@@daveblock1688 Depends who is buying I suppose. I would happily accept an older model in better condition or lower Ks if buying second hand. But as noted here when trading, a dealer will use the age to get a discount. The other fair point, is how long the car h as been sitting. Cars are made to move - let them stand for a time and you end up with a host of other premature failures. Seals need to remain lubricated, rotors can rust up etc. Ask any mechanic.

This is a very common issue. I worked at a financial institution and there was always a disagreement with dealers on what is a new and used car. At a certain time in the year vehicles rolled over into the used category (via the black book). To the dealer the car was new, but to the us the car was used even with zero KM on the odometer. Loans were rejected because the amount of the loan was more than the value of the "used" car and we would not finance it. There were even cases of two year old vehicles that the dealer was trying to pass off as new. Good for the customer as he found out. Even have one dealer "sell" a card and financing was not approved. Six months later the dealer sent in a loan request on the same car and marked the car as new. Even though it had not been titled, it had sat another six months on the dealers' lot and he stilled tried to pass it off as new. Lots of sneaky things dealers tried to do and hope the financial institution would not catch them. They also sent loan finance requests to several places to try and ensure at least one would approve the loan.

John nail it - when purchasing the car ask for stock to be allocated before signing the contract, - they will need to add the vin to the contact. ask for a copy of (photo) of compliance tag up front and confirm details. Any dealer who says it is to hard, walk away as you are playing car sales roulette with you.

A new car is second hand the second you buy it and you lose ten or more percent that instant before even driving it off the lot. If you truly want to save money on a new car don’t buy one build one. Find an older vehicle that suits most of your needs then spend some money at a good mechanic to have it brought back to new and even upgraded. An auto trimmer could totally renew the interior to your liking also. You then have a reputable insurance company value and insure the vehicle for replacement cost. So instead of getting a new old vehicle you will renew an old vehicle and all the local business will love you for it. This is true recycling.

Anom Amos for 99.99% of buyers this is the most useless information ever. I get what you’re saying but the reality is no one has that kind of time and or money just lying around to fiddle with a car you just bought before you can even drive the damn thing. It’s just illogical.

Superfly1503 . I bought a classic but somewhat maligned vehicle at auction for one tenth of it original sale price it happens to be in excellent running condition but even if it wasn’t what I plan to do to it would fix it anyway. Even if I didn’t do any of the work myself the total cost of all work would still come in under the original sale price and I would have a very very nice vehicle that would last another twenty years before it needed any work again and it would still be a better investment than a new vehicle. I plan on doing an engine swap and wiring upgrade the two things that let the vehicle down, this will cost if I go all out with the best of everything just under thirty thousand dollars add another five for refreshing the brakes etc and I will have a new vehicle with a drivetrain warranty for just under forty thousand. Market value will only be twelve thousand but it will look and drive like the hundred thousand dollar vehicle it originally was. And I still have my daily driver while waiting to finish the project. I’m saying if you’re going to waste money on a car try and get some enjoyment or a bit more value out of it before flushing it.

In USA - the 2019 models begin to be manufactured in 7th or 8th month of 2018 - so it would be quite normal for the first 4 of 5 months of the new model year car to be built in the previous calendar year - also in 'Murica - the 10th digit of our VIN number definitively specifies the model year of the car, the build date is not really relevant except in the case of ordering parts, if there was a running change in part fitment, midway in the model year.

I never really thought about getting an old "new" car serviced before purchase, but it certainly makes sense and getting the dealer to do it is a good way of getting more value. And what exactly would you suggest as a hefty discount? With a few things covered like a service before delivery, its still a 0 k car so it would be a good deal if you got a big enough discount that covered its age especially if you clock up the miles so parts availability does not become an issue. I think I would rather buy a car that is popular enough to not have a couple of years backlog.

