Andrew Gower is a really wholesome guy and I like his humor and the way he does his quest writing. Even the simpler quests in runescape had a certain charm that you don't see much. I'll definitely support his new endeavor.

As a RuneScape player for 20 years with over 30k hours, i'm definitely going to try this out for the Gower brothers name recognition alone but I do have similar thoughts on the trailer especially examples like 6:24 . It looks like they have a blank default map and they just place some blocks for bitesized little playable areas. If that's the majority of the game it'd be a stark difference from the cohesive world of Gielinor.

@@coryv5679 RuneScape is known for having very regular updates so there's always something to do. There's also a lot of ways to afk skills on second monitor while playing other games. 30k hours over 20 years is 1500 hours a year or about 4 hours a day, mostly frontloaded on the earlier years. Easy to do when you have a comfy and familiar game you grew up with that keeps updating.

@Lonit-be it's notoriously been a problem in osrs. The current devs have been very open about how the og osrs code is noodle code and limits what they can do. Simple example is ingame ticks. 0.6 seconds for 1 tick.

It just looks like normal runescape maps from RS1 RS2 and OSRS. You don't get like a world box it just goes black until you're within draw distance and then fades back to black when you leave draw distance. It does seem like the draw distance is quite low here usually you don't see the black unless you zoom all the way out and look to the edge

What Kira guesses as fog of war is not actually that - they are discrete "rooms" (as Gower calls them). Each "room" is a smallish instance of content which you can move around in, and each is connected to other "rooms" through a fixed set of exits. Here's what he said about it in an interview: Gower: One of the unusual things about our world is we've gone with a room-based system which has the feeling of a lot of RPGs where your characters will be in a room doing a certain encounter, and then you're in another room doing an encounter. The rooms all connect together; it's very easy to move between one and the other. It has various technical advantages as well, because it lets us instance each room the right number of times based on how many players are in it, so we can make sure that no part of the world gets too crowded or too empty. There's a sweet spot of how crowded you want the game to be to feel nice, but too crowded and it feels just overwhelming and totally empty and it just feels a bit dead. Gamesradar: And just to get the right image in my mind, we're talking about a defined room as a chunk of the world. Gower: Right, I use the term as a sort of RPG concept where there might be a section of the map which is outdoors, a river or a glade in the forest or something like that, but we define them as rooms and they're all designed with defined exits. So you can't just walk anywhere you like from one location to another. So you might be in a forest clearing and it's almost like an old-school text adventure, there's an exit to the north and there's an exit to the east. And you can choose which way you want to go next.

@@dolorousjohn5499There will never not be bots, but it is a matter of scale of the problem. The less profitable bots are the less bots there will be. Bots farms are a business. The only real silver bullet to bots that isn't very short lived is hitting them in the wallet. Making it more expensive to set up a bot farm will reduce the problem by at least a magnitude, but probably more. If they can also increase the time a bot has to run before it turns a profit then that also means less bots. Less bots means the limited resources a company is willing to invest in anti-bot stuff will be focused on fewer bots. The less money farms are making the less agile they are and the slower they recover from ban waves. More expense to turn a profit means they have to charge more to sell gold or resources, which means less customers, which means less players getting an advantage through buying resources. But there will never not be bots. It will just reduce the problem. In a very similar way to crime. You can never completely get rid of it, but the difference between a low and high crime area is big.

One of the few subscription models I liked were DCUO they have 3 tiers free premium and legendary, free gives you limited acess, premium is when you make any purchase over £5 and gives you a little more freedom and a few more benefits over being a free player, then legendary was the subscription which gave u acess to everything, but all dlc where able to be bought spereratly and played while "free"

The idea of locking trading to limit bots and scripters make totally sense for F2P worlds, but can still be very harsh especially if you and your friends want to try a new game for free and you can't trade with eachother. There are pros and cons

"Free-to-play MMO with an optional sub" should be rebranded to "Subscription MMO with unlimited free trial." FFXIV already did this quite successfully. (Unlimited as in the trial has no time limit - you can play FFXIV for months without paying a single cent, you're access is just restricted to the base game and some of the oldest expansions. World of Warcraft and Eve online used to have free 14 or 21 day trials, for example.)

One of the reasons they don't rebrand it like that is that it's been done in many different ways. In some games, like Runescape, you can downgrade successfully after the fact and still play more, without the bells and whistles. In others, though, once you pass a certain threshold, your character is ineligible to go back to a free status. The 'free to play with an optional subscription' moniker makes it clear #1 is in effect, while 'unlimited free trial' leans more to #2.

