I had the Nikon J1. I only got it because it was about as close to free as you could get (without being free). I ended up REALLY liking it. I wasn't sure why everyone was downplaying it so much. I think the only real drawback to that system was the lack of lenses. I was able to get a lot of great shots with that camera, though. I am really looking forward to this new full frame (or possibly medium format?) announcement from Nikon.

To this day the Nikon 1 series is still my favorite camera. Even though I have a D750, and a Fujifilm X100F, Panasonic LX100, etc., I still use my cheap Nikon 1 S1 all the time and it's still my favorite camera. There are two people who reviewed the Nikon 1 series, those who used it and those who didn't use it. People who didn't use it (mostly everyone) gave it bad reviews. Those who DID use it have it good reviews.

1 thing I have to add is even with the new Nikon full frame system, I am not sure if or when I will buy the system. I have had the X-E1 for several years but with the introduction of the X-H1, I went much more seriously into the system and whilst the camera isn't perfect, it does feel great in the hand (the X-E1 is my favourite camera even now) but what stands out is the Fujifilm lenses which make the system much more practical. It doesn't matter if you have a small camera system, if you have to have massive lenses and this is one of the big things with the Sony, when you compare the size of the Sony lenses (apart from the Ziess lenses for Sony), they are very large. Now the large lens mount might help the Nikon mirrorless but generally they are going to be bigger than the Fuji lenses (or Panasonic/Olympus).

Absolutely great assessment of the current situation with the new Nikon mirrorless pending release. Absolutely love the Nikon 1 photographs I've actually been considering getting one for the last 3 months. I was thinking the one J5 but the V one has the viewfinder any thoughts or recommendations? Thanks for sharing. Still use my v1 and v2 occasionally but mostly for travel use the J5, shame it's missing an evf port... my other compact work horses are the Q7, M3, PL5 or GR. They all work and all take great pictures, horses for courses.

I've been waiting for Nikon mirrorless for years. I will follow its progress and look to get into the system as it matures. In the meantime, whilst waiting, I got into the Olympus m43 system and I really, really like it. So now I'm investing more in that system and will just wait a little while for the Nikon system to mature. I want to round out my m43 system with at least one more lens. I got into m43 because I wanted a smaller system for travel and hiking. I actually came very close to getting into the Nikon 1 system, but ultimately went with m43 because it was a more complete system with a full lineup of lenses. m43 does just about everything I need. I don't really need a FF system, as m43 will do 90-95% of what I need in a much more portable package. But I still want FF just because, so I'm excited to see what Nikon does next.

kevinknowscs I love the look of the Olympus system, but I'm just worried about ISO noise, having such a small sensor. Do you ever shoot at say ISO 6400 and if so, is the noise acceptable?
@kevinknowscs9460
@kevinknowscs9460 6 жыл бұрын
No, I never shoot that high. It's true, noise is a problem at that level. I try to keep it to 1600 or less. Base ISO whenever possible. I shoot mostly landscapes, and Base ISO looks totally fine to me. The IBIS is awesome, so even if my shutter speed is a little slow, it doesn't matter. Love the ergonomics of the EM1.2. It's just a very enjoyable system for me. This is a hobby for me. I'm not running a gallery. The image quality is totally acceptable for me.

Nikon v1 vs Sony NEX 7. This is why the 1 series couldn't compete. I don't know why Nikon didn't make an APSC version instead. It only seemed they were half interested in the mirrorless line up, seeing that their dslrs were their bread winners.

New lens mount is tough at first, but good over the long term. It can take into account all the advances in photography and technology over the last 60 years. A mount for the future. Something I can grow with and invest over the long term. Lots of great potential. Eventually they could make a retro-styled FM, re-release some old MANUAL focus lenses tuned to the new mount, perhaps even retro-styled. How about focus peaking that mimics the old split screen. That would be so cool. Who knows what they will do, but it sets them up to do a lot of stuff in the future that they couldn't do in the past very easily. Exciting times.