When I was in the industry, the Compliance Plate was the measure of a cars age. And when that November or December plated demonstrator clicked over to January, it was a year older. No arguments. Lop 20% off the price. Thats because down the track when it came to trade in time, that determined its age. But now the waters have been muddied with thousands of cars produced months and even years before, languishing in holding yards and warehouses, the Build Date is also important. If that was more than 9 months earlier than the Compliance Plate, walk away. Lop another 10-15% off for that. Fortunately its easy to find these dates now. The build date plate used to be sneakily hidden, sometimes not even in the engine bay. Then came the Model Year designation. A MY019 (Model Year 2019) could mean a span of 18 months, but dealers still refer to it to sometime make a car appear to the uninformed to be younger that it really is. Its all so confusing and in dealer land, specially when the used car manager or wholesale manager is examining your trade in, he will probably take the oldest off all three measures to low ball your trade in offer. Thats the way it works.

Good video. Car salespeople are the same wherever you are. The way you can tell they are lying is that their lips are moving. I spent 45 years in new car dealer service departments and the salespeople would try to run their line of BS on me, in a attempt of getting something they had promised the customer for free, didn't work! I always advised my customers to look at the manufacture date on the door jamb. You are right about demanding a steep discount on a car that has been sitting for a extended period I also would demand that they replace the battery, if the car has been sitting over a year. It's no telling how many times it has gone dead from the parasitic losses while on the lot. Here in Retardistan they normally offer a discount at the end of the model year. The best car deal I ever made was on a 1989 that had been on the lot long enough to have a birthday. I knew how long it had been there going into the deal so there was no BS from the salesman about that. I told them how much I would pay for it and that was that the sales manager flopped around like a harpooned whale!

We all know, or should know, that new model years are introduced up to 6 months before the actual year via adverts. You then add the shipping and sitting time and it makes sense that a vehicle you buy could be built a year before purchase. As the value of the vehicle is based on the model year, not the build date, I see no malfeasance. I purchased my last new vehicle in a February with a build date of the previous September. No bearing.

Also one almost surefire way to actually get a recently built car is to choose colour for it, that's not as common as ground dirt. Popular boring choises are being over produced to meet the bulk of the orders coming in, so sometimes they build too much of them and you're more likely to get not so fresh sample of the car, you'd like. So don't be like everybody and get a... blue car. There are down sides to that though: Prepare to wait for you newly purchaced vehicle longer as they are not in stock and there's a risk that too daring colour has a negative impact on the resale value.

I think this may be an issue with some near new second hand cars. Build date a couple of years ago, with very low k's (10 to 20,000km) and in some cases prices are quite close to what you'd get new (with a fair discount). If they were already a year (or more) old when purchased "brand new" the market obviously sees them as even older when sold on, even with low k's. Not a fair situation if the original buyer paid something close to "brand new" street price. As John says, quite a bit can change between model months and years (features, warranty terms, etc). How can a dealer sell anything as new if older than current model and well under a year old? I have noticed some brands don't like to discount their old stock by much. Personally I've been told it's better to order and buy new rather than seek a decent discount on their current / older stock.

"New" just means it has never been sold to an end buyer. There are several 2017 model years (no doubt built in 2016) sitting on a dealer lot near me being sold as "new"(albeit with significant discounts) and it's perfectly legal. You'd be crazy to buy one of these vehicles, because not only is it four years out of date, it has been sitting and rotting in an outdoor parking lot for four years with the engine probably having been started once in that time. New vehicles do have an expiration date.

John, have you ever bought a tech product like a router or camera? It doesn't matter how long it's been sitting there, it's going to be sold as new. In some cases a serial number is almost as good as a build date because you can track it down on the manufacturer's site (or worse, the S/N includes the date). The difference is few people spend $30k+ on a router and resale isn't a huge consideration. My point remains - it's certainly not just the car industry that does this!

Regardless of the build date, doesn't the build plate show the model year? And, the VIN has to be on the contract. The VIN will show you the model year if check it online.

