Also I know you're getting into football through the World Cup, but the football being played there is very different to club football. Club football is a lot more high paced than international football so if you find some of the games a bit boring its normal, a lot of football fans do too.

Lol there’s terrible matches in club football too even champions league has some. I think this World Cup has had some of the most intense matches I’ve ever seen in any World Cup it’s a lot faster because maybe it’s the middle of the season also players are more willing to give everything for their countries rather than their club teams. Depending on your club some of these players couldn’t give a damn and are there just for money while with the country it’s the absolute opposite

I can enjoy watching other teams play as well, like now with many matches in the World Cup that have been exciting. But for consistent entertainment, it may be important to find the team that suits you.

Agree, you're only fully invested once you have a team to support. It's either a "love on first sight" moment where you have an instant connection to a team (usually bc you have ties to their city or bc you're already a huge fan of one of their big players) or you take it slow, keep tabs on all major leagues and see which squad you grow to love. Or, there's always the third (and objectively best) option where you simply pick the team who's jersey you like the most!

Luke, I can’t express enough how much ur story mirrors my own. Tho I grew up half in Connecticut and half in Illinois, I was raised a cowboys fan bc my thoroughly central-Connecticut-trash (compliment, not an insult) dad fell in love with Staubach’s team as a kid. I played tackle football starting at 7 and didn’t stop till the end of high school, this sport will always run through my veins. My dad coached me throughout youth football and we watched hours and hours of games every weekend. One year, my family even ate thanksgiving dinner at a tailgate in the parking lot of the old Texas Stadium. But soccer is my favorite sport on earth, and has been since at least my late teens. For me, it started by taking Italian class in high school and trying to get more into the culture. Being a big sports fan, I wanted to connect to the sports culture of Italy too. What started as a side interest gradually grew into an all out obsession, to the point that I actually fell out of love with American football for a couple years after high school (tho thankfully I have long since recaptured my love of American football). I fell in love not only with the sport of association football, but with the fans, the atmosphere, the stadiums, and the great Crystal Palace Football Club. I found my connection to the USMNT to surpass any sports fandom I had yet experienced. I played fifa till the wee hours of the morning and spoke to my cousins in Sicily about the latest happenings in the wonderful world of the Rosanero (Palermo FC). This game overtook me and I am so thankful for it. These days I always say soccer is my favorite sport, but football will always have a special place in my heart. Crystal Palace is my favorite sports team, but the cowboys will always have a special place in my heart. It’s been about a decade since I first found my passion for the beautiful game, I haven’t looked back since. It is so wonderful to see you go through the same journey I did, to see a football fan fall in love with the beautiful game in real time. I really appreciate ur channel and can’t wait to continue to follow ur journey. So glad I found your channel!

When I was young around 18 years old (late 80's) an american guy came to my town in Italy (Turin) for studying, he was hosted by a friend of mine that was one of the crew we went (and still go) to watch Torino matches. We took him to the Curva Maratona that is the hottest part of the stadium. In the late 80's with no security rules the crowd was very impressive (12k people in a sector where now 5k are allowed to stay, it was like sardines in a can) and the support was really huge. You can't imagine his face, he was astonished, he had such a good time and when we scored he was taken away like he fell into an angry river lol. He fell in love with the sport. But more with the philosophy behind the support. I think it will never happen in USA but the real deal is when you have relegations and you understand that you would follow your team regardless the division and being there becomes more important than the score. It becomes like a religion. Cheers and f**k juventus

