Funny, you mentioned the train gets sweeped of passengers before it does it's return run. Thought I'd tell you my quick story when I was one of those people that have slept to the end of the line. It was west bound on the Picadilly line to Heathrow. I was supposed to get off at Boston Manor but ended up in Heathrow and being so late at night it was the last train. This was back in 1985, no loop. I woke up and got to talk to the driver who kindly invited me to stay on the train and would take me back to the Northfields yard where he let me out onto Boston Road. I was the only passenger on that ride and I was so greatful. I'm now back in NZ. Love your stuff Geoff.

Thanks as ever, Geoff, for this informative vid. On 26th May 2022 I travelled the full length out and back having ducked out of the first train on the first morning as Friday’s Evening Standard carried an article suggesting that the first trains would be log-jammed! Anyway, hugely impressed by the line like everyone else. I stopped at each station to have a look round and without doubt this is a world class project that has been delivered. So much +ve comment to make but I’ll limit it to say that it was pleasing to see that signage and floor markings are well planned but kept to a minimum - contrast that with the mass of signs that have accumulated over the years on most stations. Some interesting ways crowd dynamics have been considered too. TfL had obviously increased staff presence but they were actively engaging with the public and were doing a great job - maybe they like having fully grown trains! Well done TfL. When you go to Woolwich, do checkout the signage from Woolwich Arsenal which isn’t that helpful though you can see the Elizabeth Line roundel from a distance (~100 yards) if you know what to spot. Overall, 10/10 and loads of gold stars. One other point thinking of enthusiasts - will railtours be able to traverse the line? Imagine an AC loco and coaches trundling through Custom House! Maybe headways, signalling interface, emergency evacuation and re-joining the network at the Abbey Wood end (amongst other considerations) may preclude such movements.

@peeky442 жыл бұрын
Just remember that if you get the Crossrail/Liz train from Heathrow to Paddington, it won't go into the new platforms until autumn. The connection tunnel Geoff shows in this video wouldn't be the route you use to get from Heathrow to Wembley - you'll arrive into the mainline station (platforms 11-14) and follow the route across the main concourse to get to the Bakerloo. From (probably) October when trains start through-running you *would* use the corridor.

@DavidWood22 жыл бұрын
The lengthy route is a huge improvement on the step-free access to the Bakerloo before yesterday, which was unavailable. The Bakerloo is the least accessible line on the Underground other than the totally inaccessible Waterloo and City. Even with the new step-free access at Paddington, there are only four accessible stations on the Bakerloo. In any event, the Bakerloo gets an entirely new step-free entrance and ticket hall under the new Paddington Square development later this year - see tfl.gov.uk/travel-information/improvements-and-projects/paddington-bakerloo-ticket-hall . Once this new entrance is open, the route Geoff showed in this video arguably becomes more about the interchange between the Elizabeth line and the Bakerloo rather than the primary step-free access to the Bakerloo line. Paddington Bakerloo line being step-free improves connectivity. In particular, you can now go step-free from Paddington to Willesden Junction, changing step-free at Willesden Junction to the Overground. Even a roundabout route is better than no Underground/rail route at all, and it is certainly worth adding access at key stations such as Paddington when the opportunity arises. Another example of adding accessibility during major works is at Bank, where the Northern line will become step-free accessible when the current improvement project concludes later this year. Victoria is a previous example of step-free access being added during major redevelopment. Sadly, there are still some huge gaps in step-free access, including at some key interchanges. There is no step-free access at Baker Street or Oxford Circus other than some limited interchanges with no access to the street (see the notes on the step-free map for more details). The only step-free access line at Waterloo is to the Jubilee line. The only step-free access at Euston/Euston Square is to the Overground and the westbound H&C/Circle/Metropolitan platform at Euston Square. At Paddington, the only platform that lacks step-free access is the anticlockwise Circle/District platform; you can go clockwise and double back at Edgware Road, though this is less than ideal. Adding step-free access to the existing Underground lines in central London is really challenging, especially at those stations that were built without lift shafts or where the lifts were replaced by escalators and the old lift-based surface building was demolished. The first project to use old lift shafts for step-free access is underway at Knightsbridge, where the old surface building had been demolished. Redevelopment gave TfL the opportunity to build new entrances and put new lifts in the old shafts. However, even with shafts in place and the opportunity to build surface access as part of a redevelopment, this is not a cheap project. There is more about the Knightsbridge works in the recently aired episode of Secrets of the Underground series 2 - I think it is episode 3.