I don't think it's fog of war. Looks like that's the map size. Reason I say this is look at the puzzle piece squares at entrances to the map. 6:15 is a good example. Once you see them you can notice them a lot in other shots. So looks like those are the map sizes, which is a little disappointing, but let's wait and see.

Man I wish this had mounts and a housing system 😞 Before anyone tells me (yoU doNT nEeD a mOuNT) It would be nice for cosmetic value! It don't need to make travel faster. I want this graphical style medieval fantasy on a mount dressed in Medieval gear!! Then a house to deck out and call home. Have friends over or go to other people's houses. Even better would be a Guild house to hang out at! EVEN better would also be a tavern for players to hangout, socialize, do mini games and a music system like Lord of the rings online!! There was another attempt to make old school runescape-like game: Genfanad. They made decent attempt at it with bit deeper combat and crafting system than runescape had but a lot of similar questing and exploring systems. They created the game roughly half way until they saw it being worthless to go on. According to devs they saw the playerbase/interest for their game being too small for it to be profitable (especially since they would had offered most gameplay for free and had optional subscription with very little rewards) so they are going to turn it into mmo-exploring rpg card battle game instead (i assume still mostly free2play - i really hope they don't start to sell p2w card packs). I am not sure i agree with devs views - i think the playerbase is there but there might not had been enough marketing (and they didn't even do steam release yet AND it wasn't full game yet - i feel like the fact that it was still in beta/early access and wasn't marketed had bigger factors than they graphics and gameplay). Lets see if Brighter Shores proves Grenfanad devs wrong. Lets see if the playerbase actually is there.

@@aarons6935 Same. I grinded some of the beta crafting, iirc i was nearly done with bronze and after one more session would had moved to next crafting tier (can't remember if it was iron). I am not big card game fan but i will probably check what their game is about. I think they still use "genfanad" as name and the world and graphics are same or similar. Its just that instead of crafting gear you might craft? cards and instead of tick-based combat its turn based card combat. They seem to try to make it semi-deep and give a lot of freedoms to make your own deck (or decks, i hope there are options to have multiple "loadouts" available you can switch into relatively fast).

Honestly I played this and I didn't go past the tutorial because i thought the gameplay loop and combat was absolute dogshit. Then realizing as you said that they turned it into a boring RPG card battle turn based game and i lost interest entirely. If they had only mimicked or copied the combat of runescape atleast somewhat then maybe it would've gained more interest but the combat just made 0 sense. What is the point of making another runescape copy if you are not going to atleast make the combat similar or with a twist

Yeah runescape 3 going at like 20k players and OSRS going at like 120k players, pretty sad I had a revisit the other week and went to a few spots that used to be busy and they were just dead on a standard server ~1k players.

I believe in Andrew Gower. I've met him personally many times. I was a fairly infamous player of the original OSRS, way back in 2005-2011. He's always been a CEO, lead dev, and passionate community manager. He actually loves creating this game. My biggest question is; will this be targeted towards kids? Because Runescape used to enforce rules based on the PG rating, and being a childrens game, but the only people playing it now are older people that used to play as kids.

I want to play a Runescape game set in the old west. Mining, archery, wood cutting, firemaking, smithing, prayer etc most of the skills are still applicable. Just add some gun slinging and some merchant skill's and your set. I wonder if it would be difficult to make.

I was disappointed their sci-fi game never materialized. I thought it would've been a fun second game to play even if it was still quite similar, sorta how AdventureQuest made their space game too. Having a different stereotypical genre to work with would allow a whole different kind of satirical, British humor in the writing and worldbuilding.

Looks good but i'm quite skeptical. I dont know if anyone will like small maps (if they are indeed small maps). MMO's are about being big and exploring the world and lore, and even albions maps look bigger than than these maps. Also dont want this to be too similar to runescape

im gonna guess that the lack of trading in free to play is largely due to bots rather that RWT, although theyre related, obviously with gower coming from runescape he knows the problems RS faced with botting, such as "suicide" bots, a form of blatantly obvious botting that goes on in f2p worlds, because theres no upfront cost to make the bots they dont care if they get banned, theyll just make a new one. he also probably knows you cant completely remove trading from an mmorpg or that effectively kills the game, once again from experience as they essentially did just that to runescape way back when they were pressured by credit card companies to do something about all the dodgy activities going on. RWT will always exist in an mmorpg but getting rid of the ability for people to create massive botfarms for free at least stops the ingame economy from haemorrhaging, so while the simpler minded may see the lack of trading in f2p as a business model made to shoehorn people into spending money its actually to safeguard the game in the longterm and as kira said, much like with runescape, you should consider the f2p version essentially as an endless demo, if youre expecting a full feature mmorpg experience for free with no p2w then youre delusional
