Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are games. Pokemon games. At this point you probably already know what I'm going to talk about.
Maybe the Nintendo Switch 2 will magically make things better.
Originally I wrote a much longer script for this video, but it wasn't working, which is why this ended up being a shorter vid than usual.

Another thing to consider is that those older games didn’t LOOK outdated when they came out, in fact, most pushed the boundaries of what was possible at the time and were beautiful to behold for the gamer. The Pokémon games have never been accused of pushing the boundaries of game art design.
@TheAbsol7448

I wouldn't say Pokémon ever actually pushed boundaries. There are more visually impressive games on every single platform Pokémon ever came out on. The DS was actually where Pokémon started to fall behind on what was "visually impressive," even if the DS games looked great. (Dragon Quest 9.)

Yea, it had all the Pokémon “programmed” into it, although they just reused the models and animations from the previous game (didn’t bother me too much but still). Using this logic X and Y would be seen as peak 3D pokemon as the devs had to create all the pokemon (and new ones) in 3D from scratch.

There's one thing I wish people would stop being so forgiving about, the whole idea that games *HAVE* to release because of "anime, merchandising, cards, etc need to line up!" The Pokemon Company reports their financial earnings, and as a private company, they're under zero obligation to do so. Yet, they still come forward & break down how much money they make to let people know how strong the brand is. You know what they specifically say in those reports? Merchandising/licensing doesn't make up a "significant" enough portion of revenue to report, then follow it up by saying "all earnings are from *GAMES ONLY!" So every fiscal report they release only covers the video game sales... and because they don't have to report ANYTHING, it's pretty telling to me what makes up the most significant portion of their income, otherwise they'd lump it all together & say "we made this even LARGER amount of money this year!" That'd be easy & make their numbers even bigger right? Yet they don't... Even if the licensing & merch makes a good chunk of change, it's not worth hampering your primary driver of revenue to accommodate the side things! It'd be like if a Pizza chain who makes 90% of its revenue from pizza swapped out to its dough just to make its bread sticks taste better, even though it makes the pizza taste like ass. Why do that? The games make billions on their own, selling more than most AAA games & all being sold for full price! Even the most high budget AAA games go on sale quite often, but not Pokemon! It's almost always a full $60 for all 15-25 million copies sold. And since they're not investing as much into development as other AAA games get, the return on investment is even greater! So how in the hell can we excuse billion dollar-earning games looking/running like garbage, just because new million dollar licensing products need to come out at the same time? It's nonsensical! Sorry for the rant, it just really bugs me when we all know how much JUST THE GAMES make!

People who give the graphics a pass in favour of gameplay need to understand that Pokemon's gameplay isn't anywhere close to a point where it's refined enough to justify diverting resources. The battles in Scarlet and Violet are SO SLOW it's absurd. It's 2022 and the ampersand (&) is still an innovation that Game Freak has yet to master, because instead of just saying "Pawmi was poisoned and took damage" It's "Pawmi was hit by poison tail" 1, 2, 3, 4, "It's not very effective" 1, 2, 3, 4, "Pawmi was poisoned" 1, 2, 3, 4, "Pawmi was hurt by the poison" 1, 2, 3, 4. Which REALLY adds up across hundreds of battles, especially when you start adding in the same nonsense with stat changes, switches, abilities, and on and on and on.

One of the most interesting things I've noticed about Pokémon reviews is that they get compared to other Pokémon games only. I think in this particular case, time is a valid excuse. COVID drastically altered the entire globe with the effects still being felt to this day. Lockdown started roughly two years ago, so roughly 67% of the production time was affected in some way. SV was also by FAR the most ambitious title they've done with several new mechanics. Yes, you can spend more money, but keep in mind that it's difficult to bring in new people and expect them to be fully competent and gelled in with the rest of the team immediately, particularly when in person meetings are infrequent at best. If GF didn't care about the series, they wouldn't have attempted to make a fully open world title with branching missions, something that had never been done before in the franchise. Now if the NEXT generation of games comes out and there's been no progress on game performance/visuals, then I'd be more inclined to say GF or Nintendo itself is the issue.

I have to wonder if this is an intentional sacrifice by Nintendo. They haven't had many releases from their most popular franchises over the last couple years and the next one is still more than half a year out. Maybe they figured Pokemon fans are used to mediocre games and fans will probably buy it anyways. So if they're going to rush something out the door before it's ready, might as well be a Pokemon game. That's the only way I can see this happening. Nintendo has many faults, but their games are at least consistently solid on a technical level. And yeah, I know it's technically Game Freak who developed these games. But Nintendo has a lot of fingers in the poke-pie and as publisher and co-owner of the IP they must have known how broken these games were before release.

