We're back with the most anticipated comparison in recent history: Taylor's new Grand Theater body style goes up against the widely acclaimed Taylor GS Mini. If you're a huge fan of the GS Mini like we are, you'll be super excited to see that Taylor has released a beautiful new shorter-scale, C-Class braced, all solid wood, American made guitar that is just a touch larger than the GS Mini. Take a listen to Cooper Greenberg playing on both of these great guitars and tell us what kind of differences you hear, which you prefer, and what kind of wood or finish combinations you might want to see on the GT moving forward!

I just bought the GT and its the acoustic guitar I was looking for. The ergonomics made it perfect for me and stuff like shoulder impingement and carpal tunnel issues didn't flair up while playing. The nut width, the string spacing and the body size and the all solid wood and the electronics and the bag, it was worth the price.

I've played the GT in store and am a long time owner of a Mini. While I find the GT has a bit more bass and volume due to it's larger body, I don't feel at three times the price of a Mini it's three times better in sound or playability. Absolutely love my Mini, and if a person wants to move up in size I'd lean toward a full body and skip the "in between."

Wow, my 2 main interests in this video (1) you both holding the guitars side by side for a size visual comparison and (2) switching back and fourth between both guitars during Coopers playing. Honestly in this video I felt there is minimal difference. I'm a huge Taylor fan and have always thought the GS-Mini stood alone against all other competition, so the thought of the all solid GT got me super excited, however Taylor was able to make the GS-Mini layered sides/back sound as good as many all solid guitars. I commented on your first video thinking the GT may compete too much with the GS-Mini, but honestly I dont think so based on this video. I'll need to test one in person to confirm. That doesnt mean I will never get a GT, but it means my GS-Mini(s) remain absolute best bang for the buck when it comes to build, feel, and sound (short of my McPherson CF Touring)! Cant wait to watch all the other comparison videos that will surely flood KZbin soon.

As many have stated before me, the way Cooper is playing, it makes it difficult to hear the difference. However, one thing that surprised me was the fact that the Mini can truly hold its own. I have a Mini and I would like to tell those who've never played one; when people infer that the Mini is a guitar for small people, it's not really true. It's for small, medium, and large people alike. I have fairly large hands and I have no problem negotiating the fretboard.

While Cooper's playing is virtuosic, there is too much going on with the fingers and the style including a lot of string muting. This does not really show the depth/fullness of tone of either guitar. It just shows lots of notes - very few of which are sustained. I'd like to hear both guitars played by Chris using the tunes he regularly plays to demonstrate acoustic guitars.

Juan, not too good. Just too many notes too fast to demonstrate the tonal characteristics and differences between the two instruments. There is a huge difference between playing a flurry of notes at a fast tempo and playing slow, tasty, melodic passages played with feeling. If you want to demo the tone of an instrument, the latter style of playing is best.

I have to agree with the comments that Cooper's playing, while certainly impressive, (Ok. Mind blowing) makes it hard to hear the differences between the two guitars. It will be interesting to see how the GT sells. If it were my money, it would be the American Dream series just for the scale length. Pit the GT against the AD. That's the comparison I'd love to hear. No doubt the GSM is a little gem, though.

I fully agree, Cooper has an amazing ability to play, but that isn't the purpose of the video. His choices in what to play did not allow either guitar to shine, unless of course you are buying a guitar for percussive slaps and finger picking. Could we have some 6 string chords, and not so fast on the changes please? Let the guitars ring out some.

Honestly, this review was not very helpful. The style he was playing probably accounts for less than 5% of the players that will pick up either one of those guitars. Let the instrument ring! Let the wood resonate! His skills are amazing, but the guitar is supposed to be on display, not his licks.

Seems like GT is an amazing guitar. Also nice to see how cool a GS Mini can be in Cooper's hands. I bought a GS Mini as my first guitar about a month ago and still absolutely love it. I remember playing different instruments in a shop and when I picked up GS Mini and strummed the first chord (yes, I already new some tricks) I was just blown away. I immediately thought to myself: "Wow, this it it!". Now I know much more about guitars, but I still want that feeling of instrument speaking to me if I ever buy a new one. Maybe it's going to be a GT, who knows.

