As someone who grew up in Illinois, surrounded by Bears fans, NO ONE was on the Grossman train. Not even in 2006. Everyone knew how crappy he was. That '06 Bears Defense is what piloted that team to the Super Bowl that year. It was that defense that won them games that were sure losses, like the Cardinals game that year. "THEY ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE!!!"

Bob Sanders would be one of the greatest examples of this. In his longest stretch of available play (playoffs and regular season in 2007), he pumped up all of the Colts' defense, won a Superbowl and won defensive player of the year. Injuries ate out most of his career, but when he could play, he was a beast.

STEVE SPURRIER, 1972 San Francisco 49'ers---took over for an injured John Brodie at QB, won 5 of 6 games down the stretch and got the 'Niners into the playoffs. RICKY BELL, 1979 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Ricky WAS the offense for the Bucs. Got them within 1 game of the Super Bowl.

He was a highly touted HS recruit headed into college at Notre Dame. Its interesting how some guys could dominate so much at lower levels then have lackluster careers in the pros…like Ron Powlus. Probably the most hyped HS recruit ever, 4 year starter at Notre Dame back when they were the top program in the country, broke tons of school records…then never made it past the practice squad in the NFL.

Don't forget Bell. Working as a phone salesman before getting 1000. I think Eddie Royal should be on this list. His rookie season with Cutler and Marshall was amazing. He was good but never had 90 catches again and someone who should have been a star was just a decent slot guy. That was a year to remember, and then Tebow came and perhaps ruined Royal or was it, McDaniels. Either way Royal never found the magic of his rookie year.

Hillis wasn't a high draft pick because of two other RB on his college team. Darren McFadden and Felix Jones! Hillis played FB because the Hogs didn't need 3 RB, but basically had 3 RB's on the field 90% of their plays. Best running trio in college football.

As an old Bears fan, the first guy I thought of was Marcus Robinson. In 1999, he was 24 years old and caught 84 balls for 1400 yards and 9 TD's. He was 6'3" and could really leap and was grabbing every 50/50 ball they chucked his way. I was like, "Yeah, we got our Randy Moss!" And then he had injuries and you know the rest of the story.

Greg Cook wasn't a one-year wonder. He suffered a freak injury in his throwing arm in the middle of his rookie season, and despite his team telling him to sit out the rest of the year, he still finished the year. The strain he put on his already injured arm was such that he couldn't even pick up a ping pong ball without experiencing excruciating pain. That and the Bengals announcing they were going to start Virgil Carter for the 1970 season forced him into retirement. He still tried to come back, though. There were reports of him trying out for the Bengals as late as 1983, 14 years after his rookie season. In the end, though, a comeback was not meant to be. He would spend the rest of his life depressed and as a painter. Former teammate Bob Trumpy said that at one point, Cook was living in an abandoned apartment near the side of a road, trying to sell his paintings for a dollar per piece. He ended up dying alone, never achieving what he wanted to achieve, all because of a single injury.

I would also say Amos Zereoue was a one hit wonder for the Steelers. He had started to come on in 2001 for the Steelers, had a really strong 2002 season with 762 yards and 42 catches. He was named the starter in 2003 and took the job from Jerome Bettis, but fell off in 2003 and ended up losing his job back to Bettis and never really had the success he did in 2002.

Mike Shanahan is TOTALLY responsible for RGIII’s shortened career. He injured the same leg TWICE in the regular season, but pushed through to start a playoff game. It was against the Seahawks and was Russell Wilson’s first playoff game too. RGIII led the “Skins to a 14-0 lead, but was playing on one leg. Instead of letting Kirk Cousins (who he wanted all along) manage the game, he kept Griffin in, only to have him get injured a THIRD time! He was never the same again. All in the name of trying (and failing) to prove he could win without Elway. He is DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE for ruining what was once a promising future. There is NO EXCUSE for that! For the first time since the glory days, fans in Washington had something to hope for. And Shanahan’s stubborn megalomania ruined it all. I will NEVER forgive him!

Paul Hofer of the 49ers gained 760 yards from scrimmage in his first six games in 1980 on his way to being the first RB with both 1000 yards rushing and receiving in a season. He suffered an injury and retired a season later.

Buerhlein wasn't all that bad over his career. He was just a better back up than anything. He reminded me alot of my personal favorite mostly career back up, Wade Wilson. When given the opportunity, he did the most with it more often than not.

The thing people forget about Larry Brown is that in 1994, he also had a good year. He recorded four interceptions and 51 combined tackles, which, while isn't super great, are solid numbers for a starter. Of course, he fell off a cliff after Super Bowl XXX, so people seem to think it was just one good season and then the fall, when in reality, he was good for about two years. Still a flash in the pan, but not quite to the degree some people think.

How many QBs got better after a early career injury? Drew Brees, Matt Stafford, Carson Palmer, Alex Smith, Dak Prescott, Carson Wentz, Roger Staubach, Deshaun Watson, Derek Carr ALL had early injuries in their careers and got better. So to suggest a coaching staff ruined his career is bull. Rex Grossman was always bad, even during Bears SB run. I'm a bears fan, that team was all defense and special teams(Hester and Robbie Gould). Bad Rex was always around the corner from good Rex, if he'd been half decent, we could've beat the Colts. Hester returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, and we still lost. He was just a bad QB on a great team.

Am I the only one who had no idea that the Bengals' uniforms used to look damn near IDENTICAL to the Browns' uniforms? I take it Paul Brown wanted to stick it to the Browns and therefore decided that his new team would basically copy their uniforms. I also assume the NFL eventually made him change the uniforms, although maybe they just changed over time to be more distinctive. Either way I was honestly shocked seeing how those early Bengals uniforms looked.

2015 Broncos defense was the greatest. When you consider the offensive era the NFL is now. Sure, the 70’s Steelers, ‘85 Bears, 2000 Ravens were great. But by 2015 the League became ALL about offense. You can’t even Hit hard anymore. That 2015 Denver D was Awesome. Carried Denver too a super bowl despite a crippled Manning and Brock Osweiler as the QB’s.

There's an alternate timeline where Greg Cook didn't get hurt, Paul Brown gives the starting job to Bill Walsh after retirement, and the west coast offence gets introduced to the league a decade earlier, with Cook being the Joe Montana of the 70's. At least this is how I always assumed Bill Walsh picturing how things could've gone down. Would've been really interesting to see what that would've looked like. The Steel Curtain vs the Love Yah Blue Oilers vs the Bill Walsh Bengals and their revolutionary offence battling it out for AFC Central supremacy throughout the 70s.
