I've been having debates about traditional Kung Fu and it's effectiveness. Essentially, my position is that a Kung Fu style is about it's core approach to balance, transitions, and power. These are the core Daoist styles of Tai Chi=balance, Bagua=transitions, Hsing Yi=power. (Of course there's overlap, but I'm looking at the fundamental, first principle of each style). I like applying this to boxing because it limits the "tools" enough to see each of the styles in the focus of the performance of the athletes. For example, in the great Foreman, Ali, Frasier battles I see each style represented: Foreman=Tai Chi, stay on balance and put the opponent of balance "silk reeling" and fire Canon punches. Ali=Bagua, continuous transitions making the opponent imbalance himself and "fall" into the strikes as he "walks the circle". Frazier=Hsing Yi, straight charging and pressure using the "5 elements" power generation. Another way of saying this is that I'm in real time how these styles were developed and how they should be used, and were used before they became commercial rather than combative and competitive. I remember one discussion about Ali I had with someone who practiced Bagua who told me what Ali does is nothing like Bagua and I said "Ali circles, switches directions and palms his opponents to set up shots, how is that not Bagua?".

The ring IQ really does seem off the charts, and he swings with the tremendous power needed to force opponents to respect you enough to make that pressure work. Hey I saw his first fight and one a while ago and came away with mixed feelings. I love seeing young talent. My only issue is how much are damage are you willing to take before you even reach your prime? I would love to see him develop crisp boxing and fast hands. Almost every one of his punches involve the full kinetic chain with no fakes or feints. I don’t even think he has to change his aggressive style to adopt a much safer and equally exciting style.

His first fight was over in 15 seconds, I don't think he took that much damage lol Pressure fighters will get hit, but I think his counters and the other defense I highlighted is enough to carry him through. He will keep improving, he just needs to move up at a good speed and he's capable of great things. If he gets a loss then he has all the time in the world to make adjustments.

There is also a trade off in being too much of a “safe” fighter. If you never sit down on your punches and fight in the pocket and have no ability to end a fight, you’re in combat for a longer duration. Which may or may not lead to more damage overall (say I’m on the back foot the whole fight and start gassing in the later rounds). It’s really a balancing act of having killer instinct while also not getting slept while trading blows

An example is volkanavski vs Topuria. Backing up the entire fight volkanavski could hit without getting hit but at the same time he couldn’t land any meaningful enough shots to get the respect of Topuria until Topuria made all the reads to land the finishing combinations

@@ctestare2625 This is actually a great point. In a fight as in life, being too safe can eventually become dangerous. People point to Mayweather as too safe a fighter but the first 3 rounds or so of each fight he was taking insane risks. One he had the opponent figured out only then would he limit his risks and punish them over time, and he had the stamina to do that. If he had just started out that safe his opponents would have had a lot more chances to pressure without any consequences. Either way, JoJo is a prodigy on his way up right now. So I'm way more impressed with how much he's doing right. And I'm sure his coaches will correct anything that needs correcting.

I’m a boxing guy. I love this stuff and I’m definitely getting more into it. Just a question if someone could answer- are the “knockdowns” scored? Like is boxing a knockdown makes it a 10-8 round (with 1 knockdown). Do these count differently if it’s a sweep or a punch or a kick? Thank you. These guys are unbelievable. Like made of steal, lol.

Yes in Muay Thai but only if the rest of the round was also one sided. MMA you’d probably need more than one knockdown.

I'm glad you're getting more into Muay Thai! An easy way to think of it is how solid the strike landed to force them down vs if their opponent just did something to disrupt their balance. So a lot of the time a leg kick doesn't count as a knockdown because the person was up on one leg so of course they couldn't stay balanced. But if there's a solid thud and they collapse and it's clear the leg isn't working that would be one. There are always those who disagree with the ref of course.

I have always seen highlights but I’m really getting into it. These guys are warriors. The kicks and elbow strikes are thrown with such “bad intentions”. It’s a great sport.
