I'm making one myself thanks to you Terry, ordered everything from eBay, it's gonna work out around £140 to build against the £250 EA want for theirs. So great to see you building and exploring, this is real diy and proper technical exploration! For the media, have you thought maybe to produce your own with 3d printer? Would suggest not a cylinder shape, to me it is related to the way it is produced spaghetti cut, but star shape, capable of building up an even thinner layer filter. For water coloration, may I suggest you give a try with tap water instead of pond one, pretty sure you'll see a difference. What about ozone, come on, give a try with not one but two other cylinders -> ozone with skimming injector then UV neutraliser. Sure you'll get amazing results and water quality ;-)
@Wrighty4 жыл бұрын
Hi Charles, I did look into ozone, but it just didn't seem to be my thing. I have a friend that has it. I do like to keep my pond a bit natural, that's why I run plants in my pond. I think it make for happier koi to be honest. I've not got into 3d printing yet, but might in the future. Thanks mate, take care and stay safe, Terry.

Hi Terry. Excellent work. I must say I don't fully understand the automation bit. Looks good but I haven't a clue how you made it! I've got my 200mm tube and ready to start on my Mk3 Up-Filter. I like your 110mm to 40mm/50mm reducer> can you tell me where you got it from. I see that James the Koi Whisperer is going to make an Up-Filter after seeing ours. I think he is only using half a metre or 110mm tube. Be interesting to see how well that will work. Stay safe.
@Wrighty4 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, and thank you. It still needs a bit of tweaking here and there but it does save messing about, just push a button and leave it. The 110mm reducer here: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110mm-50mm-40mm-pushfit-Solvent-weld-Reducer-plug-soilpipe-drain-fittings/112166397752?ssPageName= A lot cheaper than rubber. James has spent a lot on pressure fittings and it's going to be a bit of a pain having to take it apart to clean it. He does use a lot of filter floss, so it won't get as dirty as it would on my pond. Take care and stay safe mate, Terry.

Hi Marty, and thanks mate. I've tried to work it out and I think it's slightly less, around 7 to 8 gallon I think mate. I don't have an auto top up, I have a press button timed top up. That's so I can keep an eye on how much water is being added to the pond. Hope this helps mate, take care, Terry.

New fines filter and 'Wrighty Auto Clean" ... brilliant. Very nice job. Couple of questions. When the cleaning cycle kicks in and the solenoid opens to waste does it also shut off the supply inflow or does it shut off the pump that feeds it? Also is the air inlet for cleaning simply open to air or is an air pump attached? Amazing job and video as always.
@Wrighty4 жыл бұрын
Hi KR, and thanks mate. The pond pump is switched off and the 35 lpm air pump switched on and waste solenoid opened. Once the tube is empty, the air switches off and solenoid closes. The pond pump is then turned back on. Hope this helps mate. Thanks again, Take care, Terry.
@mykoiobsession4 жыл бұрын

Terry. Really great idea. Love the project. You make me doubt. To make a protein skimmer or this kind of your fabulous ideas. Your rdf is still working amazing on my pond. Is the air pump much higher then this filter or do you use a solenoid as well for the airline? 👍
@Wrighty4 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, I must admit I am pleased with it. Good to hear the RDF's still working well. Mines been running over 18 months now and I haven't touched it, apart from a quick high pressure mesh clean which all RDF's need. The air pump is on a bit lower level than this filter, but I have fitted a non-return valve to stop any backflow. It just switches on and off by the auto switch. Thank mate and take care, Terry.
@simonshears51824 жыл бұрын
So I take it that the solenoid valve, water pump and air pump is set to that timer . Quality auto flush design tho Wright 👍 As I hate those gate valves and ball valves can be a bugger to twist...

That's right mate, it's quite simple really. I had originally designed a different way of doing it, but scrapped all that and started again as it got too complicated. Like you say, pond valves can be a pain. Thanks mate, stay safe, Terry.

Well done Terry, looks great. Is it possible for any media to go in the end of the air pipe when you drop the water?
@Wrighty4 жыл бұрын
Hi Garry, thanks mate. Yes, it could get in the end of the air pipe , but it would get blown out. I've been using the same on my filters for years and not had a problem. So it should be ok. It does help that the air is kept working while the media is down the bottom. Thanks for noticing mate, take care and stay safe, Terry.

Great job as always Terry. What stops the feed water going to waste? I take it the controller turns the pump off, is there a second solenoid on the feed?
@Wrighty4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gary, and thanks mate. That's why it had to be higher than the water level in the moving bed, so when the pump stopped so did the flow. I also had to fit a non-return valve in the line. Thanks mate and take care, Terry.

@Wrighty4 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, I've only just finished it, so not had chance to cost it yet, but I will, and let you know. To automate it wasn't to bad. The timer was about £7.00 and the solenoid valve was about £30.00. I'm putting 6500 lph through it. You don't want to push the water too fast or you'll push the dirt with it. You'd have to have one of these each side turning over 5000 lph each.
