We're now up to Day 7 on the new Elizabeth line, as we continue to head east exploring each station in depth as we go. Canary Wharf already had a Tube station, and a DLR station now it has a third with an Elizabeth line station! Oh, and I asked my friend Keith to come along and help explore it with me ...
Mike’s excellent Oyster Central website is here where he also talks about the new OSI’s at all Elizabeth line stations: oysterfares.com

Funny quotes. "We've worn Geoff out" "I let my excitement get the better of me" "It's so beautiful. Its so pretty" "This feels quite yellow" "This feels more brighter and lighter" "Some people are against the yellow" "For some reason you can walk in-between the escalators" "The whole slide on the ground thing" "Talk me through the buttons" "Obviously we are in the ah er ah in ah er the docklands" "Boat interchange." "Do you know da way" "The Reverse ending" "Im going to use the take"

"It would be great if they could level up the other stations"... Levelling up isn't about levelling up London and it's grossly unfair share of underground lines / intercity sized trains boring in a subterranean environment.

The reason the lifts and escalators are different is because it was in Canary Wharf Contractors’ gift under its Development Agreement with Crossrail Ltd to procure its own supplier. As such, the escalators in particular are streamlined (i.e. they don’t have the standard big metal chunky bits either side of the treads and take up less space) which allowed them to install more escalators for added redundancy and increase space, which also allowed that gap between the pillar that you could walk through; hence why there are banks of three rather than two escalators down to platform level, means dwell times are reduced.

I like the yellow tinted escalators and not merely for the aesthetics, it makes them far more visible than if they were clear which gives a functional benefit especially in crowded spaces. This should be standard practice, it would definitely help those with limited vision. I wish large shopping complexes adopted this, I'd spend less time trying to figure out how to get to the other levels.

@Raymond Cai My commute used to terminate at Holborn, that station was horrible. Having to join the horde outside and wait for the slow trickle down to platform level. I think the platforms would need to be larger as well to accommodate more passengers.

You can walk between the column and the escalator to allow the area to be cleaned. This is to prevent it from becoming one of the grotty corners you see on the tube where the cleaning equipment will not fit into.

Yup I believe it was intentional that the escalators are a Canary yellow as a nod to the Canary bird from the Canary Islands, which the wharf is named after for its historic trade. Though since the Canary Islands are actually named after dogs (not the birds! Birds are named after the islands), and the station is on the Isle of Dogs, I think some canine details would've been more appropriate. That aside I think the yellow looks great, it makes the escalators stand out, though I'd prefer a DLR turquoise, turquoise has been my favorite color ever since I fell in love with it when I visited Puerto Rico in 2009 and swam in the Caribbean Sea. I also love that the station has an American barbecue restaurant at the top, now that I approve

Above all the weirdest thing about that station is that you can be in a lovely garden (the roof garden) and hear the peaceful sound of the birds and also be surrounded by some of the tallest buildings in the UK. (Also I've found that it's practically impossible to get to level -3)

8 min 50 sec: 'That's common knowledge.' when discussing the proximity of the Heron Quay DLR, West India Dock DLR and Canary Wharf DLR stations to each other. Well this is a level of London railway geekdom in excess of my expectations! I was so impressed that it was so much quicker just to walk between the two relevant stations rather than to take the DLR but then I probably wouldn't have bothered looking at the OSI map anyway.

Every time I show friends/relatives from afar around London, we start the tour arriving by tube at Canary Wharf. Without exception they all gasp when they get to the top of the escalator to street level and say that Canary Wharf is 'more like New York than London' which is exactly the reaction I was hoping for.....

I was visiting London this week, (strike week of all weeks!) and Geoff's enthusiasm was so infectious, that it was my 1st day priority to travel the Elizabeth Line with my children. We LOVED it! Paddington to Canary Wharf in no time at all & lots of fun exploring. We rode the DLR and various tube lines and the kids were "stoked". Thanks for all the videos!

The race I'd like to see is from somewhere on the central bit of the Elizabeth Line to North Greenwich. Is it quicker to interchange to the Jubilee Line at Canary Wharf, or stay on one stop more to Custom House and take the Cablecar over.
@h0pidol825
@h0pidol825 2 жыл бұрын
I imagine that the jubilee route would win that because of the walk from custom house to the cable car at Royal Victoria and the walk from North Greenwich cable car to North Greenwich jubilee line
@bogdanconstantin5911

It also depends on the time of day/year. Peak tourist chaos at the cable car is annoying. And even if it were faster, it'll still be more expensive

I've twice walked from Elizabeth Line to Jubilee Line station via the official route; it was further than I expected. When I arrived at the Jubilee Line I didn't enter the station but walked past the other main entrance at the East end and entered through the small third small entrance across a road. I Haven't been to the area since soon after the Eastern end of the Jubilee Line station opened. I thought it had a rather American feel to it, not so much the World Trade Center because I never saw that, but across the Hudson in New Jersey where the hudson-Bergen Light Rail runs through Harborside and Exchange Place Also a but like Hoboken.

Hey Geoff! Canary is maybe the top of my list? Really keen to see some footage of the roof garden. A theory about the train platform being brighter - it’s an island platform with 2 banks of lights (above the platform edge doors), as opposed to 1 bank because the other station platforms are separated. Also, what’s Keith’s channel? he’s very charismatic and good looking - as most Keith’s are ;-). Cheers! Get some rest!

Hi Geoff, I'm watching your videos from Korea and after watching your videos about the Elizabeth Line I did some research about what this line is about and also about the Cross Rail. Turns out that Korea is also building something similar to the Cross Rail in Seoul, known as the GTX. It has the same corpes and features with the Cross Rail, so thanks to your videos, I think I can get an idea of what this can do to my country's capital when it is expected to open in 2024

Shame you didn’t explore the ‘official’ interchange route to the Jubilee Line which is via the eastern Elizabeth Line exit and walk through the shopping centre past Waitrose. The reason that is the official interchange route is because it avoids the bottleneck within the shopping centre directly beneath One Canada Square where the mall narrows and is not future-proofed for increased footfall and has plagued Canary Wharf for years. The eastern end also has the big outside walking route and ramp/connections to street level which provides for outdoor access to the offices and Wood Wharf without having to navigate inside the shopping centre.

Yes, I was there too, on the 28th of may, just two weeks ago. I came from Canary Warf DLR and wanted to walk to the Canary Warf Elizabeth line station. Dit you notice when you come out onto the canal bridge, there is a big Elizabeth line roundel on a pole to the left? You walked by it when you started your challenge. This roundel confused me, because I thought I had to go to the left there, but in fact you have to go to the right for the Elizabeth line. But I found it eventually. I took it to Woolwich, to take the DLR from Woolwich Arsenal to London City Airport, because I was staying in the Travel Lodge next to the airport. Later, when I was back a home, I found out that the Elizabeth line runs right underneath the hotel I was staying in. But there is no station there... A bit strange they skipped the London City Airport.

Interesting point made by the commuter, the Elizabeth line has made the other lines look, well, decrepit. I changed at TCR, for the Northern line and experience was like going back into the dark ages. Once the EL dust has settled it will certainly be the next thing to improve on the network.

I recently used the "secret" corridor at Paddington to get onto the Bakerloo - it's like that a time warp, since the Bakerloo is a bit grimy, the trains have just celebrated their 50th birthday and the stations just feel a bit unloved. The Liz is a complete world away from that, and that says a lot. Sorry Bakerloo!
