Thank you to all the subscribers and the Super thanks donations over the Christmas holidays!
This is a Model Railroad Review & Update. I also acquired two new locomotives for the River Road SRY Rail Link roster.
I never understood the colloquialism "A Railroad of Lies" in the so-called context of prototypical modeling. Every model railroad is a subjective reproduction in the same way any creative expression is, whether it be a play, a movie, a story, a painting, a model, a diorama, a sculpture or music.
Authentic creativity does not have to be a slave to the dogma of the prototype accuracy because the prototype is exclusive to itself in the real one-to-one world. All model railroads require severe compression which disqualifies the notion - "A Railroad of Lies.". A model railroad is an expression of how the builder interprets the world they choose to model, therefore, truth is relative to the art form and can hardly be construed a s a lie.

I would never dream of calling someone else's railroad a "Railroad of Lies." I'm sure some of us use this term as a defense mechanism to ward off those that might turn their nose up at making no attempt to faithfully represent a prototype. Criticism often comes when you are brave enough to share your work with the public, by being the first to point out obvious issues of your own work, you might save someone the effort of typing out a comment letting you know you got it wrong! 🙂 Thanks Boomer, always insightful and always inspirational!!

It would be interesting to see the layout of any modeller that would say such a thing about another's work. I would describe my layout as the confluence of my personal perspective(however limited that may be), and my moderate ability to portray it. No more, no less...

Howdy Boomer! Count me in on the locomotive repaint! I'd love to see how that is done. I'm new to the hobby and I can't tell you how helpful watching your videos are. I have no idea what I want to do for a layout yet (might not be staying where I am)... but you have given me an idea of what I can do to learn some of these skills. I'm thinking I'll start with a 4 or 5' diorama that I can incorporate my test & programing track into. Maybe a mainline with a couple spurs or something. I think that could be a lot of fun and a great way to figure out how to do stuff. Plus would look nice next to my modeling work bench. Nicely done and thanks for sharing 🤠

Greetings WJ From Colorful Colorado, The shot of Dusty is incredible. Dust looks like a chameleon who just changed color to match the surrounding colors. I can imagine Dusty's intense stare is focused on a pigeon on the roof of the"Slum Landlord Building" or under the overpass. This could easily be an Award Winning Photo. I'll bet Wendy knows where to enter it. If I had a copy I would hang it in my train-room to honor all that I have learned from you. "Railroad of Lies" I first heard as kind of a backhanded mocking of those that insist every detail has to be perfect. I use the term in the same way - all of our railroads are at some level a railroad of lies. I guess I can see the hardcore rivet counters using it a different way, but the "wars" between those that think the hobby should only be done one way and those that think its bigger than that have been going on as long as I'm alive.

RIght . . . on the other hand . . . I guess most paintings are lies as well, but the artist doesn't care or ever refers to the painting that way. It's all an expression unique to each individual as they build their own miniature world. 😁

Hey Boomer, I hope you're doing well. Good luck with the self-discipline regarding locomotive purchases. I gave up over 100 locomotives ago. I don't even try to kid myself anymore. Regarding the railroad of lies. Surely the comment was tongue in cheek. Nobody in the hobby could possibly be that crass could they? Looking at the finished section of your layout, it's hard to believe how much you've accomplished in such a short time, especially with so much detail. It looks like a lifetime of achievement, and you've only just started. I can't wait to see what you have in store for the final results. Happy rails.

I think the Hydro SD38 is great! If you can model in 3 dimensions, why not add a little fourth dimension by bringing in a predecessor heritage? MRL ran previous road paint jobs on diesels for a long time. I'm real curious to see how you might weather it. You could change just the reporting marks and let it show it's age and heritage. I'll wait and see what your creative mind comes up with. With over 25,000 subscribers you're doing something very right, and are providing inspiration and modeling techniques to your viewers. Ignore the peanut gallery. Some people try to pull everybody else down to their level of misery. They feel powerful if they succeed. Ignore 'em and listen to those of us who find such inspiration in your work! I'm inspired by the amount of detail you put into such a compact space. Thanks to your inspiration, I'm considering trying something like this for a small diorama that I can photograph models on.

Yes to loco repainting series. Actually, I have been having a lot of fun lately taking old Athearn blue box engines that I had bought for previous layouts a long time ago whose road name / paint doesn't fit my new layout. If I can't make run good, I just turn them into dummy's. They may not be fine scale but as a second unit in a consist, you don't really notice and basically free.. And if I mess up the paint, not a big deal.

