Dress your energy, not your age. I love that. I just turned 70 but I don't feel that at all. I kept worrying that I was dressing too young and looked silly. I'm not going to worry about it anymore.

When I was in my forties and early 50s (I’m 61 now) I had a tenant in my office who was in her 70s. The ripped jeans style was in and she showed up in ripped jeans. You know what I thought? I guess it’s okay to wear jeans to the office now!! She had the figure of a model and great fashion sense (but sadly she was not a very good therapist, LOL).

I’m 58 and Ive got to admit…I’m having the time of my life with fashion. I’ve lost 45 pounds and am feeling so good about myself. Do I wish I had done this in my 30’s and 40’s? I don’t think so. I was raising my daughter and didn’t have a lot of time to myself. I refuse to dress like my friends (not being mean). I want to be that woman who cares about her style. (To stand out). Good video!

I have 2 observations about hair - for the record, I’m currently a 72y.o. who wears her hair in a bob that doesn’t quite reach my shoulders: First, In the movie Minority Report, there is a scene where Max von Sydow, is being given an award (a golden gun). The camera pans to the award show attendees who are all very successful business men and their wives (all aged at least 50+). Everyone of the perfectly groomed women had short hair, which was supposed to show they were “older women” and to convey age. I thought, hmmmm, not the image I want to convey…age? Nope. The second story is personal. When my mother was in her late 50s, she had female pattern baldness, so her hair was very thin, very fine and salt and pepper. She chose to wear a long blond wig to conceal this. It ended about 4” past her shoulders. I, who was in my mid-30s at the time, asked her why she chose to wear that length instead of a short haired wig. She told me it was because the long wig was her “youth and beauty.” She then put on a short wig so that I could do a comparison. She was right. She looked about 10-15 years younger in the long wig. My reaction that day was “More power to you, Mom.”

I have hair loss. It has gotten much worse in the past four years , after a bad case of Covid. I have lost a lot of hair and five teeth. My teeth are crumbling under my caps. I now have a partial plate.I would love to do implants, but it takes so long to actually get them in, I decided to go ahead with the partial so I can have teeth. I am also struggling with spending the $10,000 , or more it will cost, at my age. I am almost 75. I am trying to decide if I will have enough years left to justify the expense. Any thoughts will be welcomed. I will have to have a sinus lift, with bone grafts, that’s surgery #1. Then after six months, the implants will be inserted, surgery #2. Then after everything heals, the implants will be uncovered , and the caps/teeth will be set. Surgery #3. It will take a year. I do,love the inplants I already have. It’s a decision not to be taken lightly.

(Melanie here) Someone commenting on your legs being "too skinny" makes me so upset. Who is this mystery person who determined the size of your legs? Is there a body police out there - for women only, of course! That is so sexist. No-one would ever tell a man that he shouldn't wear shorts because his legs were too skinny. Sometimes, I think all these rules are to make women always feel self-conscious and negative about their bodies. Whether it's a comment from a male or another female, it is amazing that in this day and age that with the gains women have made in many areas, women are still "never allowed" to feel good about our bodies or appearance. I am thankful for your positive approach, Nada, and am so enjoying being in the Closet Confidence Facebook group.

Nada, you're beautiful and you dress perfectly! I'm not surprised at the comments you're getting. Women can be so insecure and have archaic thinking because they can't wear the things you and I do. I feel amazing at almost 54 and look great in the clothes I choose to wear. I love sleeveless tops and dresses because like you, I don't have an issue with my arms. You're a rock star and I know you won't let ridiculous comments from jealous women make you change. xo

I’m 60 and still wear my hair long, wear shorts and short dresses (maybe not mini’s anymore-only bc I don’t want to worry if I bend over to pick up my dropped items😂. I wear skorts a lot❤. I also go braless bc I finally have more confidence, and my husband and daughter in their 20’s and 30’s say “go for it mom”. I admire woman who enjoy themselves and embrace their looks. And now my new mantra for dressing is “dress my energy not my age”. Love it-I think I have been feeling that way-but now I have a definition and saying for the feeling. Thank you. And as for the nay-sayers-don’t let them project their own issues on to you!❤ keep strong!

So many great points! At 58 I had a style crisis listening to all the rules and noticing the many changes I was experiencing with my post menopausal body. I decided that I would take the time to find my own unique style and go with that. I just do “me”. Interestingly I don’t get comments about not dressing my age anymore. I simply don’t entertain “dressing rules” or people who judge anymore. You did a great job of sharing typical concerns and reframed them beautifully.

Dress your energy is good. I think it is also important to look for the aspects of your body that you like. It is very easy as we age and our bodies change to be very negative and decide there are no "good" parts anymore.

Just discovered your channel from Australia. I'm a huge fan of Trinny Woodhall, I find it really interesting that there is a large divergence between the UK, Australia and I think you said you are in Florida? I've always worn whatever I liked, wherever I wanted. I still do. When I was in a career I wore more classic clothes (a period in my 30s in the 80's). I love Magnolia Pearl (Texas) and clothes which are just different from other people. Trinny wears more "out there" outfits, recycles and upcycles clothes and cleverly mixes high street with designer. My other style icon always would have to be Diane Keaton. I like to adapt things, I buy a lot of things from thrift stores and alter them( and find designer gear there). I haven't worn high heels since my early 30's. I love Birkenstock and Trippen shoes. I make jewellery from recycled vintage jewellery. My current fave jacket is at least 20 years old, but I've replaced the buttons with vintage ones and it's an absolute classic tailored shape that looks great with frayed jeans. I gave away all my "brand" handbags years ago. I haven't done my nails since I was about 32, I'm an artist and a gardener and a manicure doesn't last long. I think avoiding contemporary fast fashion is the best way to keep your wardrobe relevant. For example, Trinny uses clever shoulder pads. I've been enjoying your videos for your different ideas.

Great advise, some of your best content. I do like dress your energy, and be more you. For me at 62: I hate my knees, so I wear pants, I am lazy and usually hot, so hair is short to very short. As a home sewer, I am trying to reconcile the modern looks you cover with the garment sewing patterns available. There are a lot of your don'ts out there: uneven hems, undefined waist, loose fitting, etc. Work in progress ;)

I am so sorry you have had such abusive experiences with people judging what you wear. I can see that this has been painful. I don't know it is a normal part of the territory of your profession. It is not normal discourse among caring friendships. If these comments are not coming from necessary business contacts, and the comments are coming from people claming to be friends, consider replacing those friends. You deserve to be treated with kindness and dignity.
