Stop me if you've heard this one before- a man is being told by everyone that he's too old and should quit, and he refuses and says that he's better than ever and hasn't lost a step and that he's the team's only chance at winning. Well, this happened in 1973 with New York Jets wide receiver Don Maynard, as the Jets and head coach Weeb Ewbank begged him to retire due to his poor performance and old age. As for what happened next...

Anyone that thinks this is me supporting one candidate or disavowing another candidate missed the point entirely. All this was is the objective fact that the person in charge is old and people want him to stop.

The execution of this video is abysmal, honestly. A "Dumb Decision" if I must say. Saying Trump would do better, despite him only being 2-3 years younger than Biden, and completely ignoring how divided Congress is at the moment that caused little to nothing to be done in the first place, is just plain ignorance. Yes, Biden is way too old and mentally unfit to be running again. However, literally the exact same thing can be said for Trump as well. The video should have been entirely apolitical, regardless of opportunity. Regardless if this would have been about Trump or Biden, you have alienated roughly half your audience statistically.

As I said below, Maynard probably had more of a connection with Simeon Rice, who like Maynard in the WFL, came back to play for the Sentinels in the UFL in 2009 and vowed to make QBs pay (yes all *three* opposing QBs🤣😆) and instead was a massive flop. But as I also said, Rice isn't exactly a topic in July 2024. All your vids that had any political connection whatsoever were just that, topical. Ignore the noise.

I never said anything about the other guy doing better. The whole point of this vid, like many of my vids, is to relate it to a situation happening today. The situation today is “Biden is old, he’s down in the polls, people want him to drop out, he’s not dropping.” That’s all it was. This was not an endorsement of any kind. Both candidates are objectively old. Trust me- the last thing I want to do is alienate my audience and endorse a particular candidate. At no point did I ever even allude to endorsing a candidate or making any claim about anyone else.

My favorite Don Maynard story was when he renewed a contract with the Jets in the 1960s. Weeb Ewbank told Don not to reveal how much money he was going to make, and Don replied "Don't worry about it Weeb, I'm just as embarrassed about it as you are."

Don actually finished his playing days in 1974 in the upstart World Football League with the Houston Texans, who became the Shreveport Steamer in mid-season. He caught just 5 passes in a league that included numerous players who had come out of retirement. He finally retired as a player after that season, and served as the Steamer's receivers coach until the league folded during the 1975 season.

I saw a documentary a while back where they did a piece on Maynard and they talked to some of his teammates and they all said one thing about him, not exactly related to his football skills. They said he was a monumental cheapskate. He never spent a dime if he could avoid it. Then they asked Maynard if it was true and he kind of laughed and said, "Yeah". So he wasn't gonna give up football as long as he was getting paid. Mot mentioned in the video is Maynard trying to catch on in the World Football League after the Rams cut him. In the WFL, you often didn't get paid because all the teams were broke. Maynard wasn't a volunteer football player.

Maynard ended up with the Houston Texans who moved to the Shreveport Steamers of the NFL. I remember the weirdness of those years like 1974. In those days teams played 6 preseason games. In 1974, there was a strike from July 1st to August 10th. I thought with all the WFL stuff that the NFL was collapsing. My young mind couldn't handle that.

Technically, Don did try to prove them wrong by jumping over to the World Football League in 1974(Playing for the Houston Texans, who moved to Shreveport mid-season), but didn't do anything of note(Had just 5 catches all season), and retired for good at nearly 40(It wouldn't be until Jerry Rice nearly 30 years after that an 40 year old Wide Receiver would have a productive season).

Yes because this the first ever vid that he's done with any political connection whatsoever. Totally never did: RFKJ Super Bowl ad NFL playing week 11 1963 (JFK assassination) John Lennon on MNF in 1974 (which also had the outgoing Gov Reagan in an amusing face-off) 1978 Steelers/49ers MNF (assassination of George Moscone and Harvey Milk) If he went back and did a vid on Trump's commentary during Army/Navy in 2016 fair game. Speaking as a Democrat, this DEFINITELY did not age well. Several hours ago, he called Zelensky Putin, and referred to Kamala as Vice President Trump. It doesn't get any worse than that. I… uh… never said anything about supporting him. Where the heck did you get that? All I said was the observation (which is true) that the man in charge right now is old I always relate videos whenever I can to current events. The parallels between the two are similar. That’s all. I never at any point made an endorsement for anyone or expressed a belief regarding anyone. The only thing I said (which is true) is that the current POTUS is old (as would the other guy running but no one in his camp is calling for him to drop out; if they were, I would’ve titled the vid after that).
