Great sermon; thanks for posting it. While I do not expect an answer here, if all of these verse are not about the Second Coming but rather the transition between the Old and New Heavens/Earth, in some sense, then basically, all that we have left is the simple fact of the Lord's return. Is it not possible, that these verses are pointing to 70AD which in turn, may well be a picture of what will happen at the very end of time?
@Owngeeeeee3 жыл бұрын
Certainly, I think most post millennialist (or at least Kenneth gentry) would say that the Judgement coming in 70AD is typological of the Bodily Second coming of Christ.

1200 word summary of this sermon: The ancients understood the “Elements” in 2 Peter 3 (στοιχεῖον/stoicheion) as 👉🏽deities underlying the building blocks of reality👈🏽 which in their view was Earth, Air, Wind and Fire. Peter had this same idea in mind, as demonstrated by the Bible mentioning a Prince/Angel of the Air, and another one for Fire. That is, when Peter is talking about “Elements” there, he means something like 👉🏽Elementary Gods👈🏽 or ‘Celestial’ Powers (as in heavenly/spirit-worldly, not like planets/space). And when Peter is talking about a New Earth, he is talking about a New Celestial Order (on account of there being new, or ‘overhauled’, Elementary Gods). And when Peter is talking about the dissolution of all things in fervent heat, he is saying the resurrection of Jesus is the toppling of these Elementary Gods (the old ‘heavens’), and their World Order (the old ‘earth’). [Doug says, “..this fervent heat.. will **melt down the old structure**..”] In short, we are to read the dissolution of the elements with fervent heat as the dissolution and subsequent 👉🏽overhauling👈🏽 of the Elementary Gods and their Celestial World Order as it stood in (what we think of as) the first century AD. One reason [~24:00] we are not to look for a 👉🏽material fulfillment👈🏽 of the New Heavens/Earth - i.e., that we're not to look for our planet and solar system (and so on) and all their atoms to be blipped out of existence, and then for God to make a 👉🏽materially👈🏽 new planet and solar system out of all new atoms (etc) - is because that isn’t what’s promised in scripture. What God promised was new Elementary Gods and a Celestial World Order, as demonstrated by (for example) the scripture that Peter is referencing, namely Isaiah 66, where it’s talking about God building a new Temple. While the old Temple [~25:00] was 👉🏽material👈🏽 - you could walk up and touch it, [“You can still go to the old Jerusalem today!” lol, Durbin and Gore also use this line.] you could worship God 👉🏽materially👈🏽 there. But we know from Rev [~27:30] that the Bride is New Jerusalem, and we know from Eph 5 (and elsewhere) that the Church is the Bride, therefore we can conclude the Church is both the New Temple and the New Jerusalem, and therefore it is not made of 👉🏽atoms👈🏽 like the old temple, it is not material, because the new Temple/NJ/Church is made of living stones (“breathing bricks”), i.e., believers. Since the establishment of the Church/Temple/NJ happened in the 1st century, then that must be when the New Heavens and the New Earth arrived (i.e., when the Elementary Gods were dissolved, and then overhauled, and the new Celestial Order began) - that’s when NJ came down out of heaven (so to speak). In Romans 10 [~19:00], Paul is referencing a theme from Isaiah 65, where God is saying is the old way of doing things is going to be ‘largely’ forgotten, because they will be hidden from God’s eyes, “for behold, I create new heavens and a new earth.” This is the promise that [~22:30] Paul and Peter are referring to - the transition from a church connected to a particular ethnic group, to the gospel going out to the whole world. And since Peter is writing at this transition point [~13:00], he's clearly not talking about something that's thousands or quite possibly trillions of years away. Similarly, considering the promise Peter is referring to is fulfilled during the transition from Old Covenant Israel to the Gospel, and considering we are (of course) still on the same planet (in the same solar system, in the same universe) as Peter, Paul, and Isaiah, we can safely conclude they were not referring to the end of our physical, atom-based planet (and sun, solar system, infinite godless nasa space, etc) and the creation (and entering into) of a new physical, atom-based planet (in a new solar system, etc), because if that’s what they were talking about: where is it? That is, because scripture is clear that the New Heavens/Earth - whatever they are - arrived in (what we think of as) the first century AD, we would of course be aware of the existence of a literally new planet (and solar system, etc) - it is not something we could possibly be missing or be deceived about (not even by a loosed satan!). Further, it’s just as plainly clear [~23:30] that the New Heavens/Earth are not referring to the eternal state, or what most people call ‘heaven’. That is, we currently live “on” New Earth today, in the sense that we currently live under the “New Celestial World Order of ‘Overhauled’ Elementary Gods” (i.e., the New Heavens/Earth) that arrived with JC. When Jesus said Living Water would flow out of a believer’s heart/belly, and added “as the scripture has said,” He was tying this all together for us: Regarding the Living waters, we’re told, “this He spoke concerning the Spirit” i.e., the Living Water is the Holy Spirit [~30:00], and considering Ezekiel 47 is the only place in the OT that talks about rivers of living water [~32:00], we can conclude JC was referring to that passage when He said “as the scripture has said.” Which is to say that what Ezekiel was describing [~34:00] was that out from under the threshold of the Church (i.e., Ezekiel’s Temple, i.e., New Jerusalem), the Holy Spirit (Living Waters, salvation, everlasting life) would flow (starting with JC’s resurrection in the 1st century). And then also, when Rev 22 [~36:00] talks about “a pure river of water of life..” (almost the same phrase) “..and on either side.. was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits.. for the healing of the nations,” it is talking about the same thing that Ezekiel is describing (i.e., same fruitful trees for healing on either side of a river), which is to say that [~37:00] the last two chapters of Revelation are describing the same thing as Ezekiel, which is the same thing Jesus was referencing with the waters from the belly (namely, the impact the Church will have on the world), which is the same thing Peter is referencing. (That last point makes for an additional reason to conclude the New Heavens/Earth arrived in the first century: considering the water of life in Rev 22 is synonymous with salvation, the Holy Spirit, and the fruit of the Gospel, obviously that water of life is not going to wait until the planet and all the atoms in the universe are dissolved before it starts flowing - it has been flowing since JC.) To summarize: • Ezekiel’s Temple is the Church; • That Church/Temple is also Rev’s New Jerusalem; • The Church/Temple/NJ is also Isaiah/Peter’s New Heavens+Earth; • The Church/Temple/NJ/NH+E are in reality the Dissolved/Overhauled Elementary Gods and a corresponding new Celestial World Order; In conclusion [~40:00], God’s desire from the beginning was to bring salvation to the entire planet, to have all the families on the planet come and worship before him, and to have this immaterial river of salvation flow from the (material?) Church, out of the (material?) heart/belly of every believer, and (immaterially?) flood the world with it.

