Ms. Alexander’s humility is out the roof! She is wise and humbled by her own ignorance: She easily admits her short comings only to help expose many of us who live in altered states of consciousness. The definition of truth and openness is what she embodies... The world would be a better place if we all would just be a little more honest with ourselves.

The point is...even if you actually did do the crime, doing the time is never enough. You pay back your debt to society? The Federal Govt denies you the right to be a citizen, even the right to survive, once you leave prison. It's inhumane and ungodly policy.

I agree with everything she says. The fact that the label of "convicted felon" is on people till the day they die is another reason why the prison population has skyrocketed. What do you all expect if people are legally discriminated against from a job because of having a conviction on their record, what other choices does that person have?

My son and I are experiencing this right now in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. Neither one of us had criminal records and done no crime, victims of a malicious prosecutor, and a corrupt court. I was convicted because I reported the D A for false arrest, when I was falsely arrested and jailed after stopping pay on an overpaid paid check to a bad unlicensed contractor (Ms) in the aftermath of Katrina. There was no prior investigation. I was maliciously convicted, and so was my 17 yr. old son.

More than mature... uh, let me refresh your memory. This started with a question from me when I thought there was a reasonably good chance you were kidding when you said that prejudice and discrimination are not racist if it's against white. You immediately came back with, "I'm definitely not about to educate you on shit! " I didn't have to add the exclamation point. I was so thrilled you condescendingly thought I needed to be "educated."

Let me see if I can explain this in a way you could understand (probably). Simply saying various, "articles, books, etc," doesn't point anyone anywhere. Moreover, I find it incredulous how often people get so immaturely vitriolic just because someone disagrees with them. If you wanted to prove your point, a reasonably good start might have been just having an intellectually honest discussion.

Jay Z had a line in a song, "I do this for my culture To let 'em know what a n***a look like...when a n***a in a roaster Show 'em how to move in a room full 'o vultures"....every time I she her, that line comes to my mind...She sexy, she smart, she's patient with her argument and she's focused enough ,capable enough to cast a wide net when people try and take the argument in ways that make us look bad and she pulls them back on course with ease and grace. Beautiful to watch her work flow....
@dannybrazen