But there is a reason English/European football is called "The World's Game"... there is a place for both of course, but man... the feelings, the cultures you adopt from the fanbase and hometown of your club is beyond belief. I fell in love with it and I’ll never love another sport as much again. I recommend you watch other leagues too because they all are a bit different.
@felixwinkler6450 Жыл бұрын
It's called the beautiful game for a reason... I don't think one is better than the other, but you describe pretty well what makes it hard to get into American football (or baseball in that regard) as someone who is spoiled with association football. I bet there will be times when you enjoy one sport more than the other, but will always have a good time swinging back. They are different, but can be super fun for exactly those differences. What I figured for myself is that I need to pick a team when I watch American football before the game starts. The emotions stem mainly from "my" team doing well. There are only a few athletic moments in a game of American football that make it worth while watching without supporting a side. But, when I take sides, every play becomes extremely important, as making even a single mistake can cost "your" team ever so much as there are only so many paths to victory. Most games of association football I watch, I don't pick a side and still get to enjoy it for the beauty of it. Yet, for most of a game it might not be as exciting once a team is already ahead by two or three goals, as the clock can't be stopped and therefore the amount of opportunities to score not be increased due to tactical maneuvers. But maybe that's just me. You've talked about picking a team in association football eventually. Maybe you should wait and enjoy the game as a fan of the sport for a bit longer before choosing your club. And maybe think about for what reasons you'd want to pick a team. Should it be a top team or an average one - do you want to support a winner or do you want to have fun supporting somewhat of an underdog? Which can be fun, given that barely escaping relegation can be more exciting than winning the league seven games before the end of the season. Do you want to support a team for the city the team is located in? Or do you identify with the ideology of a team? Or the traditions? Do you see yourself in the other fans? Maybe you're in it for the rivalries? Do you know someone who already supports one club and you can join in? Do you like the politics of a club? Or do you hate the owner? Many clubs are actually fan-owned and maybe that's something that interests you. Two videos on that from a channel worth following: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqKuhpmhr7qJopI kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYvbh4qXbZVnfsU Thanks for letting us be a part of your journey.

Not a rant at all! I’ve been enjoying your journey and honestly quite fascinated with your appreciation for the structural and technical aspects of the game. And I do love your reflection and thoughts on the comparisons between ⚽️ and 🏈 I am by no means a football expert but I’ve watched it (more around World Cup time) since my teens. It’s called the beautiful game for a reason because when you do a deep dive, examine the angles, shapes, and almost poetry in the passes and movements, it takes on a life of its own. A gorgeous pass will make you moan in appreciation; a defender’s block will make you clap in happiness. And when the game is on a knife’s edge tension and a goal is scored, it’s like champagne spilling out of the bottle (ok overly dramatic but you get my point 😅) I’ve never gotten into NFL for the reason you mention- the stop and start is frustrating (as well as the 100 ads in between). The plays in and of themselves are fine (and when I was younger, I played around with some friends) but that stoppage drives me up a wall! In short, it’s great to see something I love so much through another’s eyes and though it may not replace NFL as you favourite, football will broaden your world in ways you can’t imagine. The World Cup is the perfect example of this - players and cultures from the major regions of the world, bringing their best (and worst!) aspects of themselves - all in hunt of sporting glory and history. Truly beautiful! All the very best and I look forward to more of your thoughts and opinions!

Hi Luke, I am an English Cowboys fan going back to the time of Danny White (not quite Roger Staubach) and Tony Dorsett. I was blessed to watch the Aikman Smith Irvin era where the Cowboys were so successful. Hopefully we get things right in the playoffs at some point and you get to see us lift a Superbowl title. We are doing well this season but I greatly fear the Eagles... With regard to the rest of the world's football. Just rejoice in enjoying both sports. Also be very glad because the USA is coming of age. England were very lucky to come away with a tie last night. I would say we played really really badly but that was in part due to the US never allowing us to settle. You guys played really well, especially given this is a young, almost developmental, US squad being prepared for the world cup in the US in four years time. The ONE thing I would hope for in the US now, given the success of the MLS is that you guys get a hierarchy of leagues and eventually embrace promotion and relegation. All American sport is WAY too cosy and sanitised in that respect with the dollar and nervous franchise owners dominating the agenda. My team, Everton, proudly hold the English record for the most seasons in the top flight and yet, last season, we came so close to relegation it was terrifying. The whole experience galvanised the fanbase into providing a level of support for the team rarely witnessed in England. We survived by winning our penultimate match and the outpouring of pure relief caused a massive, but non-violent, pitch invasion at the end of the game. It was truly a sight to behold. Anyway good luck with your channel and go Cowboys and come on you blues, up the Toffees!

