The final efforts go into the backyard fish pond rehabilitation make-over! We add in the rest of the rocks, and review if the fish habitat works, and even get into some maple syrup at the off grid log cabin. Thanks to www.vigorpool.com/collections...
In this video we work on the next step in converting a mud bottoms catfish pond into a sparkling clear mountain stream water for trout. We sink down some dead spruce trees into the depths of the pond to create a log jam which will provide shelter to the trout and shade. This will be crucial to their survival in the summer months as temperatures and water depths become a factor.
Building UNIQUE POND STRUCTURE - 10,000+ Rocks, Sunken Log Jam, Now 20 ft Deep
Complete fish pond playlist: • Building a NEW FISH PO...
We've add over 10,000 rocks over top of geotextile fabric and sink a 10 ft, 21 diameter grain bin to the bottom of the original muddy trout pond to create crystal clear trout waters. Thanks to Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops and Princess Auto for your help in making this video!
The first fish pond transformation video: • STUNNING NEW FISH POND...
Unfortunately my pond in Northern Ontario is adjacent a swamp that is filled with muck and clay soil which makes a total mess for a trout pond, but we are doing something to fix this.
The pond trout are coming belly up and dying for some unknown reason. I spend the day trying to figure out why all the pond fish are dying. I test the water temperature, make sure the fish are getting food and oxygen, and check the water clarity.
The fastest way to dig a big pond is to use the help of a qualified excavator. This excavator normally digs out house foundations and the operator has years of experience digging giant holes in the ground and removing mountains of material.
In the previous episode we had Clarke from Lyndon Trout Ponds and Fish Hatchery measure water quality of our fish pond for oxygen and water temperature. This pond was also monitored year round to see if it holds enough water and has the depth the fish need to stay cold. Rainbow trout need good to excellent water quality and plenty of oxygen. Water flow is an asset to help fish spawn. We discovered that the water in our pond is filled continuously with the help of ground water and is very cold, even in the summer. Trout will die if water gets above 25 degrees Celsius. Shade also helps keep water cool and our pond is sheltered for a good part of the day with trees.
You will need to find out what kind of soil you are working with. Is it clay, clay-loam and sandy loam are best for holding water. You will want to avoid limestone, shale, sand and gravel-they leak. Except in our case since the gravel is actually part of the ground water, which is ideal. You can ask around to find out if your pond will leak or will hold water year round. You don't want your pond to dry up in the middle of the summer.
Our plan to excavate the remainder of the pond, pushing the size out to about a half acre in size and a water depth of around 8 feet. 15 feet is more ideal, but our base is shale and therefore can not be dug any deeper.
A trout pond is very difficult to establish, but it is very possible to do correctly if you know what the fish need.

Looking good so far. Minnows, crayfish, and white suckers to clean the rocks up. The suckers probably won't breed ,but their are a native cleaner. You might be able to ask your fish and game office about getting something like Wabash Pigtoe (Fusconaria flava) a freshwater mussel to help keep algae down as well. Also forms the basis of a food chain for things like crayfish. Plants can help with habitat for minnows and other food , but I know they can take over a pond. They also help with oxygenation. Elodea canadensis is what I would probably go with. I dunno if you want to put in anything other than trout in the pond. If you do, maybe lake white fish? Sorry for overthinking about all of this. The pond looks great and I really enjoy the content.

Great series Chris I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to see it once completed. Did my first Maple sap to Maple Syrup collection and boil since I was a kid, Loved how it took me back to my childhood, brought back many wonderful childhood memories for me. But the taste of your own maple syrup is just Over the Top delicious. Although I don't comment on all your vids, I still follow your progress. Great Channel and content. Cheers

Try to find some daphnia to put in your pond, very important part of the food chain. Don’t put cattails in unless you stay on top of them, same goes for irises. They both can get out of hand quickly. Good luck, I’m enjoying your video.

Wedge the door of the syrup cooker closed with a long piece of kindling tucked under the handle down to the ground at an angle. If you don't have enough other venting, don't push it shut until it gets hot. Be fun if you had more than trout in the pond. More fish, run from the cabin roof to more aerators. With all the rocks, crayfish if you like the taste or the fish do. I don't know what the rules are up there, I couldn't catch crappie, bluegill or walleye and put them in. Maybe with a permit I could get some walleye fry from a farm. But you're out in the wilderness, different rules.

Water plants will help to clean the water and keep it clear... I would buy hundreds of water snails, they will help to keep it clean, plus they will be food for the fish.. If you plan to catch fish to put in your pond, do put them in for 24 to 36 hours, this will help keep invasion plants out, same with Crayfish...

The only problem I'm seeing so far on the pond is the corrugated metal being in there- that's stuff has gotta come out. I wouldn't even put pond liner over it- will tear eventually and you'll be leaching metal into the pond. Do you plan on draining the pond every year or so for cleaning?

There ks a spring fed trout pond near my house. The thing isn't any deeper then 4 feet at most. And it's had trout in it my entire life. It's 10yards by 10yards. Even in the summer the water is freezing cold. Pretty sure that's gona be prime for trout. There is sediment at the bottom of the pond also. But it's too damn cold to swim. Even in late summer. This is Pennsylvania