They contract out for the card game. They contract out for the anime. They contract out for the merch. And so on. The Pokémon Company's entire job it to manage the brand and make sure everything is released at the same time. They would have to renegotiate so many contracts and affect so many people's jobs that even a minor delay would be a nightmare. Everyone keeps bitching about it being the highest grossing media franchise but the games are probably a tiny, tiny slice of that. A nice plush can cost as much or more and have way, way less development cost. They are the highest grossing franchise because they stick to the schedules and, unfortunately, prioritize the mist profitable aspects. As someone who mostly shows up fur the games, I don't like it, but I understand that's how it is. Should/ could they develop things with more leeway? Probobally, and boy do I wish they would, but that would probably cost way more in terms of money and strain on business relationships than people are willing to admit. I wish there was a game like Pokémon that pushed gameplay experience first, and smaller gameplay teams have tried to fill some of the individual niches that Pokémon games hit. Temtem, coromon, monster sanctuary, abomi Nation, and bravery network online all barely capture different parts of the Pokémon experience. It turns out it's real hard to do all that Pokémon does, or even just so **some** of it well. I don't say this all as apologia for a huge corporate hydra, but man there must be a lot of individuals in there, especially in the game development teams, trying their best and being way more disappointed in the results forced out of them by the corporate juggernaut than any whining online fan.

@@Kevmane_the_birdI read your take, but Nintendo Game Freak or whoever is in charge could … just hire more people to develop the games. It is not that complicated, it is a question of man-hours of work. Their team is way too thin (and by now even old) for their size and revenue and schedules. Hire 2x or 3x more people there, and all the Pokémon games issues could be solved and improved while obeying the schedule. More artists to draw all the Pokémon instead of cutting the Dex, more people to code, etc. Maybe even to release more games, like a new Pokémon Mistery Dungeon. But Pokémon fans eat the mediocre productions does not matter what, so The games can have maximised profits, which means minimal effort.

I will say ever since SwSh discussion around pokemon game development has been tainted. I really appreciate your video existing since I feel a ton of people just see "Highest Grossing Media" franchise stuff, see the big number, and then assume its just laziness. One thing I will debate you on is I don't believe it would be impossible for a Pokemon game to be delayed a great example of this is during Pokemania they delayed Gen 2, and as a result the anime did the Orange Islands arc. Considering that I'd say if they ever needed to delay a game they could push back merch or figure something out for the anime, and even then the anime as of late is less focused on a specific region and more general meaning it's not super reliant on the games to push into new stuff. Outside of that I wholeheartedly agree Time is the biggest issue, in fact it's always been a massive issue for Pokemon (thanks to gigaleaks of gen 3 and 4 prototypes we can see even the older games faced tons of crunch and minor delays) it's an issue I feel they were able to balance in the 2D era, but I'm betting we're nearing the point where the straw will break the camels back. Crunch Culture isn't idolized, likely the dev team was struggling hard with time limits, Masuda (who in articles mentioned he works better in stress) is officially gone from Pokemon development, unless the newer heads share the same philosophy which could happen I could see a shift in the Pokemon release cycle coming eventually. I wanna say soon, but honestly I doubt it'll happen this gen. Amazing video again!

I preface this by saying that I'm not a Pokémon fan. I haven't played a new release since X and Y and I was not sold on the experience. At least I don't remember any of it in games like Mario 64 or even Oblivion. The fact that it's in Scarlet and Violet is not what was intended, therfore it looks bad and lessens the experience. All and all it should not have been allowed to release, schedules be damned. They have enough money to take a hit and work to deliver a quality product. Sword and Shield didn't look good either, and this looks worse. I wouldn't count on things to get better. And you can't really blame the Switch because it plays games like Breath of the Wild, Skyrim, and Doom better than this one. And none of those were made from the ground up for the Switch. While I like the content of the video.. I wholeheartedly disagree with the premise. The problem is certainly NOT time.. That project triangle thing says time, cost, quality. Pokémon games fail in two of them! And it's not because they don't have the funds, they just decide not to increase the costs.. so that is WORSE that being lazy! The dates are entirely their choice. Period. And looking at Arceus, this is the norm and what we can expect.. and that is visually! Gameplay has been a flat line and a constant disappointment, so there's also that.

These games look like they are a mod for some old game where the modder ripped the pokemon assets from something else. They clearly have this art direction going on for all the characters and the pokemon and even if you don't like how they look they at least look coherent. They then stopped doing that for the rest of the world. It feels like they are absolutely out of their depth with the 3D environments here and probably at this point, out of ideas. How often can you tell the same story and then sell two versions of that? Nintendo CoD basically, they are probably gonna remake old gba games in 3D next or something to get the nostalgia going like how everyone else does it nowadays.

I love the franchise, but ive been boycotting officially pokemon games since lets go pikachu. My central objection is about not including all previous gen pokemon in the game, and the fee for transfering pokemon between games through the bank. Not sure if this is up-to-date information, but i felt like i need to draw a line in the sand :p also, why cant we just have Pokemon Colosseum with HD graphics?

The first two minutes just makes this (these?) game(s?) sound like what Pokemon Go should have been. I got so excited for Pokemon Go. Then I found out it was just another shitty mobile game version of a better game. If it had real pokemon battles I would have played the shit out of it and gotten a lot of exercise, but it didn't so I didn't, to the detriment of my waistline. So my experience with the pokemon series remains the original Red and Silver on the Gameboy Color, which were great games. Hell, my old Gameboy still works, when I take it apart and clean the button contacts.

