So, your son is correct that gas and hybrids are the better option and is actually what people want. Every single one of my family members who own electric vehicles are getting rid of them as soon as they can, with only one planning to return to even hybrid, I work for a parts distributor, I am personally seeing customers come in hoping we can help them source batteries, (we can't) because of the waiting list and the cost.

Everything is a "Jeep Killer", the Bronco was to when it started coming out... Once that statement is made, it won't be a Jeep Killer. And all that is said about Jeep(s), this statement, used so often still, goes to show that Jeep is still on top and still the benchmark. Even for the G Wagon that you guys ALWAYS seem to mention in this segment .... That shouldn't ever be. G Wagons sit outside fancy restaurants with 24" wheels and the average person wouldn't buy one. Tax incentives aren’t “jamming electric down your throat”. For me, personally, while these products are still being developed and the economies of scale are still in the process of balancing out, the tax incentive is what made it reasonable to choose between the two. I purchased an F150 Lightning and the tax break put the price between gas and electric neck and neck. I already wanted an EV. The government allocating funds during the transition made it possible. No one is forced to buy an EV, spend your money how you want to.
@davidroberts56006 ай бұрын
I appreciate Roman's perspective on EVs. He's spot on. My partner and I have two EVs for daily driving, charge from our garage of solar, and own a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee for off roading. We're mostly off-roading close to home so we could maybe do an EV. I think most of us agree there aren't enough off road EV options and the range and/or infrastructure aren't there yet. Heck, even if you get there you have to deal with vampire drain when camping. I think it's partly like HD TV adoption. Not many folks were going to buy an HD TV without content and not much content without demand. The government had to motivate industry and it's working. I don't think addressing local pollution and climate change should be political but I recognize it has become so and understand not wanting to go there.

I just drove my Tesla from UT to MI and it was much better driving that distance than the same trip just two years ago. If all stops had been 250s, none of the charging stops would have seemed longer than needed for bathroom and snack breaks. That’s not even the state of the art for charging. I actually think we’re getting pretty close to (expensive) EVs being capable of road trips without much sacrifice and some benefits. We’ll see when we get to off-roading, but road-tripping has gotten much, much better, at least in a Tesla.
@nativeson6085 ай бұрын
What’s your actual range and recharge time?
@anthonymrskipt92525 ай бұрын
@@nativeson608 - I have a Tesla Model S LR. I would say that a realistic range on a road trip might be as long as 300 miles between stops, but there are clearly a lot of variables and most legs were closer to 250 miles. The availability of chargers, particularly in areas where chargers are few and far between, often impacted the stops as much as the car’s ability to go a particular distance. Using 250 chargers, I don’t think we stopped longer than 15min before we had enough range to continue. There were times when chargers were throttled (not the 250s, but sometimes it happened at 150s) and charging times increased substantially. I probably sat at the chargers in Rapid City, SD for 45min when we arrived there and still didn’t get a full charge. On the other hand, when my wife stopped at the same chargers on the return trip, she was able to spend less than 20min and got to 87%. We don’t keep accurate measure of times or efficiency on legs, so this info is just anecdotal. My point was more that the last time we drove our earlier Tesla (Model Y P) on the same roads, the range was clearly much less - an issue in WY when the wind was up) and charging times were longer - often more like my experience in Rapid City than what our typical experience was on this year’s trip. To be clear, I think the improved experience had to do with both the better car and the better chargers. If all stops were 250s - not even the current state of the art - I don’t think the stops would have been an issue at all. Made my optimistic for the future of BEVs.

I believe that the offroad EV could be manageable. The major problem with the EV is they are not aftermarket friendly. How do you install 40" tires and regear a Rivian or cyber truck. Way too many issues with the electronics when installing lifts trimming the wheel wells to fit larger tires. Give the consumer a basic EV with the ability to highly mod the suspension then I think in my opinion it would have a better chance. I would love an R1T with 74weld portals, 37" tires and 600mi of range.
@dvader32636 ай бұрын
No need to re-gear an EV as the torque is 100% from 0 RPM all the way up to maximum RPM and top speed. EV car suspensions are the same as ICE car suspensions. @gferguson885 ай бұрын
@@dvader3263 LOL. you’re forgetting about all the Mall Queens with 37-40” tires. But the cyber truck already doesn’t have that great of range (compare to original prerelease spec, the range extending battery takes up 1/3 the bed at $16k) and putting a lift kit and bigger tires will affect that just like it does on ICE trucks. EVs are okay but should have pushed for hybrid then plug in hybrids, then to EV to help not only people adapt but garages, mechanics, industries, aftermarket, and most of all POWER GRIDS. If they figure out wireless charging on the roads maybe i would get one, but for now I’ll stick with hybrid truck and plug in hybrid car. And my good ole FJ gas 4x4 lol only 33” tires 😢 but does good on minor trails but the SxS does better!