Thanks for sharing some nice V1 images. I've used a V3 for a couple of years as an occasional camera due to pocket-ability. Optional EVF not a problem, way better than the screen in tricky light. Got some decent images despite the "1-inch" sensor. Even managed some decent eclipse images. Grip pointless. Nikon lens adapter worked fine but proved of only limited utility. Expect new adaptor for mirrorless to be at least as good.

It is definitely exciting to wait and see what Nikon will introduce. I would love to see Nikon make it right on the first time. Me personally, I will stay with DSLR. I just love everything about DSLR and to be honest I dont see any advantage or benefit from switching to mirrorless. I love Nikon and since Im shooting with D850 there is no mirrorless camera which can convince me to change my system. The viewfinder, the lens selection, ergonomics, size, less dust on the sensor this is only a few things what mirrorless cant offer and I dont have to mention the IQ from D850. Thats epic.

You mention Sony, Canon, and Nikon for pro mirror-less, you missed a manufacture that currently makes excellent pro quality mirror-less cameras.... FUJI. Both the X series, and the GFX medium format. Why I mention Fuji, is I have switched from Nikon Full frame DSLR to Fuji just this spring and I love how well the Fuji is performing for my professional needs. I also own a Nikon 1v3 and have enjoyed that as well the last few years. My Fuji XT-2 is only a little heavier than the 1v3 and a lot ligher than my D3x, has weather resistance, and weather resistant lenses, and an awesome control surface via dials on top. And the real beauty of Fuji that none of other camera manufacturers do at present is they update the camera via firmware (as in add new features). The XT-2 on launch is a totally different camera compared to the current XT-2 with firmware 4.10. So though I look forward to how Nikon implements a mirror less system, I plan to stick to Fuji for the next few years.

Why can't Nikon give consumers what they've been asking for YEARS? A digital Nikon FM2. I loved my V1 as well. Nikon was on the right path design wise and their build quality was surprisingly good. Their sensor was too small however. This new camera looks like a recycled Nikon APS Pronea (remember these?) with a digital sensor. Yuk.

The revamped nikon lens mount has been a long time coming. The current hybrid mechanical electro setup is a nightmare for innovation. You got generations of nikon lenses that will work on any body, yes. It's true. But depending on the generation the level of functionality is different, sometimes basic, sometimes with metering, sometimes with AF, sometimes with 'D' functionality. It's crazy. Time to move towards simplification.

I shoot Sony mirrorless, and Nikon DSLR If the nikon mirrorless is close to the Sony performance, the Sony stuff will be up for sale. The real key to its success is the adapter. If it pairs well and gives DSLR level AF performance, it will be killer. Screw this up and adoption will probably be low - Sony didnt have the level of glass out there for A-mount to really transition people (nor was the performance good), whereas Nikon's best feature is their glass
@blakeparry1983
@blakeparry1983 6 жыл бұрын
The Sony glass is good, but there is a much smaller market for 2nd hand glass (particularly good stuff), let alone the 3rd party support. the 5d3 is still very popular here too, heaps also shooting Nikon though. I dont expect many to switch from canon or sony to Nikon, for Nikon this is about keeping their existing users happy, and providing an option for people getting into photography.

What NEW MOUNT!! I am use of the F mount, No when I seen in what Nikon first came out with the J and V series, that we did not want to stock it. As I remember calling it the Postage Stamp Sensor camera, and also a customer wanted to buy a Vintage Nikkor 135mm manual focus lens that he got an adapter for his Nikon Mirror less camera as of when he mounted it that made the camera LENS Heavy and his camera body mount was showing a slight problem of wobbling. That is great technology Nikon, I rather use my Fuji mirror less as I use my Nikkor lenses with right adapters, and in closing I went to the NIKON camera museum, one word, LAME. Nikon keep the F mount, and yes that was a Sony body that they use as the teaser, and why not they are the ones making their sensors.. And Nikon better say MADE IN JAPAN or lose face....

I've said for a while now that any mirrorless camera from Canon or Nikon only needs to have features as good as a Sony α6000 series with a flip out screen, better ergonomics, and the ability to adapt legacy glass with native lens performance. If Nikon or Canon just copied a Panasonic G85 with a larger sensor it would completely murder Sony's market share overnight.