Yep, I'm running a couple of little ScaleTrains Milwaukee Road SDL39s next to my ALCO roster on my little piece of the Minnesota Commercial. I've always had a huge soft spot for the SDL39 so I have no problem with doing the old: 'what if a couple stayed behind to work the Commercial?' Railroad of lies? - and so be it. Can't wait to see what you have in mind to replace that little memory from Glover Road. It's sometimes sad to move on from a memory, but no harm done if what comes after gives us greater joy.

The studio is off the charts! talk about detailing a story. I do what you explain, so now I am mixing paint and much to my surprise I am getting colors I like better than I can buy. I do have a question about the O scale paint job, you toned it down with flesh color, my question is will that work with lighter colored locos and rolling stock? You should have the work shop filmed be a easy way to get more information, just a thought. Thanks

Hi Boomer always pure pleasure and joy to see your work....and tease you a bit. C´mon one single trackmobile is plenty enough power for shunting your cars. OK we all know that modelers like to have as much units as a Class one. But sometimes shortlines play same game. So this one is a "rich" one ( you said "long time" ago about well maintained roadbed). So they have 4 and 6 axles locomotives. At least 2 different CC truck styles. 567 turbo 645 turbo and non turbo + switcher engine. The maintenance guy in backshop have fun with inventories parts. Real world offers funny surprises. Class 1 with steamer, shinny F units, all the Heritage series, not to mention the one with pile of Baldwin grassing uselessly in grass or that Easterner running RS3 with Bombardier HR412, all almost in different paint scheme and names. What a high ball signal (last one in "use" in Whitefield NH) it gives to modeler to freelance everything. Nobody can´t say that a train passing in a covered bridge is impossible. Well on that instance it is, the last one on the now track removed of the Lamoille Valley in VT... well if Lamoille Valley would still exist, the bridge will still being used... even defunct air line can be railroading. No limit. Diesel hydrogen, battery, battery charging, electric on third rail or pantograph, crewless DPU in the middle of consist or pushing in rear, even remote controlled from ground or hundred miles away in an office. Ok guys, since man back on the moon is next, who will built an HO scale layout of moon railroading ?

A yes to the loco repaint video from me. As for the "Railroad of Lies" such a destructive mindset. It's so easy to quash someone's enthusiasm with negative comments. Constructive criticism is useful, but being a slave to the prototype is not what most of us want. I happily run the odd loco that is from the wrong region and period. Most of my rolling stock is old and less detailed. So what? Look at things like Thomas and Lego trains. They attract more young people to the hobby than any super-detailed rivet correct wagon. Encourage others, don't flame them.

Yes please, a re-paint, and detailing turtorial on the hand me down loco would be great. Even though we all say, No More Locos, a new one, particularly if it is in the era you are modelling, is always good to add to the roster. Another great video and sage advice. I am still in awe of your layout in progress! I wish if I can achieve 25-40% of what you do, I will have a great layout! Absolutely incredible layout and tutorials - thank you for sharing!

Shave the size (footprint) of your layout down by 25-40% and you can. The trick is to build a smaller layout with a bigger presence fleshed out in the details. ;-)

Technically you didn't buy the Locomotives.... I love the movie studio, I have been pondering something like that to sneak in some of my Star Wars models and ships where the scale is not a problem as they are props! Looks great!

Want to let you know from one boomer to another…loved your review of the scale trains rivet series coil car with 2 different color hoods. Bought one & I also love it. You were RIGHT! Had to swap out their couplers for Kadees. Now everything is cool. So Thank you in a big way. love your work. Will it someday be a layout where trains will run distances either point to point or allow for continuous runs? I am just south of Quebec in the Adirondacks of New York. My fictional Wanakena RR does business with our local carrier (CP), Vermont Railway & Canadian National. Also have some Hudson Bay Railway thrown in as I’m a big fan… Keep it coming, enjoy….

The RIver Road plan is a point-to-point with stub end staging at both ends. The imaginary world is huge - the actual layout is very dense and chock full of story to keep me engaged for a long time. I prefer the last mile operations in a more intimate setting. Cheers and thanks for taking the time to share! ~ Boomer.

Boomer, Next time you have an operating session Dusty will have his own loco to operate and get in your way. Does'nt the layout look great simple scenes that just pop. Like a lot of people Boomer I have also wondered where you find the time. I find myself, being a dedicated "Couch Potato" ( Couch Time) keeps me busy and takes up all my days. To do it right you have to put in the hard yards. Cheers, Chris Perry.

Thanks for all you give us Boomer! Glad to be a student in your master class! I noticed a lot of details you've added. In particular, the switch stands. Are they scratch built, or bought AND do they work? Been looking into making the "Central Valley Models" functional.