@M G Here is an example in Isaiah. I am also new to this, but since studying it I have fully changed my tune on eschatology. I can happily say I am postmillenial thanks to people like Doug Wilson, Jeff Durbin, and James White. “The Gentiles shall come to your light, And kings to the brightness of your rising. “Lift up your eyes all around, and see: They all gather together, they come to you; Your sons shall come from afar, And your daughters shall be nursed at your side. Then you shall see and become radiant, And your heart shall swell with joy; Because the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you, The wealth of the Gentiles shall come to you.” Isaiah 60:3-5 NKJV

@M G i feel the exact same way. I was dispensational for my entire life until about 2 months ago. It probably took me 2 years to finally change. A good friend of mine became a partial preterist and over the past 7 months we really dug into it. It took a lot of humbling for me to admit I was wrong. I’m still learning to explain my position to my family and friends in a loving way without getting frustrated so pray for me. Luckily I’m only 22 and have my entire life to learn how to articulate everything properly and in love. The church I currently go and serve at is about to go through the book of Revelation and it’s a dispensational premil church so I really don’t know what I’m supposed to do about that. It’s going to take months to get through it and it will be hard for me to sit through something that I’m now convinced is an improper view. I do know that I can’t subvert the authority of the church and convince others of the flaws. That would cause a lot of problems.

I might have spaced out while listening, but does Doug ever make mention of Isaiah 65:20, namely, "no more shall there be in it an infant who lives but a few days". This doesn't sound like something typological but rather seems to be speaking of a time of prosperous health, same with "for the young man shall die a hundred years old". Living to 100 happens, sure, but arguably it's not very common. If anything, lives seem to be less healthier and shorter currently, even with advances in health and medicine.

Brothers, the Lord showed me 2 months ago, an extraordinary vision, regarding the DAY OF THE LORD. I saw myself outside, among the people, and suddenly, an immense light, which encompassed everything, coming from above, of an unimaginable force and power, hit us unexpectedly. At that moment, I didn't have time for anything, I just managed to shout: OH MY GOD! I woke up instantly, and I heard a voice in my head (I knew it was the Lord), which told me: GOAL! And then I told him, remembering that in the BIBLE, it is written that the Lord's Day is a day of great auspiciousness, as it has never been before and will never be again, and I asked Him if this is what we must do, when we see this light. The LORD answered me that that LIGHT is HIM and that our GOAL from that moment, for salvation, is to CRY FOR HIM!! What I can tell you, after this experience, is that the ONLY thing we need is FAITH in the LORD. Believe me, nothing will save us on that day, except HIM! Glory to our Lord! AMEN!!!!!

Some interesting facts of the Temple and how the temple is described by the contemporary people like Josephus. The way is the outer court. The truth is the inner court. The life is the Holy of Holies. Jesus was saying he was the new temple. Hence no one comes to the father except through him. The outer court is called the sea. The inner court is called the earth. The holy of Holies is the called the heaven. That’s why in the book of revelation it says there is no sea. When Jesus spoke about heaven and earth, he actually mentioned it twice. First in Matthew 5. He also said it here. Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. Look at the preamble of the chapter. Matthew 24:1-2 Jesus left the TEMPLE and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” That’s how “heaven and earth” will pass away. This will happen to the temple. “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” That happen in AD70. It was also the God moved his addressed into temples build not by human hands. We are this new temple. We are this new “heaven and earth”.

Both occurrences are expressed as something to be avoided, not to be embraced as a believer in Christ. Promoting Christianity over a [believer in] Christ is “transfer christian theology” to place [you in] Christ under a defiled religion. James 1:27.
