We are often told that depression is ‘all in the mind’. So why are so many of its symptoms felt in our bodies? Why can depression have such a profound impact on physical as well as mental health - from coronary disease to stroke? In August 2023 Philip Gold, a world-renowned expert on this devastating illness, came to Intelligence Squared to discuss how depression is a stress response gone awry, affecting the whole body and not just the brain.
Drawing on his new book Breaking Through Depression, Gold revealed the latest research on how depression influences every aspect of our health, from the chemical messengers that control appetite to the brain’s structure and functionality. He explained how depression disrupts the 24-hour sleep-wake cycle, interacting with the stress system differently depending on whether someone experiences melancholic or atypical symptoms, thereby giving the fullest picture yet of the disease.

This is Gold. You have given me a face at 52 years old. Atypical depression and misdiagnosed with personality and cyclothymia Now I understand that atypical depression can look like both due to reactivity. I have a very reasonable personality but I have a unique side ❤

I would personally estimate that MOST people will experience significant depression at least once in life. I've treated depression for over 35 years and though I appreciate all the research that went into this work and book, viewers should keep in mind that much is still, unknown, theoretical, and not agreed on by all professionals. Most psychiatrists put most depressed patients on SSRIs, whereas most psychotherapists treat many patients without referring for meds. The DSM is the most complete reference to date, but it is an imperfect, ever changing, human-authored/contrived language. Thanks for the video.

the DSM is garbage and has caused a huge amount of harm and neither the drugs or therapy have much of any evidence for efficacy and mounting evidence of harm.

I keep making a similar point about depression & people call me crazy & .... How do we treat Stress? Everyone would say that you need to "Exercise". It's a way to deal with the physiological issues. I also recommend Fasting, but some people say it can worsen the depression in some cases. * I guess maybe if you are melancholic, but fasting also helps with the sleep pattern.

The only thing I agree with by, Philip Gold, is that depression is stress related. . . This video doesn't have new science, it's just a spun reiteration of the old science. The stresses of life itself coupled with real or perceived hopelessness is what causes depression. Depression is not caused by the individual with depression -- that's absurd. It's caused by external stressors that lead to hopelessness. Hopelessness can and will manifest a host of other problems like: anxiety, eating disorders, despondency, reclusive behavior(isolation), etcetera . . . Also, almost every animal is predisposed to depression. It a physiological response to hopelessness and/or being trapped.

Just some new drugs for depression. I've just skimmed through his book. Ketamine, psychedelics, like mdma, lsd, mushrooms, some new antidepressants, anti inflamatory medicine.

Fascinating thank you both. Can Melancholic Depression result in Gender Identity issues or can unresolved Gender Identity issues result in triggering a Melancholic Depression episode? Or can it be either?

Students will say, what is counsel's given with Thy Lives and came with sincere conversations =? Indeed students will say many foolish conversations = likewise we can learn from the past. How else can ye know? Is like what is a miracle? From nothing made to be something. Nor why there's something rather than nothing? Students will say many calls Good Evil and Evil Good! Keep watch! Ascending and descending. Students, Hosts, and our Beautiful many will say WHO AM I? Remind and comes with comfort. Remember Who has to be given the "i" with the "AM". WHY? Liken unto a Child. A Child will be given...what? Where does increase belongs? Is the increase for the OLD! Many old will say needs not corrections nor increase. Offended to remind even Old minds are a Child. As ye say! Keep watch! The CHILD will say come unto all the old. Let the child take the burden ye are carrying! Now is alot lighter. Rest comes...according to thy conversations. With WHO shared the "i" with the "AM". To thyself and unto one another. Sincere or foolish conversations = same measure will be given. My pop Phillip at least I can do is to washed thy FEET to let ye know? From being born to crawling to walking till now thy feet resting upon the very tip of time. The Mileage from thy feet is recognize! If tears is evident. I will wiped without shame but with boldness! Love you Pop. Likewise my Beautiful keep the sincere conversations going. To remind. With clarity, coherence, adequacy, evidence, and witnesses. What is depression? Set UNDERFOOT! But to remind written within our own. From counsel's taken away. To bringing back what is taken. Will be given new eyes to see, new ears to HEAR, new feet, new clothes (flesh), and renewed Minds. Given ABLE TO PULL DOWN STRONG HOLDS FROM ALL WORLD VIEWS UPON ALL DRY GROUNDS NOR THE WORLD. Sitting upon the NEW Table made from a hand without blood stains upon HIS hand.
