got messed up and it's killing PS1. So, if you get an X55, take note of this.

Just ordered mine, I know its a little old but I heard with the newer rocknix OS updates that it actually gained a bit of performance since launch, and playing GBA on a big screen like that looks sick!
@evshrug Жыл бұрын
Look 👀 X55 vs RK2023: I’m considering picking up an X55, even though I already own the less expensive and similar performing RK2023, and here’s why: The RK2023 is great; the 4:3 aspect screen is also unusually bright and colorful (better than a Steam Deck TBH), and the aspect ratio is perfect for the home console systems the handheld is capable of emulating. Dreamcast in 480p mode is gorgeous! The more square screen aspect makes for a more compact device with similar display size for 4:3 content: this means its pocketable size is better for trains and busses and other impulsive moments. With a smaller screen (and WiFi disabled/not included), it has lower performance requirements and battery life is estimated to last twice as long as the X55. The RK2023 is significantly cheaper than the X55 too; I saw mine on sale, where it was an impulse buy price. So, why am I considering the X55 anyway/in addition, and why am I bothering to make a comment where I think I have something to add to what @Tech Dweeb had to say? Well, let’s get the minor thing out of the way first: both handhelds use the same RK processor, though the X55 has 1 Gigglebyte more RAM. This means the X55 will at least perform as satisfactory as my RK2023 has, and maybe the RAM will help with Saturn and PSP games 🤷♂️. MORE importantly, I’m currently on my second week of a road trip, which I think will have a third week with me driving home, alone. With this perspective, I think the X55 ergonomics would be better for playing over an hour at campsites and hotels; the RK2023 doesn’t give me sore hotspots BUT it does numb my right hand. I don’t know the PSP or GBA library very well, but @TechDweeb made a good point that this portable system plays these portable-designed games well, and I would additionally highlight that these games will have larger fonts and menus intended for smaller screens. So, ironically, I would want the larger device for portable games 😂. It’s larger size would be no trouble while I’m traveling by car, and I would have the perfect bag for an airplane, and of course I don’t need to worry about pockets at home. Lastly, and perhaps the biggest selling point for me: the X55 includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. I didn’t bother spending the extra money for the RK2023 Black with Wi-Fi, because the only use for it would be Over The Air OS updates and album art, both of which I could also do from a computer. However, the X55 only costs a little more than the WiFi RK2023, and the Bluetooth is a MUCH more significant addition! With Bluetooth, I could use wireless headphones and speakers (both which could solve the issue of some standalone emulators not recognizing the RK2023’s volume buttons), but also Bluetooth really completes the “console” package to connect one or two wireless controllers while connecting the X55 to a home or hotel TV. Connecting a powered USB hub to an RK2023 and buying a SUPPORTED Bluetooth dongle is just too much jank for what I consider a portable system, so I doubt I’ll ever use the RK2023 HDMI out either. In summary? The RK2023 is a fantastic pocket-friendly budget friendly retro handheld, while the X55 succeeds as a hybrid home and travel handheld. The PowKiddy X28 tempts me too for the same reasons as the X55 + Android… but for retro gaming and the under $100 price point, the X55 is still really attractive.

Download/obtain your rom sets (sorry, I can't teach you how to do that, google can help you) and add them to the game directories created by Rocknix 3. Download/obtain your bios files (again, can't help you there) and add them to your bios directory. - Check the rocknix wiki I liked if you get stuck, all the info you need is on there It'll take a bit of work, but it'll be worth it! Dreamcast requires frameskip=1 but runs quite smooth; good experience. N64 requires disabling the Hybrid filter. PS1 runs 2x but that res realistically requires auto-frameskip; otherwise no frameskip necessary at 1x res. PSP absolutely requires auto-frameskip=1, and still stutters slightly. PSP: Need for Speed Most Wanted is very playable at 1x res, which says it all for this device. TechDweeb mentioned that most performance settings don't require diving into RetroArch; very true. So easy to setup; therer's a shallow learning curve but it can be accomplished in 15 minutes with all these tweaks if you're familiar with Emulation Station, or maybe an hour with no experience.
@wingsfromheaven8788 Жыл бұрын
BTW, I haven't tested Skies of Arcadia but I did setup hotkeys for disc management with multi-disc titles (to change discs) and it works great with PBP files in PS1 for sure.
@evshrug Жыл бұрын
My RK2023 has a mostly good Dreamcast performance at the original 480p VGA hi res mode. You can use a small frameskip; a lower resolution like 360p can improve performance too. Remember that these Dreamcast games were originally made for CRTs which usually had lower resolution than a 480p computer monitor… so they still look great at lower resolutions. The RK2023 has the same processor as the X55; the X55 has more RAM (whatever that does for emulation, IDK), but the RK2023 has a lower resolution screen (which definitely does improve emulation performance) at the same 480p resolution as the native Dreamcast could output in the VGA hires output mode. Skies of Arcadia is a great game: wonderful combo of Final Fantasy influence and Sega whimsy! I loved it at release time, treasured it. Another great RPG to look out for: Grandia II. In 2020, I tried to introduce both games to my wife; we never finished SoA, but she loved Grandia II! You can see monsters and flank or avoid them instead of random battles, so you feel a greater sense of agency, plus it seemed like I was always the right level to progress without intentionally grinding levels. Grandia II was also on just one GD-ROM, but it had more voice acting, the special spells were cool pre-rendered anime videos, and it may have been a longer game. So, put all that together, Grandia II may have aged a bit better, but both games are worth seeking out IMO!