thats possibly one of the most patronising sentences i've ever read! especially that the FIRST thing you commented on was how sexy she is. yeah, im sure she's pursuing her career to appear sexy, not the fact that she's an accomplished lawyer or anything. ignorance breeds ignorance. i'm a white male and what you wrote above is beyond laughable ...more uncomfortable. maybe it wasn't intentional, but perhaps think what you write next time?
@calmnrelaxed
@calmnrelaxed 9 жыл бұрын
Well you youtube troller critic white guy... FIRST, i find it laughable that you feel the need to let me know that you are white (as if that some how qualifies you to dispense what's right)...your arrogance and self righteousness offends me...so let me now educate you on something (that should have been apparent, but it must not be to you)...she is sexy and smart (the type, if she were single and if i were too, that if i could meet i would try to get to know. Now, whether she was a lawyer or a bus driver or a teacher or an EX-FELON; it would not deter me...kind of what her over arching point is..that some people are seen as a second class citizen and there relegated to walks of life )...see mr. White guy, her social status had nothing to do with my statement...She's just a sexy...pretty, attractive, nice looking, (etc) woman..and, she highly intelligent well able to deal with fools like you and if i somehow offended her (by my statement of attraction toward her, well able to let me know, with out being arrogant and/or self righteous...lesson over...oh, one last thing, maybe you follow me and i'll help you broaden your views, so your not so self righteous
@dannybrazen
@dannybrazen 9 жыл бұрын
haha, yeah keep justifying your impossibly ridiculous statement. im sure if "she was a lawyer or a bus driver or a teacher or an EX-FELON", you'd still be all over her like a bad rash. my point was, she's not trying to impress people like you, yet your comments above have clearly let us all know that she has raised herself (y'know, by being so sexy as she is and all) to the levels of being able to maybe one day win you over ...if you were feeling so inclined ...on that particular day ...perhaps. and i only made the remark about being a white male to highlight the fact that i'm neither black, nor a woman, yet your comments still oozed poor judgement even to someone that has never walked one step in her shoes.
@calmnrelaxed
@calmnrelaxed 9 жыл бұрын
You sound like the people she's talking about..and furthermore, i have no need to justify any thing to you ...I was simply trying to educate the ignorant (and the Over Privileged) .... but be that as it may, my real issue with you and people like you, is I find it difficult for white people (you are white, cause you felt the need to tell me so, even though there was no frame of reference in the conversation to do so...you just felt it was necessary to interject your "WHITENESS" into the conversation. Like it was a "Black Card, or like it was some kind of "end of conversation" , "the White man has spoken" "My White point of view of things is all that's relevant" kind of way...So you felt justified in telling me how to behave right, without thinking, you are the kind of person she's talking about...irony, huh Mr. WhiteGuy...but the truth is, you have no monopoly on what's right and you'd be better off addressing the issues in your own life than to step out and try to sweep around my porch. Hey, but once you have your mess together, then come holla at me about mine..but until then, sit back, be quiet and learn how grown people interact with one another...(lesson 1) If we (grown people) find other (grown people) attractive, sometimes we express that..since you seem to be deficient in that area... Here's a homework assignment for you...1st, look at her, is attractive to you? if so, find a way to say it in a non-Whiteness kind of way (50 word or less)...In your response, I expect for you to address the following: Do you see her? I mean as a person (not in a "Color or Gender blindness way, I mean as a woman)...Then answer, "Is she attractive to you or not?" ...Until you can address that, go troll someplace else, or the next time we talk, I won't be so nice, I'll have to treat you like the disobedient little over privilege white guy that you are...
@dannybrazen
@dannybrazen 9 жыл бұрын
umm, did you even read my last sentence? seems like you didn't. i'll start over for you. i mentioned im a white male to emphasize the fact that despite the having neither of these traits in common with the woman speaking, you still come off like a slobbering moron who talks about how sexy she is EVEN BEFORE, i dunno, applauding her cause, her reasoning, her fortitude, or perhaps the sheer fucking balls it takes to do what she does? and the fact you justified it by saying you didnt even care if she was an ex-felon, as if thats some kind of code of valour?! thats like saying "yeah maybe, that olympic athlete didn't win the gold, but damn she looks hot in those little shorts, she's good enough for me".

(2of2)Discrimination is pro-active, and racist when it's directed at someone's skin color, which is what you were suggesting. Prejudice is still racism regardless of whether it is pro-actively oppressive. And btw, how is discrimination based on skin color (what you suggested) not "oppressive?" Also, exactly what discrimination against whites were YOU referring to? That was how this discussion started, when you said that prejudice and discrimination against whites isn't racism.

I believe her because this has happened to me personally. Have you ever considered what your life might be like if you were ever unfairly targeted whether by an former friend, enemy or the law in general and you couldn't afford an atty, so you get a public defender, who's main job is a conviction for the courts?

I was 12 or 13 when crack hit the sf bay.. im from sf. Lived in the western addition (fillmoe) All of a sudden all the kids were talking about "hubbas".. "hubbas for your trubbas" The hood was 1 big spot. It was blatant. Out in the open. No shame, no sense of keeping it on the under. Smokers out in the open. Sales out in the open. Lots of my black friends were getting caught/locked up. Because they were selling crack. Only the really discreet kept from that fate. Wonder if that's a factor? I saw it. I didn't imagine it. It wasn't through "racist tinted glasses" Wish she talked about that side, too.

To deny any issue concerning race is the worst type of racism one can imagine. Not only is no one listening, but they instinctively yet unintentionally dismiss your claims on the shallow grounds of a presidency deemed by most to be failing. (though I must emphasise people have come to dislike Obama for their OWN POLITICAL BIASES. I personally would put it on surveillance, dubious secretive trade agreements and the crackdown on dissent amongst whistle-blowers.)

I was reading there that in one state prison officers were lobbying the state not to decriminalise Marijuana usage, because there is more money in it for them if more people are in jail for smoking weed. It is shocking that a question of a person's freedom should be decided based on a simple profit motive. When they use the word slavery they aren't kidding.

