Great pike and coverage. I'm a steam nut and known for rough, unkempt scenery, but after seeing this magnificent layout, I'm going to invade my cases of early diesels and fire up my scale power lawnmower. Then finally learn how to build decent structures. I'm a fan!!! After then, I'm going to install a rather large Christmas tree in the basement and run my trains around it. Al, you outdid yourself on this one. This is your finest ever and keep up the fine work. David, congrats on a truly great model railroad!!!! Wow!!!!

If I can EVER get anywhere near the detail and quality of model railroading as this layout or so many other breathtaking layouts in the model rail YT community I’d have to thank all the channels like yours that cover layouts that are absolutely amazing. Suprised I haven’t watched this before. I used to absolutely hate transitional era because it’s a bit over modeled but now my secondary industrial park layouts intentional late transition era design to run early gen diesel switchers and just overtime appreciating so many transition era layouts I’ve began to really enjoy them all. I know the Western Mayland pretty well so I can attest that Mr. Hughs has captured the feeling of the place he's modeling better than most other modelers. Dear Al and David, indeed a beautiful layout! Love the way the helices are either shaped into the layout, or made a scenic part of the layout with the small diorama vista. Beautiful how David’s wife did the backdrop painting. Love the angled lines that she has chosen, which is such a great way to prevent the otherwise awkward look when, for example, a road comes at 90° towards the backdrop and is prolonged on the 2D image as going fully straight into the distance. The ‘askew’ approach definitely adds to the field of depth and the illusion of perspective. Absolutely awesome and stunning! Cheerio

Memories! My Mom was born and raised in Westminster, married and moved to MI. Back in the 70's (this layout's era 🙂), our family made the long road trip to Gramaw's in southern PA, then a side trip to visit friends who lived on Tank Rd, (Finksburg area) out in the country then. Us kids would walk down to the creek (which I now know as the N branch Patapsco River), and swim by the old WM trestle, roughly the bottom of the grade described at 15:00, about 1 mile east of Patapsco. I loved trains, and enjoyed watching for trains more than the swim, I think! Thanks for taking the care and faithfulness to detail to recreate this beautiful layout.
@davidhughes44484 ай бұрын
Sam: the location your remember swimming at, Patapsco, is on an eastbound downgrade, about halfway between Westminster and Cedarhurst (Finksburg, MD). At Cedarhurst the grade levels out, and immediately east of that point the grueling, twisting three-mile eastbound grade of 1.86% commences at Falls, up into Emory Grove. This three-mile stretch constituted the ruling grade into Baltimore from Hagerstown. Helpers were often required. When I was a kid I relished the pounding sound of multiple locomotives climbing up Falls Hill with a 100-car train. Glad you enjoyed the video.

Great railroad (as opposed to “a layout”). Nice to see using Caboose Industries switch stands is OK.
@davidhughes44484 ай бұрын
Allen: you are correct: they're "okay". Of course, they are way too large, out of scale. I experimented with the N-scale version, but found there wasn't enough travel in them for HO scale. I have weathered mine so they don't stand out like sore thumbs. The good news is that they are bulletproof. If I had it all to do over again I think I would would use the self-locking Peco turnouts. I simply wasn't aware of them when I started construction in 1999. Thank you for the compliment.

They were heading to Baltimore for the last of the WM F units NRHS run. One of them had a traction motor failure(fan trip), Does this mean we photoed the last WM F units on a freight train? We shot them at Laurel, Md. WM F units were always a treat to see and photo. Shame that only one was saved.

What is the smallest radius of the mainline curves ?
@davidhughes44484 ай бұрын
Roland: 22", and all curves on the layout are superelevated, with eased approaches. And thank you for your flattering comment earlier.
@rolandhersom2394 ай бұрын
@@davidhughes4448 I believe in giving credit where credit is due. My minimum is 22" also. That is only on one curve. The rest are 24". I used super elevation on the original hand laid and dog spiked track laid on individually cut 1/16 pine veneer ties, which is still in use after 61 years. My grade is 2 1/2 percent . I find that, with a long drag of 40 or more cars, the super elevation tends to shift the CG a little too far off the centreline of the track meaning that care needs to be taken coming into that uphill curve so that long and high cars such as 4 bay centre flow hoppers don't pull off towards the inside of the curve. There is no doubt that the super elevation looks prototypically great but on the extensions I opted for the flat curves. Roland

6 Tarkusest me kõneleme täiuslike seas; ent mitte praeguse ajastu ega selle kaduvate valitsejate tarkusest, 7 vaid me kõneleme Jumala saladusse peidetud tarkusest, mille Jumal on ette määranud meie kirkuseks enne ajastuid.
