The wars were started by the Stuarts in order to reclaim the throne of England from King William of Orange. The Stuarts were Catholic, which is why they were ousted, and many Scots, who were ruled by England at the time, wanted a Catholic king (my clan was not one of them). It was a British civil war because it was fought over the British crown in British controlled areas (Ireland, Scotland, and Great Britain).

I'm not a Monarchist, so I couldn't honestly call myself a Jacobite, but this song's certainly rousing, although a wee bit sad at the same time, when you think of how it all ended.

I've heard Silly Wizard sing this as "Wha'll Be King But Cherlie". I must say, they speed it up, and it's quite a bit more rousing.

Theirs is the best version stylistically but they changed some of the traditional words, as is their habit, which I'd rather they not do but I understand how it helps young'ns understand.

Every historian states that the Jacobite rebellion was in fact a British civil war, Scotland, England and Wales shared one monarch, court and parliament so therefore they were one country so on point A you are laughably wrong. B simply because the rebellion began in Scotland does not show anything there were Scottish, English and Welsh Jacobite's, and Scottish, English and Welsh government troops and as I stated Scotland England and Wales are one country so therefore it was a civil war...

The Riel Rebellion-1885/86..............French Metis,(half breeds), joined in,(along with the Cree's), but Scots half breeds did not. By that time everyone Scottish here was Presbetyrian and had forgotten the old struggles. So they sided with the London ruled Canadian government. To be honest, I'm happy they stayed out of that mess. 120 people got killed.

This seems a bit circular. You want to stress that Scots fought for the Stuarts. I want to stress that Scots fought for the House of Hanover...which brings us back to square one. As I see it, they were two branches of the same family playing politics and exploiting their subjects' tribal loyalties, rivalries and enmities. You can't see the point I'm making, but I can't see the point you're making, which is probably how civil wars begin. :-)

If I may take the liberty of adjudicating here, I'd support McTrollie on this one. It was not only a civil war within the framework of the British state, but considering that Scots fought on both sides (more against Charlie than for him), it was also a civil war within the framework of Scottish society.