Football is extremely satisfying to watch, and the moments of high quality are absolutely electric to witness. One thing I find myself loving is how every goal feels like a highlight reel goal. In American football, there are walk-ins from the 2 yard line, or in the NHL (my preferred major North American sport) you get garbage goals that really shouldn’t happen. Everything in football, however, feels very earned. Great video coach, maybe one day you'll be teaching football soccer. Hey! fun fact, not sure you know, but I read once the term soccer is actually British, they coined it. Early times of football in England, the two most popular sports were Rugby Football and Association Football, Rugby was actually referred to as just 'football' coloquially, so the other was reference as 'assoc' to eventually becoming 'soccer'. I believe some lads brought the term with them to US, since you guys didn't have any other point of reference and your country back then already knew about the sport called football (rugby), you took on the term 'soccer' for the sport played with your feet only. So, it's on the lads from the other side of the pond that in US, football is known as soccer 😅

THIS!! I know a lot of "typical American sports fans" (the ones that only follow the big 4 North American sports and think soccer is for sissies) that think soccer is super easy and basic. I always tell them to go to the park and try to control a ball with your feet, while a defender is running at you trying to steal it. Try to make an accurate long pass, try to make a bending shot. And when they complain about how players roll around on the ground too much over the slightest touch, I always offer to let me run as fast as I can, then stomp on their foot or kick them in the shin. Let's see if you don't roll around for a bit as well... :)

But the amount of time spent not playing is too much and that's why I watch highlights from NFL matches instead. Welcome to football (or soccer hahaha) it´s amazing. I fell in love with it with the 2014 World Cup and started playing it actually, unfortunately I stopped playing cause my knee was hurting a lot but I still love it and even though my country (Colombia) is not on the world cup this year I'm watching it and this time supporting Brazil. I'm suscribing to your channel and hope to see more soccer reactions!

There's three vídeos I think you should definitely watch: "History of football in 10 minutes, from the channel HITC Sevens" , "The rise of AC Milan" on a channel named Nouman, and "What is Tiki Taka" from Tifo football. AC Milan's coach in the late 80s and early 90s changed the way most teams defended, in a way he revolutionized the game. At the same time, Johan Cruyff l, who had been a phenomenal player in the 70s and definitely one of the GOATs, was coaching FC Barcelona and he revolutionized the way teams attacked and the "passing game" style. Most teams these days try to imitate either or both at the same time. Once you know a bit if the history of the game and you learn about the big changes that took place in the 87-94 period you'll understand the game better and when you watch games you'll begin to see the different styles much more clearly.

The thing about football that I love the most is that everyone can play it, any size any country any background, so is easy to connect with the game. Btw, you live the tactical aspects of the game, so you should watch Arsenal this season (we are top of the English Premier league for now) Mikel Arteta is a tactical freak and he had learned a lot from Pep Guardiola, Arsene Wenger, David Moyes and others. There's an Amazon documentary about last season that's really, really good. Marcelo Bielsa, Sampaoli, Tabárez and Manuel Pellegrini are some of the best DT/Coach from south America, if you want to learn from non European countries.

I actually thought that it was an american preference to have lots of downtime between short moments of play, giving commentators plenty of time to analyze what was just done and speculate on what could happen next. Made sense to me since that is how baseball seems to play out and that is massively popular over there too.

Sounds like the gripes you have with American football is the same thing I have. The stoppages is the main reason I have had a very hard time watch a game. But because of a friend who is a die hard Packers fan, I've slowly started liking it. I like the strategy that goes into it. But also the fysicality of it, then there are girls to look at if its getting boring. A very masculin game in that sense. Funny that you follow the cowboys, since I do to now. After Brady stopped at Patriots and my second favorite team got disbanded, Dallas are the only ones who still have that flair. Idk there's just something about them.

I'm from the UK and have had a similar path to you just the other way around where I fell in love with NFL about 6 years ago and one of the things I love about it is how tactical it is. the great design of plays and the fact that any team of the 32 teams can win a Superbowl if the franchise makes good decisions in draft and in free agency. Football for me is my main passion and the game is so more emotional to me but I think both can be enjoyed equally