In my opinion Koa Plus > GT. I just got back from trying these at the store. The Koa Plus sounds incredible: the bass tone is full and warm, warmer than the GT, The Koa plus sounds like a full sized guitar to me, but it does seem to lack overtones and sustain compared to the GT or a full size (was hard to discern as well over the faint air/humidifier noise), although I would actually prefer this since my maple 614e has tons of overtones and sometimes I want them to shut up lol - just depends on the song/style. I could also feel the K+ resonate against my body. The K+ defied expectations, while the GT sounded like what you'd expect from a slightly smaller than full sized guitar. Another difference (although this could change with action / string choice) was the GT was slightly slinkier (easier to bend) than the mini because by defualt the string tension is less. But the K+ I played also felt like the action was a little too high. One thing I liked better about the GT was that it was easier to find the sweet spot in tone/volume when resting my wrist on the strings for a semi palm muted sound when flat picking. On the K+ I found it easy to have too much palm resting on the strings and dampening the sound too much, but maybe with practice this would be overcome; on the positive side, since the K+ is more punchy and has less sustain anyways, even if I erred on less palm I could still get a percussive sound that didn't bleed. To my ears the K+ definitely sounds better than the other mini varients. I don't know the specs as to what's different, but its night and day difference to me - the bass tone on the K+ is amazing. I don't mean that it's overpowering - the EQ across strings was just right. Harder to say for the GT since I found it's bass to be brighter. I didn't try the GT plugged in. The K+ plugged in sounded fine, nothing to write home about - the higher the volume the more of that metalic zing there is with basically all amped acoustics. Not sure how it compared to the regular minis plugged in.

I'm seriously interested. I've been hoping Taylor would come out with something more analogous to the AD series but in something closer to a Grand Concert body size. The GT might be just the ticket. I also love the fact that they're using a nontraditional wood for the back and sides, apparently to great effect. I'd be interested to know whether this body style would work well in maple, too.

Definitely a good move by Taylor, the GT sounds great and seems to fill a niche in the market; the two guitars are different enough that the new model won't affect sales of the GS Mini or make it obsolete by any means. Listening to the two side by side, it's amazing how full the GS Mini still sounds considering its size. As always, thanks for a great presentation and comparison. I do not own the GS mini and was going to get one but now I am more interested in the GT. I also don’t want be be to comfy with a shorter scale since I am still learning and I like the idea of the “in the middle” 24 + inch scale length. My suggestion would be a GT in sunburst and possibly a cut away but I know that could take away from the sound, can’t have everything… 😆 Thank you for the great reviews!

It feels like it’s just big enough to be seen as a guitar that’s not only made for travelling and for younger people. Also, as in this comparison I felt like the GT had a bit more depth in tone. I brought it home and after a day or two decided that I could not live with a guitar that had a somewhat anemic bass (my opinion only - don't want to offend anyone). I brought it back to Guitar Center and compared it to the GTe Urban Ash, which I liked much better. I paid the difference for the upgrade. BTW the gig bag for the GT is a huge improvement as well. Been playing the GT, unelectrified, daily for about a month now and am very happy with the sound and playability.

From the photos I’ve seen, it appears that the back and sides have an open pore finish, like the most recent Martin nylon string guitar from a few years ago. While I’ve heard that the open pore is supposed to help improve the sound, I think it cheapens the appearance. That being said, I’m one of those who requested a solid wood GS Mini, even though I’ve never owned a GS Mini. So, if I liked everything else about the GT, I would likely overlook the finish. I have two very nice Taylor 12 fret guitars, one steel and one nylon, so I’m not in the immediate market for the GT, but with aging hands, I may be in a couple years when Taylor will certainly have newer versions with upgraded appointments. Thanks for the outstanding comparison of the two guitars!

saw an interview with Andy Powers where the issue of building an all wood GS mini came up. he said for the increase in cost there is no discernable tone difference. He has made an all wood model and what they have down with the current build they have tweeked the tone about as good as it can get and solid wood will not help it mostly because of size. he said it came down to going just a bit larger. From what I hear the sound is very noticeable and much more large guitar sounding and mature. The playability is improved with a lighter touch and feel. the new finish with these and the American Dream is a very thin satin. No fillers are used so that is why the pours look open. While gloss finishes are nice many instruments I have played with very little finish or even varnish sounded way better . I have the last of the X braced 814CE that Andy Redesigned and am really looking at this as a back up and practice guitar or even more. Will play and feel much more like my PRS McCarty 594 singlecut.

I can hear very little difference. But given this is an all solid, tone will get better for sure. However, if the price is much higher, then I would still go Gs mini.

Great video, thank you. I pre-ordered the GT from my local independent music store. I used to have a GS Mini, but I upgraded the tuners to full size Taylor, bone saddle, and the plastic pins for ebony. My GS Mini sounded good, but it was lacking something, granted I have other guitars of greater caliber.

