If my knowledge of Group C racing is correct, this particular Porsche 962C was the 1993 version run by Joest Racing in the IMSA GT series, hence the larger bi-plane wing at the back. It was technically the last year for the car in Group C racing as the World Sportscar Championship was cancelled the previous year. The only places where the 962 could race was in America and Japan. In America, the 962C was effectively a dinosaur compared the Toyota Eagle Mk. III cars run by Dan Gurney's outfit and it showed. Slower and outpaced by the more advanced and powerful Toyotas, the only race it won during the '93 season was at Road America, and that was only because the Toyotas were absent during that race. Of course, this was a time when the GTP category was dying and there was hardly any competition left to run against. The next year, GTP was out and in stepped the WSC category. Elsewhere in 1994, the 962C still somehow got a last hurrah but in slightly unusual circumstances. The newer GT1 category was established and Porsche managed to sneak in with, what was essentially, a road going version of the 962C, built by Dauer Racing. So, Porsche were running a race going version of a road going version of a race car that was built in the early 80s. Don't try to wrap your head around it, you'll just get an aneurysm. In Japan, the 962C did get a proper last hurrah in the All Japan GTC Championship. And what a way for this car to bow out. In it's time, it's faced the titans of motorsport; against beefed up Jaguars, rotary powered Mazdas, Nissans and the might of Sauber. It faced them all and beat, well, most of them. But in it's last days, it was running against jacked up Japanese saloon cars... and the occasional Ferrari and Lamborghini.
@minorseven27915 жыл бұрын
Didn't read it all, but liked. You sound like you know what you are talking about
@christianponicki95815 жыл бұрын
GTP wasn't dying in 1993. Grid numbers hovered around 15-20 cars, compared with WSC's typical 10-15, and GTP's peak of 20-25. IMSA was experiencing a slouch, recession, retraction, whatever you'd want to call it, but only because of the Group C chaos in Europe at the time - when Group C was sabotaged by the FIA, it made GTP cars harder to source from Europe, but this was just a short-term blow to IMSA, and they easily could've ridden it out and rebuilt the GTP class. By 1993 there were easily 400-500 GTP-eligible chassis in the world, and teams+engineers had over a decade of experience building and running them. But IMSA completely ignored this, and instead they blew up the GTP class forever in 1992 by announcing, "Next year is GTP's last season, pack your bags and get out." So teams cancelled their programs, packed their bags and left, which might also explain 1993's slump. (There's also the fact that IMSA openly planned on scrapping GTP ever since John Bishop sold it to new owners in 1989-1990.) The huge number of Group C/GTP chassis in the world also probably explains why they kept winning Le Mans half a decade after their class was cancelled. In 1994, a Porsche 962 won Le Mans, trailed by 5 more Group C cars. In 1996, a Jaguar chassis won under the Porsche name, and in 1997 it did it again. Group C had massive longevity and tended to stick around whether you liked it or not. IMSA pretty much clawed defeat from the jaws of victory by dumping GTP.

The Sauber C9 and Mazda 787B would be hilariously uncompetitive against these cars (~16 seconds slower per lap.) The second I started watching the video of the guy getting beat up by the Porsche , I instantly saw the grandstand and realised it was Sandown. I grew up only streets away from the track in the 80's and moved back there a few streets closer in my late 20's but I have NEVER seen footage of the old infield section! As much as it's my home circuit, I've always thought it was batshit boring and always wondered why they did away with the infield section, only to make the kink at the end of the back straight a recipe for disastrous crashes and long safety car periods if not red flags. So for that Dumfries video you linked Jimmer, with the effort he was putting in at those low-mid speed turns I'd shudder at the thought of the current layout of Sandown - they've long ditched the "infield" section after the back straight (at 1 min 04 sec), instead it's back to the fast, flowing downhill set of esses (probably would have been above 200km/h if it existed back in the day) into the 90 degree left-hander (current Turn 9) at 1 min 44 sec... and to do 1000km (or 800, according to the history books) around it :o

So almost all group C cars, especially the 962s, have a synchro-mesh box. So you have to shift whilst counting out one Mississippi. The reason the first ever 962 (962-001) failed in its first race (Daytona 24, 1984) was because the gearbox failed due to shifting it like a formula style dogbox. Slow down the shifts, smoother ride, less misses Otherwise good to see you ina proper car mate!

Thought you might be driving the Nissan, as I had previously suggested to Chris Haye. This is a promising mod, I'd like to see some more Group C machinery represented - not just the usual suspects like the Sauber-Mercs, the Toyota and Mazda cars, and the Jags, but also the long tail Porsche 962 and 956, and more obscure cars like the Aston Martin AML1, the Lancia LC2, and even the overwhelmingly crap Ford Probe GT. And as many different liveries as possible. Just one more question - is RaceRoom actually free?

Hey Jimmy. Dunno if you read these, but you mentioned setting up cars for curbs. I know the problem can't be fully negated but I'm just wondering what I should focus on to make the reaction to curbs a bit more tame and recoverable? I'm messing about with the BMW v12 lmr in project cars 2 and I love the experience, but at any speed just a slight curb tap more often than not results in a sudden and violent spin. I'm guessing the problem is most affected by damper settings. Any thoughts?
