America and Harley Davidson had it all over the Europeans at this time. A friend had rebuilt, not restored, a J model and chair and the silly bugger gave me the honour of being the only person he trusted to take him for a ride in the chair. It was my first experience on a foot clutch/ hand shift up to the Faraday Springs where we collected some of the gently fizzy water. You can always tell how you did on the return journey when you're riding someone else's pride and joy. I rode back as proud as punch and I've wanted but never owned a UL ever since. To quote our most famous bushranger, "Such is life".

There were a LOT of 61 inch HD in the W Va panhandle ex police models and that displacement was used in export bikes like Belgium police models. Seems like engine numbers starting with EL were liter bikes, at least for knuckleheads and panheads. We used to use 80 cuin flathead flywheels on 1937 thru 1953 models but the 1954 change to tapered roller bearings on the crank drive end couldn't use flathead cranks. We had some EL bikes up to about 1962 when outside top end oil lines were introduced and never saw an EL past 1962. WE have been to your museum and really enjoyed it.

Since the valve lash on the intake and exhaust valves was off quite a bit, does that indicate that the seats have been pounded down?
@dukecraig2402
@dukecraig2402 3 жыл бұрын
No, that would actually tighten everything up, think about it, if the valve sunk deeper it would raise up the end of the rocker that pushes on the valve stem and rotate the other end of the rocker down, tightening it up at the tappet.

I do not know much about the engine`s but the adjustment for valve lash was excessive on this one .I would wonder about the cam wear and cam bushings . Top all that off with excessive oil burning that old bike was beat up bad. The import cars had the same lash caps into the 70`s .

Hope these aren't worth much, I just cut one up and made a go-cart with the motor and scrapped the rest of it, looked exactly the same but the tires were black and both were flat. I thought someone built it as a joke. Got it from a house clean-out, it was in the garage with a tarp over it and boxes stacked on top of it. I did keep the headlight for my fishing boat but it fell in the water the other night while fishing when I got a hit on my line.