Bought a guitar from Alamo a few months ago. One of you sales reps said the Taylor rep said the GS mini has a larger sound hole than their other guitars. If so, does that also apply to the new Grand Theater? Kudos on presentation and playing. Thanks.

I wish in demos young guitarist would not so much Flex their licks but show more sustain and let the strings be heard for the average guitar player who would be buying these lower model ones. If I would want to hear speed, lets have Al Dimeola demonstrate his lighting licks. Have a little more James taylor or Dan Fogelberg play and more travis pick on these badboys. There was a smoother glide over the Mini on the guitarmans licks.

Hey, I've been meaning to buy a new guitar and I really like the GT's body size because it's small enough that it's comfy but big enough that I has some depth and loudness Do you know any other 7/8 steel string guitars with good quality that would be under $600? I can only find classical ones. Thanks!

I see several negative comments referencing Cooper's playing style not being the best for demonstrating a guitar's qualities . I felt that initialy but then just sat back and thoroughly enjoyed his very unique style . I'll be watching this again .

JUST FOR RHE RECORD, anybody that plays a Taylor GS Mini knows just HOW INCREDIBLE it sounds. I wonder why Taylor sold a jillion of them??? Maybe because they are phenomenal. Baby Taylor, GS mini, Big Baby Taylor, Academy Series and now a GT?? It sounds like they’re getting a little carried away.

My bank account likes the GS Mini and I loved it when I was looking for a small bodied guitar but it was over my price range at the time (hated the sound of the Baby Taylor and ended up with a Little Martin). Now I’m looking for a step up. This video was helpful and makes me lean toward the GT but then again, for the price should I just go with an American Dream? I also have a 1980 Yamaha dreadnought that I love the sound of but the neck lacks the playability of Taylor and Martin.

If volume was the priority with the invention of the new bracing wouldn't it make sense to offer a GT guitar with a cedar top? As far as I know, cedar tops are said to be a bit louder and mellower than spruce. Judging from the 2 videos the GT you showed seems to be a bit more on the brighter side of the spectrum, so cedar/mahogany might give this guitar a very different sound.

There is no question the guitar playing was phenomenal. But the problem is it doesn’t really showcase the guitar for the average player. You need to make the demo more accessible by doing some simple fingerpicking and strumming techniques. Also, the assertion that the GS-mini is not a “serious” guitar is absurd, I’ve been playing and recording for over 40 years and I can tell you it sounds just fine in the studio in the right hands. Honestly, I certainly didn’t hear enough of a difference between the two (likely because of the style of the demo) to justify the additional cost and make me want to add one to my collection. Better luck next time guys.

I would have liked hear some strumming. Will have to revisit video with headphones, the Mini actually had more punch to me. I don't travel, need a pandemic rocking' recording singer-songwriter guitar- does rthe GT come as a lefty and how does it compare to a Martin or Gibson in that price range. Yes, I like a big, even, butbassy as well as bright sound.

The GT is more focused, the GS Mini is more lively. Tonally, the GS Mini is a bit brighter, the GT a bit fuller. I think it comes down to which sound and feel anyone prefers. Parlor guitars are great to just have hanging around.

Cooper has mastery over a number of key guitar techniques that if he chose to he could play a box guitar and make it sound like the star of the show. The winner is actually Cooper in this comparison as he can make any beat guitar sound great as he able to project his ability through anything with strings and a soundboard making it sound excellent. They say that its 2./3 the guitar player and 1/3 the guitar at his level.

Contrary to much opinion here , I thought Coopers playing was spot on to showcase the differences, they aren't small. Dynamically the GT just hangs with whatever you throw at at, the Mini flattens or compresses out, lacking subtlety . Depth, clarity and fullness of tone are all dramatically improved, to my ears. The GT sounds warm and well balanced. I started buying Taylors back in the 80's ( more than a few over the years) and have been hoping for something just like this as I prefer smaller body guitars, 00 size being my all time favorite.

Cooper’s playing is terrific, but I would have much rather heard an A/B of some “normal” songs with a lot less going on to hear the differences in these 2 guitars. The staccato finger style and super quick changes made the focus be in the playing and not the guitar.

Beg to differ, the greatest travel guitar of all is the Furch LJ10. I have both, the mini GS and the Little Jane and even with being both, smaller and foldable, the LJ supersedes the mini GS in playability and sound, especially when recorded. 👌
