I've always loved Monster Hunter's big heavy shields as an aesthetic, so I'm really glad to see that the Gunlance's shield will finally be seeing use as more than just a decoration! Although I do want to clarify, incase anyone sees 0:45 and gets confused, perfect guard can still take chip damage, it's just that the lessened knockback indirectly reduced the chip damage to zero. Low knockback = No chip damage Medium knockback = 10% chip damage Large knockback = 20% chip damage, if I remember correctly.

I just hope the devs don't end up pulling another Iceborne, when they decided they don't really like blocking as a playstyle and started introducing more and more attacks that were either completely unblockable, even with Guard 5 and Guard Up, or that caused so much chip damage that taking them to the face was actually the less deadly option.
@michaelmcdonald20053 ай бұрын
I know you mentioned it in the video, but I can't stress enough how important the change to WHEN you can guard is. Being unable to cancel the recovery of attacks with guard in older games is one of my least favorite parts of being a Lance main, since you CAN cancel endlag with evade. Now that we can cancel with guard, combat for guard Lancers is going to feel SO much better than it used to. Easily my favorite change so far. Time to play Sekiro on these monsters
@petercottantail78503 ай бұрын
I'm not saying gunlance should be weaker, but what you were describing was what gave it a reason to be methodical when attacking, knowing when you could do something safely and rewarded using s correctly to dish out more damage, or end your attack early so you could guard. gunlance had both fast attacks and heavy commitment, which let both newer players and experienced have a way to enjoy the weapon. now it's more of a turn your brain off playstyle with little commitment, which is what other weapons were for the people who wanted that kind of experience, while this one was for people who wanted something more out of their weapon. this is similar to people who praise capcom for giving swax a counter because they thought it didn't have any defensive options even though all they had to do was switch back to axe mode for better mobility but just wanted to spam sword mode.

Evade Lancing will still be just as viable as before, it's just that they've added a new playstyle. Once again, this is coming from a Lance main, not a Gunlance one

Especially since evading doesnt build the guard clash(and subsequently the weapons that focus on evading cant guard clash) that means that even the slower weapons that often have trouble keeping up with quicker monsters(such as greatword or gunlance) can make their own openings, while weapons with lower dps outputs like the lance can still greatly contribute to a hunt through holding the monster with a power clash. Personally i think that this is the best possible way they could have balanced guarding while tapping into the power fantasy of being a brick wall.

I would argue that guarding is much stronger than evading now, to a significant degree. The base evade is a commital option with few actual i-frames, so you are relying almost entirely on movement to get you out of the way of an attack. It is still very easy to get hit while evading. With guarding there is really no such threat unless the attack has insane chip damage. You also have the opportunity for much more potent follow-ups with perfect guard. Unless they add many more monster attacks that circumvent guarding or cause significant chip damage, I don't see much reason for shield weapons to dodge besides to occasionally reposition.
@thecyanpanda2413 ай бұрын
@kyaru-chan4987 don't forget it costs stamina too, meaning that higher knockbacks cost more stamina. Honestly I want to know how lance power guard works with all of this, and how it counts towards the power clash build-up(as a normal guard or perfect) since against multi hit attacks like rajang multi swipe it would be one of the best options to guard with.

Personally not a fan of it if there is little reason to evade now. if Prefect Guard means no chip damage, we get stronger followups, ability to reload... why bother ever evading? I think evade lancing was very fun in older games so i think its a bad of a shame to see the that style will be completely overruled. I feel like most of the buffs to guarding here are fine but cancelling into guards from attacks means evade now rarely has a purpose and we can overextend in a lot of unsafe position and just cancel into guard without needing to worry about position as much. If we have perfect guard and good followups but cannot cancel into it and thus need account for attack recovery time and think about when we should use evade instead for cancellability, I think that would be a better balance and give evades and guarding both their own place in the game. With being able to cancel into guard now it makes the weapon too risk free IMO
@Syn-eo7yv3 ай бұрын
Respect the opinion, but cant relate. This is very exciting for me. While I do enjoy a well timed dodge, I became a Charge Blade main in Worlds because of guard points and how offensive you can play. Take the cancelling into guard comment with a grain of salt, I doubt you can cancel in the middle of any animation, probably more towards the end, though maybe with a bit more freedom than the older games. There's also the chance this could change before the full release. Only time will tell.
@rexzakel18023 ай бұрын
@@Syn-eo7yv I dont think evade style play is necessarily opposite of offensive but it certainly makes it more cerebral to play offensively since a lot more factors need to be considered. Before, you can guard only if an attack fully recovers which you can have the time to do if your punish was very early and leaves a lot of time. On the other hand, you can cancel into sidesteps which dont have much i-frames and cant work against all attacks with so whether you can cancel early into sidestep and have that work depends highly on the monster and position. You often must think if you want to commit to a bigger punish because if you do it in a place where you cant reasonably sidestep cancel to evade, you must think of whether or not you have enough time to guard instead. Do smaller punishes when you want a big enough window to get to your guard, or cancel into sidesteps if your positioning and timing was good enough to make that possible Guard perhaps did not have enough benefits to make it be used even when it could be, but I think cancelling into guard is overboard because it takes away that aspect where both have their benefits and drawbacks. Weapons that focus on cancelling into guards and counters have their own appeal, but I think Lance, CB, and Longsword have that archetype covered. I dislike seeing Gunlance also become incredibly guard focused and giving you no reason to ever evade. It means there is no more low mobility weapon that still has to use some mobility which I think was a very unique archetype that you'd only find in Monster Hunter and nowhere else, and with this change it might be gone for good.
@Syn-eo7yv3 ай бұрын
@@rexzakel1802 Like I said, we should wait to see how the guard cancel really works before jumping to conclusions. In this video, it seems like the guard comes out well after the attack hits, not in the middle or early parts of the attack. We're also getting the shelling side-step, which is amazing and makes me feel like dodging is still going to be useful. I do think that the shelling side step is good enough, especially with the guard points and perfect guards, in which case, I hope the guard cancel isn't too broken. The guard cancel shouldn't even be necessary if guard points are implemented properly. At the end of the day, gunlance mains are given more options for different types of playstyle (guard vs evade) or maybe a combo of both, so I'll take it as a win. I do agree with you that it may seem a little OP, but we haven't got our hands on the game yet to see.
