I was lucky enough to have run the R110A. That train, when it worked right, was smooth as silk. The one issue you didn't mention was that, no matter how far the train was geared down, it could hit 80 mph and higher. Yes, I did hit 80 mph on the Lexington Avenue line while in test service. Going from Bowling Green to Borough Hall, I hit 85 mph. It had Westinghouse propulsion, btw.

I remember when they debuted at the Transit Museum in November 1992 and being fascinated by how futuristic it looked. They showed it off at various locations in the subway the Winter of 92-93 & then when I heard of them running in service, i made it my mission to ride them and eventually i did. I rode the R110A once in 1994 & the R110B twice in 1994 & 1995. They were very smooth cars. I preferred the R110B. The R110A was very tight when crowded. I heard people complaining on that 2 Train cursing about how uncomfortable it was. Fast forward to 2000 & we get the results of those trains with the R142/142A’s. Great video!

I used to ride the R110A from Wakefield-241st Street to 149th Street-Grand Concourse back when they first came out in 1993, I was only 7 when they were first introduced to the MTA. So I ridden the Manhattan bound R110A 2 train following the White Plains Road line and got off at 149th Street-Grand Concourse. 7 years later I rode the first ever R142 2 train from Wakefield-241st Street to Grand Central-42nd Street and it was rerouted onto the Lexington Avenue line because of construction between 135th Street and Clark Street so 3 trains only ran between Harlem-148th Street and 145th Street as a shuttle so they were completely suspended between 145th Street and Clark Street so they couldn’t get into Brooklyn at all and into Lower Manhattan via Lennox Avenue and 7th Avenue. In the summer of 2000 I took a borrowed 2 train from Grand Central-42nd Street to 161st Street-Yankee Stadium for the very first ever Subway Series of all time of the Yankees vs the Mets. The borrowed 2 train was an R142 train and was painted white with Yankee blue pinstripes and saying Subway Series 2000 with the Yankees and Mets logos and the ends of the train and on the cars. Later on in 2000 I took an R142A 6 train from Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall to 125th Street and transferred at 125th Street to an uptown 2 train taking me up to Wakefield-241st Street as it again was running on the Lexington Avenue line until further notice which would be once the construction on the 7th Avenue line was finished. In August of 2002 I took the first ever R142 4 train from Grand Central-42nd Street to Mosholu Parkway and Woodlawn. In the later days of 2002 I took the first ever R142A 4 train from Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall to Woodlawn. Then in 2005 I took an R142 5 train from Bowling Green to Eastchester-Dyre Avenue. On September 21st 2008 I took the last run on the 4 train from Woodlawn to 161st Street-Yankee Stadium on the last ever game day at the old Yankee Stadium and watched all the legendary players and alumni players get called and them run onto the field for old time sake, I then watched the actual game be played for the very last time at the old Yankee Stadium. Later on that night I watched the very last celebration at the old Yankee Stadium. At midnight on September 22nd 2008 just several minutes after leaving the old Yankee Stadium for the very last time I took the very last 4 train from 161st Street-Yankee Stadium to Woodlawn and began to get emotional because I was never gonna see the Yankees play there again. On opening day at the new Yankee Stadium I took the very first Metro North train ride from Crestwood to the brand new Yankees-East 153rd Street station and watched the very first ever game at the new Yankee Stadium, I started to say to myself that it wasn’t the same being at this Yankee Stadium because it’s just a replacement to the old one and we will never see 85 years of history be made from 1923-2008 again, we now see modern day history be made not classic history be made. In 2012 when Rich “Goose” Gossage came to The Bronx once again and was on the field of the current Yankee Stadium, he signed autographs on all the merchandise including his jerseys that were fan made and he was very disappointed that they got rid of the old Yankee Stadium where he did his best games ever. Also Rich “Goose” Gossage was number 54. In 2014 I took the 4 train from Mosholu Parkway to 149th Street-Grand Concourse and walked down to Exterior Street, across the Yankees-East 153rd Street overpass near between the stairwell to the street and the mezzanine and right to the stadium itself, it was Derek Jeter’s final game and I took my seat in section 203 aka the bleachers nicknamed the Bleacher Creatures. I’ve done the same things for many years since 1990 but did them the most since 1993.

But the R130 would be a staple of the IRT for new Tech trains of the milenium and soon the R262/A. As a retired motorman 'B' division i can attest to you're review of the R44s (well done by the way) To many here it might come as a surprise the R44s were my personal favorite to operate (the other R38/32) as it was a challenge to brake into a station especially a express station at high speed like Nostrand ave or Utica ave on the A line where the rule of thumb was once the braking sequence started into a station, you held brake pressure right into the >10< car marker in the station ! If you released brake pressure and applied brake pressure again the compressors were not fast enough to supply brake pressure which usually meant you slid past the >10< marker by several feet pissing off the conductor because he or she was past the board LoL......

The R110b are 67 ft cars drawn back to the BMT standards in triplets. The reason is that the 75 ft cars could not fit into the premises of the lines under the BMT eastern division which is what the J,M,Z and the L use. So they use this triplets configuration to try to have it fit in the entire B division dispite the constraints in the system. A single triplet unit can measure 201 ft with each car length in 67 ft supposing the length of the Franklin shuttle, but two triplets length a total of 402 ft, 78 ft shorter of a typical 8 car train when technically, it takes 7 cars to be roughly equivalent to a 8 car 60 ft train and all three triplets length a full set in which I don't know where the conductor would position in either the 4th car or connect the 7th car so there are some issues. So transit went with a better option to have all technology train assemble into 2 semi units much like the r110a adapt the second electronic strip map from r110b and incorporate the rest of the features onto the r142 and 143 while the r160 was upgraded with new features and adapted two modifications of semi units to fit in the entire B division

They actually ran trains with staggered doors in service? I remember reading that this layout would be better, but didn't know it had been tried in operation! Did it work as hoped for? As far as I know no subway has cars with staggered doors at present, so I guess the benefits don't seem to be worth the added difficulty of construction?

All of the NTT A-Division subway cars have staggered doors. Also, to my knowledge, there isn't any difficulty in making it that way.

They plan to make the doors wider! It would make boarding and detraing easier and quicker.

Are you joking? The NTTs are not complex and also work well, considering that these cars comprise a substantial portion of the whole fleet. Do note that the R32 cars are staying around, but will not be carrying any passengers.