Although prisoners provide free labor, I believe the financial rewards of mass incarceration are mostly the per diem rates paid to states and individual facilities by the federal government and that states pay to their secure facilities. Our tax dollars are paying for the re-invention of racial caste, the systemic destruction of African American men and boys through the U. S. Criminal Justice System. Michelle Alexander is so articulate and on point on all the issues affecting African Americans who have been victimized by U. S. Criminal Justice systems. Thank you so very much Michelle. Your work has and continues to further the cause of racial justice. Thank you.

come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land. Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses. But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel (Israelites). Exodus 1:10‭-‬12 KJV What's new is old. Racism doesn't have to something pro-active, it CAN be. Prejudice isn't innately pro-active, no one would seriously contend that it isn't innately racism just because there may be no active "oppression" involved.

The first part of your argument is addressed in the video. Still, selecting a few successful people doesn't mean there isn't a new Jim Crow. As Professor Alexander pointed out, there have always been successful Blacks, even during slavery. Does that in any way JUSTIFY, or rationalize, injustice, rank discrimination, and blatant inequality - somehow make it right - simply because we can point to a few people, comparatively, and say those few have achieved success? You've got to be kidding!

Obviously you have a limited understand of what the word "Sexism" means...you should Google it, or go look it up in a dictionary...Trying to equate me calling her sexy with sexism requires that you ignore what the word means...I mean, I could call you black, or a female, but how we define those terms would testify against me...I could be stubborn and continue to fight, but eventually, I'd be fighting alone...Some what like where this is headed...You can continue to tilt at windmills if you so choice too...or you can leave your imaginary land where being a "white male" means you get to define what's right (to include black culture and black expression)...

unbelievable. yeah keep trying to justify your ridiculous original comments. just imagine for example you were that woman's dad, or mother, or any other loved one for that matter, and she had just poured her heart out on stage in a heartfelt speech on equality, and you heard some moron declare "she sexy" ...at all, but especially even before mentioning ANY other factor of the speech. if that person were in the room when you said that, you'd be knocked on your ass! its bullshit arguments like yours that piss me off. i'm no racist i promise you that, but if we ALL genuinely want equality, you have to stow that shit. just imagine if you were at work and a female colleague made a speech, and you topped it off with "she sexy", you'd be in an industrial tribunal faster than you could dare to apologise! yeah, but as you say, i don't know what sexism is. seems like you do

Sorry, I guess I needed a part 3. I just want to make sure I understand your position on this... your suggesting that ill feelings towards someone based on there skin color, such as PREJUDICE, isn't racism unless it's pro-actively oppressive???

Most aren't locked up for mayhem or murder but for non violent drug crimes. What is thug life to you and why is it good to lock them up and not bikers or militia men or slackers or any other life style that free people choose as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else?

@jaybee60s....we start with our so called black political leaders that continue to sit by allowing this to happen, selling us out to line their pockets also. We start with our churches, there are more in our community than any other community & ensure that the so called mission society in our church have training programs: HVAC, LPN, Eletrician, etc...these training programs can & should take place in our churches. We need to be proactive & not reactive.

1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. 2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination. 3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races. I don't think you understand what racism means, hopefully this clears it up. Also, you are ignorant.

No, I stand corrected, you said prejudice and discrimination were not racism IF it's against whites. Not only is that laughable, it's a double standard. It's the kind of thing someone believes because it's what they WANT to believe. It's just a rationalization for your own... racism.

so in short, only "Asians" and "Northern Europeans" share common ancestors. and a common link with pre human anthropoids namely the very successful Cro Magnon man and Neanderthals. As for "blacks being beautiful" i'll just leave you to be the judge of that with this statistic: at least 70% of black women are single and are the most celibate group in Europe and America. 4 times as celibate as white women (depsite them being more "church going" and having more pregnancies) (lol oprah said it")

Regarding the tail end of sentencing, I think you are doing a disservice by only believing this is a race related problem. This impacts all of us. There is no reason to keep punishing people after they serve the sentence and clear parole. No matter the crime, no one should do extra time. People should be able to vote, get student loans, obtain firearms, etc. everything, should completely go to “normal.” The whole system is BS. I understand it might more greatly impact non-whites only due to sheer numbers, however, if we adopted the perspective the impact is on every one of us, this would get the required traction. I agree with you the system more heavily targets non-whites to front load. In thinking this through, this is most likely caused by the cycle we created. Connect with me through Sajad H if you want to speak further.
