Actually there is a digital back that shots only monochrome, it is the Phaseone IQ260 Achromatic. 645 medium format digital back with 60MP, very amazing with its performance.

good vid with very good informations this would be my desert island camera, too, because I´m the typical BW enthusiast from the 1970´s - I´ve started with a Nikon FM, BW film only and a photographic laboratory in my cellar, a wonderful time - so, Leica has made this baby especially für me :-) - but, like most people, I can`t afford it - but we all need something to dream of :-)

I want to see one of these cameras used in the field by reporters, journalists... folks that would tell a story with this camera and not safe little photos around the house by rich yuppies. Put it to the test and have some real data to brag about. The king has no clothes.

Since this is a true monochrome (output) camera with a panchromatic sensor Do you have to use colored filters the same way as with panchromatic B&W film? for example, to darken skies or lighten skin tones?

Tadeo Velazquez I don't own one but based on what another reviewer said about the original monochrome, yes you need to use real filters. There is no color data so you can't replicate it with software such Lightroom, etc.

Hey Steve, love your reviews! :) I was wondering, have you tried the Voightlander 12mm f/5.6 and if so, how dows ir compare? Is the extra wide worth the 5.6 aperture compared to the 15 4.5? Thank you. Keep it up!

I'm not really all that impressed with the new camera. It doesn't move the game forward. I thought they would seriously update it so the new MM would be leading the pack, but from the sample photos I've seen, it's not that big of a game changer in terms of resolution or ability to retain shadow detail. Guess I'll stick to film for a while, I can buy a lot of sheets for that price.

+splootan Disclaimer* I shoot with an M6 and use tri-x myself, but.... not everyone wants to deal with film anymore, plus you can shoot at higher iso with modern digital cameras compared to film. I would love to have a Monochrom, I just can't justify that cost.

The question is, with a normal m9 or m240, cant I achieve the "very unique B&W style" using LR or PS and save a couple grand? oh leica leica...

Gonçalo Norberto Of course you can. I shoot with a M9-P and create my b&w images using Silver Efex Pro2. Look, I'm a huge Leica fan (M6, MP, M9-P), but this idea that somehow your b&w work is going to be substantively better by shooting with this rig or the previous monochrome is a crock, it really is.

Leica is in a unique Catch22 situation. The only ones who can afford their (frankly irrelevant) cameras, are old farts with failing eyesights. And the old farts desperately need autofocus to make a properly focused picture. It'd be hilarious if it weren't so tragic.

I guess this is why pro photogs don't do video ... they don't have the ability to "get to the point..." and just keep talking.... and not getting to the point of just the features ... and not an explaining that "some of us" will prefer the older design... Really???
