I really wanted the original expedition but around the time I was ready to buy the two models/colors I wanted were sold out. I emailed BOLDR and they told me that they were coming out with the 2nd generation soon. I was so disappointed in the design and the strap material of the second model so I bought a Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical instead and I love it.

Only problem is it lacks the water resistance these provide. The big selling points for me on this watch are the water resistance and the superluminova lume which is known to be the best without getting radiation involved. Otherwise, not that sold on the design. On the other hand, I can't find any other field watch that looks like a field watch while having as good a water resistance as this one. He also ignores the fact this watch comes with incredible magnetic resistance not found on any other field watch. Like it or not, this watch is stacked with good features. Now that it's $500 on Black Friday instead of the normal $600, I may have a reason to buy one. I have a blacked out Hamilton Field Khaki Day-Date Auto and it's currently my daily watch. Not a minute goes by that I don't enjoy having it on my wrist. That being said, I'll need a watch for those occasions I know I'll be in water or near strong magnetic fields, or I need badass lume.

Great comparison vid! The original certainly feels more like a traditional field watch while the newer version carries more of the current Boldr design aesthetics, angled lugs, bold (pardon the pun) hands, the crown pattern. I love the bezel on the original and am with you overall preferring that model.

Hmmm....I guess I'm I'm the minority here. I prefer the new, and ordered the EIGER version of Gen 2, with the White, full lime dial, about a month ago. They've contacted me to say it's shipping shortly. I prefer the squared off case, the elongated 'A' pillar hands, and find the timing bezel more useful. The strap and display back are non issues for me. To each his own. Both are fantastic, in my opinion.

Nice vid comparison! I was a huge fan of the original and it quickly became a grail for me. When Boldr told me they were coming out with a new model, I was so excited but quickly disappointed after seeing it. I got super lucky this week and found a great deal on the original and snagged it! It’s now my go to everyday watch and I just love that classic field style it portrays! It’s a shame they don’t still make them like this.

The numbers on timing bezel on the new version is bigger, also without the dots and the n,s,e,w... It's slightly less cluttered.

I would agree with others saying that the first one was much. The exhibition case back wins over the weird boot print. The bead blasted steel case wins over the PVD, the 2 colour lume wins over the single colour. Also, a simple timing bezel that's yet difficult to operate because it's internal.... why? Like the date window on the first one better also, more clear font maybe, just nicer centering? looks more refined.

Jory, great content and phenomenal work per usual. Absolutely love everything you do. Unfortunately, I missed the boat on version 1 of the blue Everest and I cannot find it anywhere. I'd pay a pretty penny for version 1, but alas I can't find it anywhere. I suppose I just have to hope one pops up somewhere for sale or when they come out with version 3 it closer resembles the superior version 1. Version 2 has too many changes that I don't care for for me to invest $600 in. "...this new one doesn't feel as much like a field watch." This was my sentiment as well. Unfortunately, Boldr changed way too much from version 1 to version 2, and for me the changes went in the wrong direction. 1. They removed the compass 2. They removed the knurling from the screw down crowns and replaced them with something that looks cheaper and less tough and rugged 3. I hate that they put a rubber strap on a field watch. Canvas strap = field and rubber strap = diver 4. The see through case back on the version 1 was really different and unique. Why remove it and replace it with a solid case back and leave the water resistance at 200m? The water resistance didn't increase so it really wasn't a necessary change. People enjoy the little show their watch gives them. 5. This is minor and more personal preference, but I liked the shape and color of the hands on version 1. I don't like how the lumed portion of the hands are now essentially cut in half. I love seeing the entire hand lumed. Why cut it in half and have half of the hand in black? On the black face sure it looks great, maybe even the white face with the black indices, but on the blue face with the white indices? Too many colors. It feels like they tried to design a hybrid between a diver and a field watch and call it a field watch. Why not just carve out a new niche and come up with a creative name for it like WetLand or something catchy? Keep all field watch designs as a field watches and all dive watch designs as a dive watches.

The original is loads better than the second-gen. When they told me they weren't restocking the Rushmore, I got really bummed and I've looked for one ever since and haven't been able to find one. This new direction looks less refined.

I'm a bit on the fence when it comes to color-matched date wheels. When it comes to watches with fat white markers, like the Helm Vanuatu, I kind of appreciate the white date wheel at the six o'clock because it sort of keeps the symmetry and flow of the markers. I suppose it really does depend on the styling of the dial and markers for me.

Personally I think this works better if you consider it a super compressor style dive watch instead of a field watch. In my point of view a field watch should be pretty thin, and the expedition is not. I have gone hiking with 14mm watch les before and I just find them to be top heavy and they flop around on the wrist. A thinner watch like my Hamilton Khaki I don’t even notice on my wrist when hiking until I want to check the time, which is what I am after

Agree with your take. The original looks like better. More complications, the compass, and the display back are far better. Also, on the description, the lugs are flat cut on the new where the original has more curved lugs. Curved is better for me...😁 Cheers V.

How do the Boldr models compare with Bertucci or the new SWC field watch? I really have my eye on the latter. By the way, cheap silicone straps with no perforations, and worn tight can easily cause rashes.

I actually greatly prefer the timing bezel to a compass as, one, I use timing bezels all the time for random things and, two, I already know how to use the hands of a watch as a sun compass, especially since I also have GMTs & 24hr movement watches where I can literally just point it at the sun and find north. Though, to be fair, I am a huge dive watch (and chronograph for the matter) fan because of the bezel and isn't fond of basic field watches because of the lack of timing complications. Even the pilot watches I have, which kind of overlap with field watches, have timing or 12hr GMT bezels.

It's interesting to read the comment section. Out of the 100 comments posted, I'd say at least 80% feel V1 was far superior and that Boldr dropped the ball here on V2. I wonder with Jory having such clout in the watch community, and a trusted opinion to Boldr, if they'll re-release V1? Or at the very least bring back everything that was right in V1 and incorporate it back in to a V3? Jory, thoughts on how we can get Boldr to re-release V1 or incorporate all V1 ideas into a V3? I have an original. It’s a great watch. The new one is nice and fits more with the Boldr aesthetic. I also prefer the original. I like the display caseback and the crowns much better. I also like the syringe hands better. To many watches has hands with squared off hands. I prefer hands that come to a fine point.

Man I still wish they made the v1 watch. Its is leaps and bounds better than the new one. Why did they chg it? It went from the watch I wanted so bad that I ended up purchasing a Seiko Prospex (with a compass complication) this month instead of the V1 cause its too hard to find.

I almost bought a Sinai until my OCD noticed the '4' removed for the date window, throwing off the numeric balance of the dial. Put the '4' on the dial and move the date window to the 3 o'clock they would have had my money.