@@stephenholt4670 You could use this as a way out, but it likely does not make sense to do so. It is not a step-free way out until the existing sometimes overcrowded Bakerloo exit is replaced by the new one in the Paddington Square development. Once the new exit is open, it only makes sense to exit there if you want to be well up Praed Street in the direction of Edgware Road. Even those who do want to exit there will likely be no worse off exiting the Elizabeth line station and cutting across the National Rail concourse.

I am glad this long overdue railway has been built but even allowing the known shortcomings of dividing the "line" into three operations "temporarily" due to signalling differences... there were quite a few shock surprises when I was on it last week... The first was how slow it is getting into Paddington from Heathrow. Heathrow Express train is clearly faster (and at a cost) but the train was pretty much going at a reasonable speed until the final third or so of the journey (from Ealing I believe)... it is like a low-priority branch line. Non-stop GWR trains and Heathrow Express darting past. Not sure if held up by signals (there was stopping but usually crawling forward), waiting for platform availability, a fault or maybe just the specific service I was on... but it was frustrating waiting for the train to make it to the platform. I am hoping with time this will be dealt with as your run of the mill tube train seems faster. The second was the lack of experience as a passenger going through the station (once getting over the awe of it all being new) finding lifts hidden away was pretty frustrating, wayfinding could be better... once you work it out you know for next time, but it is certainly something that was overlooked as they went for large station concourse.
@JamesTheBell12 жыл бұрын
I suspect that not many people are changing to the Bakerloo yet because people coming from the east aren't likely to want to head back south-east, as there's shorter ways to make those journeys, or head north-west, because that's out of central London. Maybe that corridor link will get more use once trains are running through from Reading.
@rosiefay72832 жыл бұрын

Great to see Betty’s Basement is up and running! And what a nice surprise to see young Lewis on the video! Well only be going from Liverpool St to Tottenham Ct Road but hey, it still counts! 😜 Only thing missing was the gratuitous flapping bag shot…I suspect alas that this is considered a bit tatty for our brand new line. When the Elizabeth line is completely open, it will be a challenge for Heathrow express, which is so expensive.
@justanotherviewer48212 жыл бұрын
I was on the Elizabeth Line from Heathrow... its slow from Ealing into Paddington... (or for at least the service I was on) GWR and Heathrow Express (which is run by GWR, with the premium likely netted by the airport) takes presence. I wouldn't be surprised if they kept both services (EL and HX) by maintaining the delay in line speed. The "Heathrow Premium" for the Elizabeth Line is said to be due to the late opening of the EL to recoup costs... it is actually more likely a premium that Heathrow Airport demands for operating the service on its land. The HX is worth the cost compared to EL... more frequent, plenty of luggage space, no stopping and faster service. All a cash cow though. Considering EL and HX shares the same infrastructure there isn't any real need for the EL to serve Heathrow until it is connected through. Although I am sure GWR are unhappy with the extra competition, and I don't just mean the airport!

Is there a gate line between the Elizabeth Line and the Bakerloo (or indeed any of the other lines at P)

Would be nice to see if the "this corridor is x meters long" message at 8:38 is accurate or is it like the "this staircase is equivalent to a storey building"

Anyone notice the TVM Block Marker at 5:23? Didn’t know they were using these on the Liz Line and thought they were limited to high speed lines in France and HS1/2. Separate Note - is there barrier free access between the Elizabeth Line and the Bakerloo Line at Paddington Stn?

Another great video, Geoff! In your Tottenham Court Road video, I hope you comment on a few shortcomings as regards changing from the Central Line to the Elizabeth Line. When I travelled on Tuesday between TCR and Whitechapel I noticed two things: 1) Signposting of the Elizabeth line from the Central line platforms is quite poor, with the displayed signs being rather small and hardly “in your face”, and 2) Having to go up, touch out from the Central line before touching in again to go back down to the Elizabeth line seems a huge waste of time!

Very soon and once it’s fully operational and even now the line is getting on with the job like it’s been there all the time and soon like the Victoria we will be saying how did we get on without it and the delay in its opening will be just a memory to be honest it is to me already ,very nice hope it’s kept nice and clean too