Greetings, Luke. Im am a Spaniard who just acsually found your channel and therefore, this video. I am a die-hard fan of Football ("Soccer"), a deep follower of the town of my city, Gimnastic de Tarragona and RCD Espanyol, from Barcelona; i cannot describe the happiness and emotions that i have felt as you're talking about football, as this "magical" sport who has fluidity, "magic" and passion. I did truly felt it there and i must say, i did enjoy a lot how you explained the differences between the US football and the "european" football. I see that you have started to see some Premiership matches and, despite being good, they are mostly the "tip" of the iceberg. Being a follower of Gimnastic, i hava lived the happiness and proudness of being promoted and the sadness and desesperation of being relegated, the late afternoons with my pals, people who i know who have been attended to every home game since my memory has records of being in a football stadium, who we talk during the game and in the break, about how the team has played and our expectations; players go in and out, but the people stays and cheers despite being raining, sunny, cold or hot. Also, being and RCDE fan, i have seen the fierce rivarly between us and Barça, how the beautifull city of barcelona divides and creates an ambiance of hsotility and battle aura. Rivalries with 80 years old led to friendly clashes that end up with a decisisve win or loss, draw is seen as non-worthy. I do support your pursuit of watching football, and i hope you will arrive to love it and become part of this beutifull yet chaotic community of crazy dudes (and chics) who each weekend and/or day of the week wake up with the dizzy idea of what the future will gave them, go to the fields with those who you know since ages and travel whatever your beloved team goes, even those rainy thusrdays on Stoke or hot and dump days in Seville. PD (i do enjoy a lot of basketball; i have neever seen american Football, you thinks that it could be intereseting?)

I completely agree with the sentiments expressed in this video, as a fellow American turned “soccer” (football) fan, I still love watching NFL games, but the fluidity of a football game, a football game as the rest of the world knows it, is unmatched. You gotta love it. Much luck with KZbin, I find you incredibly entertaining and would love to see you blow up on KZbin. Definitely capitalize on the fact that the world cup is happening right now, videos about it should in theory do well as it is a trending topic.

I love that you’re so open minded and as a “Football” fan my biggest criticism of American football has been all the commercials and stops in the game. I love hockey though too and I like fast paced, aggressive, physical sports. So I would recommend that you check out some premier league games from the 90s and early 2000s if you can find them. Football during that time wasn’t as fluid and elegant like it is today but it was fast, aggressive, and so much more physical.

Some feedback on your thoughts: 1. Football have its share of stops in the game. Though the clock does run all the time, the game itseld can get stopped frequently (sure sometimes events does merit stopping the game, but a lot of the time it's players doing something to kill the game - feigning serious injury, fighting with each other / the ref, etc). In this world cup the refs add a lot of extra time to combat this, but the root problem remains. 2. You can love and enjoy both sports, and don't have to call it football to fit in - soccer is how it is called in your home.

I don't know if you have dived into rugby yet but might I suggest watching the catchup matches of the Rugby Nations Cup that has just concluded on Amazon Prime? It would be a great opportunity to take in the game through a tournament and see the countries playing for a trophy, rather than just an individual game. I think every game is available to view in its entirety, it will offer that brutal part of the NFL game that you enjoy, with less stop/starts, but also offering some of the fluidity of football.

There are 10 minutes and 45 seconds of action on average in an American Football game. That's 0:10:45 in about a 3 hour match. The play lasts about 3-8 seconds of action after a snap and then 1-2 minute stoppage to decide what to do next. As with everything, you can get used to it to the point of not noticing. And the broadcaster do a good job and making it not feel like it's as long at it is. Speaking of broadcasters, I always say that it's the perfect Capitalist sport because it was engineered for ads lol. It's the reason the sport is so rich. Every one of those stoppages is a perfect moment for an ad. It's why the Super Bowl is more popular for the Ads than the game itself

Hey, i think it's great that you're opening your eyes to real football! Have you seen the show Welcome to Wrexham? You might want to do a reaction series to that, when Rob McElhenney from Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Ryan Reynolds of Deadpool fame, buy a division 5 soccer team in Wrexham, Wales. They know fuck all about football, but they're smart enough to know that. It's a *great* show, really focusing on the impact that football has on parts of the world, and how much towns can center around it, much in the way of High School football might in some rural US states. The shocking thing really, is how good they're doing. They're currently on top of the National League table!

Hey man, I was just watching your vids and wondering when you were gonna upload your next vid on football lol you have some great vids on it so far :) If you like the tiki taka barcelona style - I highly recommend watching something on Wengerball. Arsene Wenger is one of the greatest coaches/managers to ever live and was the manager of Arsenal (one of the biggest clubs in English football, i'm also biased because its the club i support) for 22 seasons from 96 to 2018. His style of play & philosophy for the game pretty much shaped & changed the modern era of English football to what it is today and he came from a rather unknown background and Arsenal became the first "invincible" team ever in the premier league (going a whole season, 38 games unbeaten in 03-04 season) and received the only ever golden trophy for winning the Premier League. Tiki-taka & Wengerball are very similar in terms of style I think you'll enjoy it alot

There's a lot to learn in football actually. If you are analytical, Football will be your 2nd favourite sports. There's formation, player roles, positions, tactics, subtactics etc. I recommend watching Gentleman's League on Netflix, a Korean variety show where they invited Korean olympics athletes to form an amateur clubs coached by retired Korean football players. Their objectives is to put these Olympians on the spotlight through the world's famous sports. Since you're learning, the show is perfect for you. Like these invited athletes, they are also learning to play the game. The show also featured some on the trainings and tactics used in football. Plus its a Korean variety show, it will be funny.

