Perfect timing! I was just thinking about rewatching your t-shirt week. When I found your channel last year I was so new to garment sewing that I hadn’t ventured into knits when that series came out. Since then I’ve managed to get several knit tops made (and a dress!). I was rewatching your video on the petite bodice adjustments yesterday. I’ve found that to be so helpful! I’m going to make another Pattern Scout Fern top this time with the square neckline expansion. This pattern from ITS looks wonderful and I have some fabric that will be perfect. I still find neckbands a bit of a challenge so I’m off to watch your tips from t-shirt week! Thank you for your excellent content. The red top looks beautiful on you.

I love this neckline as well. I just used you link to buy it. I also love that it has narrow shoulder adjustment instructions as my bra straps always show on my tops, and I have no idea how to fix that on a raglan sleeve top. Your red top is so flattering on you! Thanks for the details.

Very cute! I've stayed away from a square neckline because I'm concerned it'll droop or stretch out of shape, but I bet the drafting on this shirt pattern is excellent and with a knit with good recovery, it wouldn't be an issue.

This pattern calls for 50% horizontal and vertical stretch. However, all the modal cotton fabric I have seen online falls short of this requirement. Did your top, which looks great, have a smaller stretch. This also applies to all of the wool jerseys I have seen online. Your guidance in regards to the stretch would be great. Thanks.

To be honest, I didn’t even check the stretch on this knit. This was a leftover piece from a knit romper I made last year so I knew the stretch would work for a t-shirt. In my experience, the width stretch is more important than the vertical unless you are making pants/leggings or swimsuits. StyleMaker fabrics has my favorite cotton/modal/spandex knit. It comes in quite a few colors and works fabulously for t-shirts! stylemakerfabrics.com/products/cotton-modal-jersey-knit-solid-white

Hi Whitney! I'm wondering what cropped jeans or capris pattern you have on with this top in the photos of you wearing it? I can't tell if they are white, cream or possibly light blue. They look like you have a fringe detail at the bottom. TIA!

Those are the Ginger Jeans (mid rise view) and instead of hemming them, I just sewed a line of stitching about 5/8” from where I wanted the hem to end and let it fray! They are an off-white stretch denim!

I did and I just used a straight stitch with my regular machine. Because the neckline is wide enough, it doesn’t have to stretch to go over my head!

I love the look of this top -- especially this beautiful neckline. However, it seems that every make that I see of this top seems to be too tight in the underarm area. Is that true, do you think? And how could that be corrected? I am purchasing on your link, but would like to be able to resolve that issue when I sew it. Thanks so much for the video!

You might have better luck with this one. It’s a raglan sleeve so the underarm is part of the sleeve. If it’s too tight, some added seam allowance to the side seams of the sleeves (and front and back) would help!

Tha look great on you Whitney! I want to sew more knits, but love a longer sleeve . I like to cover my arms , I shy away from shorter sleeves. However you mentioned the sleeve can be lengthened. Is that difficult?

Thank you! Lengthening a sleeve isn’t too bad. If you just mark the center of the sleeve (the shoulder notch) and draw a line perpendicular to the grain line to your desired finished length, then mark your hem at that point (usually your wrist measurement plus some ease for your hand to go through) and add that evenly on both sides of your center line. Then it’s just a matter of drawing the existing side seams to the new hem and you’re good to go!
