Great reco's! I've had 13th Colony on my radar since you did the video of the Double Oak a while back. And I recently picked up a bottle of Found North 17-year Batch 6 after I watched your side-by-side with batch 5. I've only had one pour - but you're right. It is a flavor bomb! Definitely glad I picked it up even at $140. Can't wait to have another pour and share it with some friends.

First off, as an Ohio native and an Ohio State grad, love that you’re in CBUS. As a resident of the Gulf Coast for many years, great seeing 2 Gulf Coast based brands on this list. K.Luke from the Maisano family from Ocean Springs Mississippi is excellent. Dettling out of Atmore Alabama is producing some great bourbon, especially the cask strength single barrel. Would also like to know your thoughts on your 1915 blend behind you.

Spot On on your Driftless Glen review Jason. Will have to drive up from Florida to get more, but well worth it. Interesting side note, Sand County, Wisconsin was the home to Aldo Leopold ("Sand County Almanac") and John Muir ("father of our National Park system". two of our nation's most influential conservationists/environmentalists. I'm told they are up only 13 miles apart. Must be something in the Wisconsin water!

I'll never understand why some people look down on sourced bourbon. Here's the deal... most bourbon is pretty similar when it goes into a barrel. Sure, the fermentation and mash bill can vary but many stick to pretty safe mash bills. Koval is one of the few who really just do whatever with their mash bill. Since most distillers color within the lines when creating their distillate that means your biggest influences are going to be barrel, aging/climate conditions, and finishing. MGP has a good base distillate and that gives a good spirits company plenty of space to create a unique whiskey. Sourcing is also a great way to get age stated whiskey on the cheap - you can buy time from someone else but you can't create time without actually waiting. It is very expensive to start from 0 and get to 10 year old barrels as a new venture... you know because you have to survive 10 years selling something (probably Gin and Vodka). All those bottles of non-whiskey you are making don't help you make better whiskey or build a whiskey following - It just allows you to generate income while you wait... and wait... and wait... and pray nothing happens to you barrels... and wait. TLDR: Sourced whiskey is perfectly fine if you are actually doing something with the sourced whiskey beyond just throwing it in a bottle with a label. Some of the better value whiskey you can buy is sourced because it's far cheaper to buy an aged barrel than it is to start from zero and build the inventory and infrastructure to create a good bottle. A smart company will do both - see New Riff.
@jonwatkins77 Жыл бұрын
I dont have an issue with sourced bourbon per se. I have an issue with these NDP purchasing barrels, finishing it with the new flavor of the week barrel, slapping some BS marketing story on it, and then charging $70 for a 3-4 year aged product. There are hundreds of bottles out there that fit this premise. I completely understand the rationale or why of it all but as a consumer it muddies the water IMO, even more so if there is no value added to it. Another point which you didnt call out is that sourced barrels are incredibly subjective. The product can have a different taste profile year to year if the same age, placement, and mix of the barrels isn't replicated. Looking at you Willet. None of their own distillate products have the same age or taste profile as when they sourced barrels, but they have the same label.

I can’t buy them all….. I stay away from most NDP, it’s just marked up and somebody else’s art or….. many brands we could insert here…. Adulterated and or flavored…. Pass

This is a great list. I've tried several these just trying to expand to lesser known distilleries. The best of these that I've tried is driftless glen. I had heard good things and while in Wisconsin for work I made it a point to check out the distillery. It was a small but really enjoyable tour. I enjoyed it enough that I figured I would buy a bottle just to add to my shelf. After the tour there was the quintessential tasting. I loved their offerings so much that I ended up walking out with four bottles! I can honestly say that this bourbon (and rye surprisingly) is worth the hunt. I'm currently drinking out of one of their glen Carens that I bought as well as a souvenir because I enjoyed the experience so much. If you can find driftless glen in your area, it is definitely worth a try. Great video and recommendations!

Middle West has some pretty nice whiskeys. Their Ported Pumpernickel Rye in particular is a great winter whiskey. Their flagship Wheated bourbon is a solid pour as well. For a budget pour, American Distilling Co. Bourbon is a liter bottle for under $20 that is fantastic for its price point. There’s so much flavor for an 80pf crusher that I’m actually suspicious they secretly use caramel or toffee flavoring on the down low.

Watched this excellent vid when first released & was reminded recently about Buzzards Roost. I`ve heard they do a peated rye which I think is a terrific idea. While I`ve got no chance in trying it myself I wondered if you`d had the opportunity to try it? I know you enjoy peat & I`d like to have got your opinion as to whether peat & rye work together or not. I`ve seen a few reviews which suggest it`s very lightly peated which for me sounds sensible as you don`t want to crowd the spice notes. Perhaps if you haven`t tried it you might consider reviewing a sample?Btw, isn`t that Ben Holladay soft red wheat label incredibly distinctive?!

Hey Jason, great show topic. Let me throw my local distillery Laws Whiskey House into the ring. Grain to glass, truly craft whiskey, with all the transparency. Their bonded bourbon is up 8 years old now (up every year) and the bonded rye is at 7 years I think. They do “experiential barrels” aka finished products, I’ve tried most and they’re all phenomenal! The guys on Whiskey Vault love their products, I’d be interested to hear your review.

Great review Jason. While I feel the legacy distillers make the best bourbon & ryes and always will, it’s nice to recognize some good craft distillers or sourcers. One I like that unfortunately is only available in CA is Corbin Cash. They’re a 100-year old working farm who do grain to glass distilling on the side. Their Barrel Proof Merced Rye is good.