I'm a Brazilian and I also like both football games. They're two completely different sports, but how unpredictable soccer is, is what makes me more a fan of it. As you said the physicality of the NFL is what is exciting about the sport, but watching 3 hours of TV to see a game that takes 1 hour of playing clock is sometimes exhausting.

With regard to the World Cup try and find some marquee match ups because the pace can be a little slow sometimes due to teams not wanting to take too many risks given the compressed nature of the tournament, this Sunday for example is Germany vs Spain, two of the most storied teams in history facing off in the group stage that should be a fun one to watch. Also recommend Lewandowski's 9 minute miracle....I'm biased though as a Pole

This is awesome! I'm glad you're enjoying the other football. It's definitely on the upswing here in the US, but definitely check out some of the amazing culture as well. In my opinion, the English Premier League is top of the heap followed by the Bundesliga in Germany and Ligue 1 in France. That's not at all to take away from any other clubs or leagues, but these are all easily accessible from the US, especially the EPL. I was in Amsterdam a few years ago when a German team was in town to play Ajax and to hear the fans singing and chanting and drinking was so cool. Dude great video, love to see someone starting to fall in love with this great sport. Something you'll also come to find out is that soccer in the top 5 leagues is different, The Premier League is fast-paced with really skillful and technical players, Seria A is kinda defence oriented and tactically shrewd, La Liga is more tecnical players and players that took their basics to whole new levels and Bundesliga, although sometimes it gets hated on because it's a "Farmers league" I feel like it's a mix of everything, German teams have always been very organized and Defensive wise very organized. Overall, I feel llike you are going to have fun watching soccer and also figuring out what team is going to be your favorite 😂. Also watching the Champions League, where every year there's a dark horse that surprises everyone (my fav was monaco 2017) Some other things that you might find interesting are the teams that are constantly bringing up young taletents like (Benfica, Ajax, Borrusian Dortmund, La masia *barca*) Super cool to see that Soccer is growing in the US

I'm a life-long european football (and F1) fan and last year I started following the NFL bc I started playing some flag football. I have to say american football is an amazing sport to watch but I could never watch it live on tv... there's about as much ads as there is gameplay! So I only watched the games as recordings so I could skip the ad breaks or I just watched the highlights. What ultimately turned me off in the end though was the format of NFL. You play an 18 games regular season... and in the end everything gets decided through a knock-out bracket of best of 1 games?? Not even home/away games?! The outcome of the playoffs just seemed incredibly random... some of the games even got decided through a coin-flip bc of the very weird and unfair overtime system! In the end I was left feeling that I wasted my time following the 18 week regular season if it literally doesn't matter in the end. And then the crazy long offseason also didn't help matters... Once the nfl started again this year I found that I wasn't invested in the league anymore so I didn't follow this year's season so far. But again, I'm not trying to bash you're sport here, I still think the gameplay of american football is incredible to watch, but I hope you can understand my feelings.
@lukessportsacademy Жыл бұрын
That’s an interesting perspective. The regular season matters because you are trying to win your division to earn a spot in that knockout tournament. I guess that always made sense to me. The better overall record affects whether you play at home or on the road in the “knock-out” bracket. It makes it extremely hard to win a title every year (unless your team is fortunate enough to have Tom Brady under contract.)
@musculusiv4172 Жыл бұрын
@@lukessportsacademy I was aware about the incentives you get for being good in the regular season... it just felt very anticlimactic to me to see e.g. the Packers who domited the RS simply go out in 1 game off the back of some special teams fuckups. Or seeing the amazing duel between the 2 greatest young QBs get decided by a literal coinflip. Just felt very unrewarding to watch, after over 18 long weeks of games. Personally I would make the playoffs either home + away games or even make them a double-elimination bracket
