Reverend John Davenport and his childhood friend, businessman
Theophilus Eaton, lead a wave of the wealthiest and strictest Puritans out of England, unknowingly toward the tail end of the Puritan Exodus. Arriving in Massachusetts they find the colony divided and the "City on a Hill" already tainted with heresy. Davenport and Eaton decide to form their own colony of New Haven out beyond the domain of Massachusetts, Plymouth or Rhode Island.

My grandfather on my mother's side move to Burbank, California from New Haven, Connecticut in 1949. His ancestors came to MA in 1635, founded Salisbury, MA, and later on moved to New Haven, CT. I grew up on near the beach in Ventura, California.

This is so interesting. Nearly all of my mom’s ancestors were Puritans from Massachussets and Connecticut. You are telling me all about their lives, and solving some mysteries!

It's the Rich Scumbags who wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution who are still Screwing America today even as they lay in their graves. "There's a SUCKER born every minute." - Constitutional scholar, PT Barnum. 😮

New Haven Colony.. Great maybe I’ll hear about my ancestorit John Wakemen and how he settled Derby. Nope -apparently he accused a man of sleeping with a pig. I lived outside of New Haven all of my life. Recently moved to Winthrop Maine. Kind of ironic I landed in Winthrop. Really enjoyed your video. Can’t wait to listen to more.

At Least he wasn't the man accused of relations with the pig.

A minor historical quibble: at about 7:30 you mention Davenport et al can't find a good harbor to settle (after the Mass general court approves their settling wherever they want), because, you tell us, or they assert-- all the good harbors are already taken. Claims staked, as it were. Then at 7:45 you show a map of greater Boston that illustrates (notionally) how the existing Puritans have already built ~10 towns around Boston. Problem is, the map is from at least after ~1713 if Lexington is on there. As is Cambridge too, but in 1636/7 Cambridge would still have been labelled New Towne (and Harvard still the 'Newe Colleg') for example. The combined effect gives the impression the new arrivals are telling the truth about not being able to find a good harbor in Mass. They're probably not. Which would matter. I mention this because the real answer is probably political agency or some might say selfishness. Good business acumen? But not the lack of viable harbors. There were still many available between Cape Ann and Cape Cod with fewer (if any) pioneering homes built than they had new families in their portable congregation. They were also wealthy and had carte blanche. So it was a choice to go south. How are the primary sources for this deliberation, and scouting period? Did they consider north instead? The logical place would seem to have been Casco Bay in what's now Maine but was not yet logistically incorporated into Mass until a generation later (1658). The reason this would have made sense is the strategic threat from New France (Acadia and Quebec) was more existentially severe but also more physically remote. Compared to things already getting crowded in whats now Rhode Island and Connecticut with the Dutch and other constraints south. Curious also for your thoughts on how Davenport group and Hooker group (or Saybrookers) felt about the nearby Dutch. On the one hand they're rivals for real estate and trading profit... on the other hand they're de facto religious allies and had recently been staunch military allies too vs Spain/Habsburgs. Thoughts? Love your videos and audible enthusiasm! Edit: correcting Saybrook vs New Haven