Wow, I was so set on buying the Powkiddy x55 handheld, but after reading some of the reviews, especially on AliExpress,it has completely thrown me off the idea of buying it now 😞 This would be the first handheld I would buy and it has all the features I’m looking for. It has batter issues, software issues, random shutdowns, not being able to/struggles to play some ps games, not booting properly, etc. So, for now I’m going to hold off and if anyone can recommend anything else to me I’d be happy to check it out. 👍

Please help me! Just got it today, right away noticed settings.menu was slow, so updated JelOS and it sucked and no emulators or games showed up. Then when i tried flashing the update to my tf2 sd card the program deleted everything on it. I need to know how to start from scratch with one sd card

@TechDweeb Жыл бұрын
Hmmm. No they're working fine for me. Maybe try changing the emulation core (press select in the playstation section, then go to 'advanced system options, then set the emulator to "Libretro: PCSX Rearmed"). That's what I'm using and it works fine.
@yusufaykin5233 Жыл бұрын

I'm looking for something just like this, in the 100 to 150 pound price range. We're absolutely swamped with these devices though. Is there something very much like this, but without the mega clicky shoulder buttons? What about ps2 emulation too, or game cube? Any advice or a recommendation on a video to watch would be massively appreciated mate.

I didn't hear anything about battery life. For a $100 I doubt it would have much of a battery. added: 4000 mah battery I assume is at 3.7 volts which would be 14.8 Wh.

Yeah the battery has been really good. The only downside is that it charges VERY slow.

How will you compare this one with the RGB30 mainly for Arcade Shoot 'Em Ups? Which one you like more?
@TechDweeb Жыл бұрын
If you're here for vertical shmups (or GB/GBC/Pico8) definitely go for the RGB30. If you want more GBA or PSP or Dreamcast with widescreen hacks then go for the X55. They have the same processing power, they'll both run the same stuff. Both are amazing choices, they just have different screen shapes that work better for different stuff.

Does this play any of the Mario titled games? Where can you find the included game list? Is there an option to buy a larger SD card with more games from the manufacturer? Good video
@TechDweeb Жыл бұрын
Yes it plays the Mario games. I think 128gb is the max size you can get (but you can definitely add your own games, or swap to a bigger size sd card if you want to add a ton of games).

I have a mini plus and a switch; I'm definitely looking for something bigger to complement the mini plus, but the x55 isn't quite it. I need something that can handle ps2 emulation. Powkiddy is taking preorders on the "RGB10MAX3" (such catchy names) which looks like it has the processing power, though the 5" 845*480 (weird aspect ratio) screen is inferior to the x55

@@dumtaminn I recently got a samsung s23 ultra and a gamesir x2 pro, and it's a dream gaming setup. The phone is $25/month, and the controller was around $60. It can play *most* ps2 games upscaled at least 2x. Games like FFX look better than the remasters. And the controller comes with a free month of game pass ultimate, so I've been playing nothing but Starfield the last week, which is amazing handheld. I haven't touched my switch in months

I’ve had one of these for a while now, partly because of your review. Which LCD shader do you prefer for GBA? I’ve been using the LCD 3X on my X55 and RG351P. Thanks!

I'm thinking this might be better than the RG35XX.... Anyone agree? I only want to buy 1 handheld.
@TechDweeb Жыл бұрын
Both are great, it just comes down to the form factor (vertical and small vs big and wide), and what games you want to play (35xx only plays up to ps1, x55 plays many more systems), and how much you want to spend.

Widescreen for psp VS square for GB & Pico8. Other than that they are more or less the same. I'd personally go for the RGB30 because I like the overall device better.

Hey there. N00b question: I have a Super Console X2 Pro, and backed up the 256GB SD card. It uses Emualec and I think retroarch. Could I forgo getting an included SD card for this - instead buying a name-brand SD card on Amazon and copying over the roms I got from the other console (and the stuff I've since added - like PSone games with full audio)? Thanks for anyone who answers!

Jelos is missing vital features such as the ability to upload themes, no bezel project and it can't rotate the screen for vertical games.
