Thanks man. Another super helpful video; your subscription option is becoming more tempting the more I see. It's great to get to see your examples and hear your wisdom and views on the subject. I'm still in the market for lights for my soon-to-be home studio, and still deciding on lights for the budget but this is helpful for me to add to the pot. Right now Elinchrom systems are my target as more affordable than Broncolour but highly capable it seems, and more consistant than Godox etc, though I've seen lots of great photos people have captured using the Godox range too.
@JohnGress3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Ted! After posting a video not recommending Godox, a general theme emerged in the comments and that was that people who needed a lot of power ran into problems and people expressed color inconsistency problems, but many people were happy with their purchase. After switching from Profoto to Elinchorm two and a half years ago, I I have been very happy. I think Profoto may have faster speed statistics overall, but I don't think it would make much of a difference unless I was shooting athletes or water droplets everyday. Given that you will have access to power at home you might want to consider the more affordable higher powered ELC500s - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZ7dooWjfa-ihLc

@@JohnGress Thanks man. If only all folks were as generous with their wisdom as you. According to Elnchrom website, a dual pair of these is about 1,500 Euros (which given I am in the UK I have to roughly equate to UK British pounds of course = £1,281) and a pair of the ELC500s are £1480. So very similar in price. But as you say, more power with the ELC500 and more suitable to home studio type work vs portable shooting all over the place. I guess with the One you pay for portability and not the power. Whereas the ELCs500 you pay for the power and not the portability. Great insight. Thanks

Great analysis. Sorry I was a little off because I forgot there was a two pack of the ONEs. I actually have a mix of ELCs and battery powered lights so I can have what I need when I need it, so maybe having two of each is an option, economically. I use my ONE in a hard reflector so I will never be under powered, but if i had it in a large softbox I would probably be annoyed from time to time.

I am the perfect customer for this. I went from full Elinchrom ELB 500 x4 to Profoto B1 500 Air and I too was surprised by the smaller spread but loved the wireless battery on the unit design but they were a bit too big and heavy for my modified Elinchrom modifiers. I also had to use the Elinchrom Quadra adaptor which is a solution but a poor one. I have a Bridal fashion shoot at Sudeley Castle in Winchcombe Cheltenham (UK) on the 28th September and I mention this as there is no electricity or means to charge on site. Thanks for the video. I picked up on your tip where your box was drooping and you used the adaptor ring. I am already using ELB 500s and now have two One heads. The mount couldn't support the Phottix Raja 105 and 120 boxes w/o drooping. Took it to Houston Camera yesterday and Angel took the lever out of the Godox box, removed the One knob, and poof, tightening worked and my 105 now stays in place. Wish they wouldn't have put such a crappy knob on a new head. If it's just aesthetics, they need to talk to working pros that don't care how a lever makes a light look.

The problem is the Godox options seem to do everything this can for cheaper and in a more compact form factor... My friend swears by Elinchrom products for some compelling reasons and I just wished Elinchrom brought in it's HS feature (instead of HSS) as it's faster than shutter sync option on this unit as it's too underpowered to have that limited power further chopped up into lots of mini-pulses

nice review. Started years ago with the Elinchrom Rangers since I'm a location shooter. Incredible lights but that old lead battery weighed as much as a car battery. Later I switched to the original Elinchrom Quadras and have used them for years. Love the light and the light weight. But have never liked having the cords. Often in situations I instead switch to speedlights for quick location portraits. I've been tempted by the B10's and similar for years. Finally just got the ONE. Haven't started playing with it yet but I look to it to replace the speed lights and I think the ONE will easily equal two or three speed lights.Also, it will allow me to use it with the Quadras for a third light and the same remote.
@JohnGress2 жыл бұрын
Great way to look at it. I am sure they will be more powerful than 2-3 speedlites and of course easier to use. I too had the ranger (and style monolights) when I started with Elinchrom and i think they must have puled that battery out of a mini cooper!

Great review as always, such a shame they couldn’t squeeze out another stop of light , in its current form I would expect many to keep hitting the full power and having to modify their modifier choice to get around its lack of power. Sweet looking light though but for now will stick with my elb400’s which have never let me down, will wait for the next iteration that hopefully will match the elb400 power but battery and head combined.

Thanks! They did tease a FIVE at the end of the ONE launch video. I know what you mean about wishing there was a little more power. @@JohnGress I know many battery powered lights, John. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoG3mXpnbsugrbs This video shows the Phottix Indras that I would definitely compare to Profoto and Bron quality. Okay, it is also hefty in price. But it's in an all metal housing, not like Elinchrom's One. And the SMDV Briht lights are fantastic, too. Smaller than the One, more than double power and a way better bulb style flash bulb. Westcott's battery powered flashes (Jinbei/Rollei branded in some regions) have one and only one trigger for all camera makers. Yeah, right, one can use the same trigger for Canon, Sony, Nikon, Fuji and so on. Just 99 bucks and with TTL capability, too! 249 bucks for a camera related trigger is just toooo pricey, John. As much as I like Elinchrom (especially the old 500 classic series, the ranger line and also the Quadras), the One shows that the company is far away from today's photographer's needs. But btw, thank you very much for your informative review, John. Love your style and your videos.

Hi Rohan, we totally understand this concern. That's why when engineering the ONE our team did two things to specifically address it. First is the battery cell itself which is an advanced cell with no memory effect that is rated for 400,000 full power flashes. Next is the ONE's internal architecture was designed to make swapping out the cell a very fast process that any of our service centers can carry our with minimal turn around time.

I can understand how a little more power could make it more appealing, but the godox products are really just disposible. I was surprised to learn on page 40 of the AD200pro manual it warns not to shoot more than 40 full power flashes without allowing the light to cool for 10 minutes, otherwise it will damage the flash head. In the AD300Pro manual it states on page 32 that after 20 consecutive high speed sync shots it may over heat and the same can be said for the AD200Pro too (p34). I have also seen the same warnings in other Godox manuals. I use to use 30 year old Profoto heads and I have some older Elinchrom heads now too. I just doubt that any of these budget heads will make it five years.

I've been waiting for Elinchrom to release wireless flash for a long time. And they finally succeeded. 131ws... I think 50ws would be better. Who needs that much power?

Most people.

@russellbaston12232 жыл бұрын
But you do already have a 50WS version, just turn the One down. It's much better to have more power that one can reduce than less power you can't increase.

What can you do with 130 watts..?

As I discussed in the video there are a lot of uses where 131 is adequate.

I just doubt that any of these budget heads will make it to five years.