I always ask for the build and compliance date......my Dad got screwed on the trade in price, because his 1976 Kingswood was built in 1975. The motorcycle trade in Australia have been doing this for years. Many bikes sold as new have been sitting for years.

Cars made overseas can take a couple of months to arrive in Australia, and another few months to work themselves through the system. If its a new model you wont have to worry about there being obsolete stock, but you wont get such a good price. if you intend to keep the car a long time, an older build will save you heaps if you negotiate hard, and resale won't be an issue if you don't sell it for a few years. But really the law needs to be clearer about what constitutes a "new" car. Obviously not too many 2020 build cars around yet but a Jan 2019 build is not the same as Dec 2019 build new car.

Also, when you do get delivery of your "new" vehicle check what model year the dealer has put onto your registration papers. If they put 2020 build on the paperwork as opposed to say 2018 there are possible ramifications. Insurance companies care about these things, as would the RTA with the requirement to have cars (pink slip) inspected after so many years of age. Nobody cares when the car was first registered as opposed to its actual age. Plate clearance vehicles should be about 20% cheaper than new stock, that is your first years depreciation in value. Doesn't matter if you get the car you want for the price you want to pay, and plan on keeping it for 10 years. But definitely does matter if you only keep them for a few years.

Great advice JC. This genuinely happened to me with a UK Nissan dealer (UK) in 2010 and I learned an important lesson that day. Practically ALL people involved in selling & maintaining cars are sorely tempted to lie and cheat and will tell you whatever BS they think they can get away with. DO NOT take a single word they say on trust. 3 months ago while looking at an Audi for my wife, the salesman told me "Look guys, I'm on your side" before quoting me the full list price.....what a total w@nker. No sale.

1. Get the VIN's of the stock they're offering, go home and look the VIN's up online. Or even better depending on brand (mostly American and European brands), plug the VIN into Prixcar's vehicle tracker and you can see exactly when it landed at the docks and got trucked to their holding yard. 2. Be so STUBBORNLY particular about the colour, engine, transmission & features that the dealer has to submit a factory order for you. That way you'll know it's brand new (Sure it will take 4-5 months till delivery though lol)

It sounded to me like the person asking the question doesn't understand how model years work. I've bought over a dozen cars and only one had the same model year and DOM. X model years hit dealer lots four or five months before X calendar year starts. My XJ Cherokee was the exception because it was custom ordered in a Wrangler color not offered on off the lot models.

Simply use this stuff to your own advantage. The Minister for War picked up a luxury one built Nov 14, delivered up Aug 17, stored indoors and $18,600 cheaper. Rego, free servicing, in the deal, no extra costs like pre delivery. One final price, treated like a cash transaction, stay the you know what away from dealer financial services. My advice, go in low and maintain a good squirrel grip until eyes water, remembering that the dude wearing the tie isn’t really human, but is a vacuum sucking out your bank account.

I fell in to this trap. My wife and I are both pensioners At 67 Im still 180 cm tall So I cant fit in to a small car Also I have bad knees I need an auto But Im just to old now to repair cars. So we realy needed a new car. Though we own our own house. Our bank refuse to lend us any money The only place we found we could get a lone was Nissan finance. But they told us The most we could borrow to buy a car was $270,000.00 At 7.5 % interest. But the cheapest car nissan had that we needed. was in the $29,000.00 price range So we thought There no way we could buy a new car As we went to get up and leave Nissan told us they had a demo for $27, 000.00 So on 6 Jan 2020 bought a 2019 st Demo Nissan. It was suppose to be a 2019 demo Nissan Qashqai ST that was suppose to have only 31000 klm on it. But after we bought it We had to sign a new contract As it had 45000 klms on it. And to top it off We later found it was manufactured in Sep 2018.

Reg Mason. Used car values are always based on "build date". Redbook (and the like) are a rough guide only for vehicles in good condition as a starting point - any issues (chipped windscreen, worn tyres, incomplete service records, cosmetic damage/wear, fluid leaks, and even how dirty it is, reduces this value).