It’s not just this fixed schedule for two joint releases mixed with Covid that messed up the dev time. Game Freak make more than just the ‘&’ titles. There was Arceus which released in 2022. That’s effectively three ambitious open world games in one year. And then before the pandemic, for the majority of the last decade, Game Freak were releasing games on an annual basis. In 2019 they released Giga Wrecker Alt, Little Town Hero *and* Pokémon Sword and Shield. Four games! And only a year after Pokémon Quest and the two ‘Let’s Go!’ games. This ain’t a small thing to overlook.

When I stopped playing on the swtich and moved to the TV with it, WOW, so much different, Graphics can still be better by a lot but it felt FUN! Anyone wanting to play these , yes they have no excuse for not upping their graphics game in 2022 but you have GOT to give it a try, Play on your home TV, I have the OLED screen on the switch so it should look great.. But the pokemon are too small, PLAY ON THE TV! There are even Pixels showing on the pokeball on the switch, But the TV is a game changer for this game. open world =TV.

this honoustly just seems to be the standard for game development period. if nothing else it's a direct result of investors wanting the greatest return for the lowest possible investment. where before game developers had the room to take at least SOME pride in their work. klet's not even get started about game devs hiring staff for every project and letting them go after the initial release because that's somehow cheaper?!

Definitely doesn't help that the Pokémon franchise operates in a way that basically has no downtime in sales/outputting something, whether that be seasons of anime, tcg, and merchandise, along with operating basically sane way since the ds games, so the Pokémon company has even less incentive to give the devs more time to polish, due to them needing to then delay everything probably, which is majorly not good, the choices they make

Let's also take into account another thing: style vs graphics. If a game *looks nice* even old then even on outdated looking meshes a texture update and a lighting update can speak volumes if there's style backing it up. Best example would be Morrowind. It's old, draw distance is ass and the animations make Aqua Teen Hunger Force look like Akira by comparison. Saying that though if you go out, upscale the textures and increase the draw distance and 9/10 times that game still looks *nice* which is Pokemon's problem. Most of it looks too generic or budget PS2 grade which conflicts as is said alright with some high quality nice looking models.

When your GameCube titles like Colosseum and XD has on par or better graphics/animations. Also, GameFreak has only 169 devs and here I thought Valve was the least employed AAA devs (~300). For a series that always releases annually, you would think they would take a page out of another billion dollar annual franchise, Call Of Duty. Have 2 or 3 dev studios that rotate between to give the studios some breathing room and have time to develop those games, ala COD.

To add salt to the injury even sword and shield is based on go pikachu and go eveee engine the one that started the mess. Gen1 remake is a mess and gen4 dont. Ironically done by another company.

The thing is, they made in 3 years a game that performs worse than it's previous iteration, even tho they could just used the assets from that previous game The game runs like dogshit, like, it runs like a yanderesimutor build And about Switch, you can have games that run good and are massive (for it's own perspectives), nintendo games should be aways aiming for consistency and quality, i have not seen BTOW being this bad before. Bro, Sword and Shield and even Legends Arceus are better titles, they run better and don't glitch as much And how can they mess this up? Maybe they fire the development team after launch In three years, three years, they made a game thats far worse than 2 of it's previous titles (let's forget DP remakes) for no reason. A indie dev in 3 years would made a better game, smaller probably, but more consistent

One issue that I see that was honestly self imposed...... S/V has a day/night cycle but it's not linked to the time of day, it's where a minute is a hour. While that sounds nice, they sped up the day cycle while implementing a very ambitious proper lighting system. So if you just stand there, you can see the sun and shadows move as they would. I feel that has to be a huge drain on the game's performance.

Four 3D games in on the switch Gamefreak should know what it's doing by now even with the time crunch. The word isn't lazy, it's incompetent, stuborn, bullheaded and tunnel vision. I mean what kind of aspiring Game dev says. "We're not making anymore staduim games because 3D pokemon are no longer surprising." "Or we're removing this feature because most people don't use it (you know the ones that pick the game up once and never touch it again, not the ones that actually pick up the game over and over to use said feature) *cough* Battle frontier. While time might help iron out kinks in the code, I honestly have yet to see a game from Gamefreak that feels like they went above and beyond for quality. These games make it the most obvious. The stories are always simple, the game play usually stays the same, and the lack of heart and soul is just so in your face. Another tuber I watched said it right, these games are just disrespectful. It doesn't take a genius to look at something and think, 'Hey I might be able to make this better' Time could help but it's not the main issue with Pokemon games.

Yeh, p much the game feels rushed on the same way Sonic 06 rushed Because if it wasnt for the constant hiccups and low quality on the environment, the game would be solid and if not like one of the best pokemon games ever I do think GF gets rushed to hell and back to get a game before the rest of the pokemon generation get to the other medias (cards and anime); the silence about it might say either Nintendo/TPC gives them good money to keep quiet about the crunch or they get fairly paid and get treatment for their crunch; or maybe they dont even get crunched and just lack time