The only competition to a Wrangler would be solid axles, which I would have hoped to see with gas or hybrid.. This is akin to an EV Bronco.

An EV 4x4 should have 4 motors. One on each wheel with an output shaft and direct drive-no axles necessary. One of the few advantages of the electric car.

The IFS convertible-offroader Bronco competes with the convertible-offroader Wrangler. My only gripe with the concept of the new Bronco is that it has coilovers instead of separated coils and shocks. I know that performance is often better with coilovers, but supplemental airbags can't be put inside the coilovers for hauling/towing at max capacity with 0 sag/squat.

Scout needs a gas variant to survive long term and be able to fund development for the EV variant. Otherwise VW would have to keep pouring money into the company. I also want the IH Travelall and Pickup truck eventually too. Heck, bring back the International Harvester name on all vehicles.

First, I'm indifferent as to power source. It should be affordable, sustainable, widely available and provide a quick refuel. We are on a four lane highway with ICE, Hybrid, PHV and BEV. All have their advantages and disadvantages. Today the sweet spot is Hybrid/PHV. We must continue to progress our energy future and we can't do that by sitting still. With that, a PHV Scout would have been ideal.

ICE tech has been developing for what the last 100 years so of course the infrastructure is there to support it but to disparage EV tech which is in its infancy is extremely naive. For the majority of drivers EV’s are more than enough, all these extreme ICE use cases will be addressed by EV tech in the coming years with battery density, solar charging, power storage, charging speed and chemistry always rapidly improving. And to those who say EV’s pollute as much as ICE let’s sit in a garage in our respective cars with the powertrains running overnight and see who makes it out. People get too comfortable because your exhaust is behind you so out of sight out of mind. Put it upfront and see how long you’d drive ICE. I love all cars but realise change is needed and is already here. It’s like when people laughed at the internet and buttonless mobile phones.

Tommy’s wrong on this electric is the future and it would be Insane for scout to spend billions on engineering a new motor when they wouldn’t be able to recoup those costs (billions) due to the switch to electric. They would need a decade or more to recoup that investment. How long before they’re actually selling these scouts. They’re planning for the future not the past.

The battery weight alone would kill any driving dynamics of a "sports" car. You DID pass physics class, riiiggghhhttt?
@jonzaremba6 ай бұрын
@thisismagacountry1318 untrue. Tesla began all this by making sports cars. There are several in China. Even the Honda E performs somewhat sportily. A sports car doesn't need long range. Smaller and lighter batteries are utilized. The inverse, however, is true for offroad vehicles. They need 200-300 miles range at a minimum and weight is a major factor in real off roading. The offroad EVs are all twice as heavy (at least) compared to their gas equivalents.

EV’s make sense if you live in the city. Here in metro Vancouver, Washington/Portland, Oregon. You see electric bicycles, scooters, SUVs, and automobiles everywhere, and I don’t think it’s a bad idea if you’re not going very far outside of the city. However, for those of us that enjoy hiking, fishing and hunting, these are Endeavors that are usually done well outside of the cities reach, and often in places where there is no electricity, which would make an EV prohibitive.

The reason people are so negative about EV's is because they threaten the gasoline engines. If they didn't set a timeline to get rid of gas cars it wouldn't be a problem as long as people have choice

I drove my brother's 1971 Scout in 1974. If no one else is going to state the obvious? The basic outline of a Scout that VW has been touting looks enough like the Rivian R2 to not be an accident. In turn Rivian's styling is far more appealing than any of VW's. Finally, despite careful wording by Rivian's PR people? Rivian was going out of business. They have lost $15B+ in the last 3 years. Ask Musk, it is brutal starting a car company and Rivian is no different, when Ford walked away I assumed they were toast...but here they are, I hope they make it.

I own a 1975 Scout II. I am looking at the Rivian R1S to replace my daily driver Subaru. I have not ordered a new vehicle in anticipation of the information coming from Scout this summer. The new Scout EV would give me interesting option for local trails when I don’t want to take the classic. Can any of us say that our non-buggy 4x4 SUVs/Trucks are used more on trails than on pavement? How often are we going on off-road trips that exceed 250-300 miles. If either of those are you, then perhaps the new Scout isn’t for you. Honestly, my Scout II’s modified 392ci gets 7MPG, limiting my 33 gallon tank to 231 miles. A R1S Tri Motor with a 400+ mile range might actually be the better option for some trails.

Refreshing to see differing perspectives and two different sides discussed, thank you. I dig the electric vehicle positives for sure, but I’m still highly skeptical for off road use. It would need huge range to work for me and my trips…and even then I’m guessing it would still be less convenient for me because of the time needed to recharge. Something more like the Ramcharger setup would make sense in my mind. Or just give me a V8. I’d be fine with that too. 😂
