Today I will be talking about something that I rarely discuss on this channel and that's officiating in the NHL. Are they a problem? just watched the refs hand the rangers all 4 of their victories.

my biggest issue is how the refs will call a soft penalty on one team but miss that exact same penalty on the other team. i get its quick paced and you’ll miss some but when it happens right in front of the refs or at center ice there’s no way they didn’t see it. no consistency and arguable favoritism.

Consistency is my biggest issue personally, they need to call games a certain way for both teams that way it seems fair while watching

Mcdavid has honestly been kinda a rat in the Vancouver series high sticking giving some extra slashes but the soucy suspension is not deserved penalty yes suspension no

The way the rule is written, it is very explicit. Didn't matter if Swayman wouldn't get it anyway, doesn't matter it the shove was soft.

I only watch Canucks games but the refs have been questianable! Hughes getting hit in the face by McDavid with high stick and not called (despite bleeding). Even pundits were surprised at that! Situation with McDavid, it was after final whistle which made a difference to the overall verdict... However he should not be suspended imo anyways sounds like I'm not objective bit there were situations against Canucks during the games where refs could call it and Oilers would have PP... Again these have been missed. What also makes me mad is terrible positioning of these refs where they are getting hit with the puck constantly in the offensive zone!! Get out of there now!!

Could’ve gone either way, but if an Oilers player does anything like this and they don’t get suspended, that’s when we will see if there is a one sided issue here

The calls should be consistent. Either make the call on both sides or put the whistles away.

It's a lot like college basketball where so much technically illegal contact is ignored that when they call one, fans whine that it's a soft call. If you're watching a game with a rooting interest, you're almost bound to think it's unfair because it's impossible to keep count of all the calls that weren't made both ways. We tend to focus on big plays that either result in a goal socred or disallowed or an injury, but the problem is inherent in a sport where the refs use their discretion rather than simply call evey foul they see. I don't think they are rigging games but I do think they call it differently for different players, and that sometimes leads to bias.

We’re not even going to talk about blowing the play dead in the Bruins attacking zone with no injury or mask malfunction visible, just because Bobrovski was out of the net?

The officiating has just been egregiously inconsistent. I get that certain players get a little more protection than others, or at least are watched more actively so penalties around them are seen more often, but the rule book in general seems way too vague. So much of it just depends on what the refs happen to see and call, and if they WANT to call something. They’re becoming game managers and it feels obvious they’re deciding what to call based on the state of the game at the time, not if something was actually a hard penalty or not.

Not sure if you talked about this before, but could been mentioned in this video as well. when Florida pushes or drives Boston´s Lauko into their goalie and Lauko gets 2 min for goaltending interference. how the fuck does that make sense? He didnt have option to collide with the goalie because of stalking Panters player that was pushing him from the back. Its super stupid penalty.

Bennett is a thug. He should've been suspended by the league for what is clearly a sucker punch to Marchand that resulted in a concussion.

Both Vancouver players should have been suspended for the double cross-check, because of intent to injure. Bennett should also have been suspended. Bennett's goal should have been called back, and so should the one where Bobrovsky's stick was knocked out of his hand. NHL reffing, play reviews, and player safety are the biggest joke in professional sports.

The NHL has the camera angle NOW and it clearly shows an egregious, dangerous sucker punch to the face that took Marchand out for multiple games. With the evidence from the new camera angle they should still suspend Bennet for at least a game, probably two. Punching to the head was the primary motive & contact, it wasn't an accident and is not a hockey play. It injured the player for multiple games. If it was just a big body check that caught his head that's one thing but it was a punch to the head first and a check 2nd. They have the evidence now and should call it now even after a couple games have passed as it was so dirty. I really dislike Marchand but if they suspend a guy for the Mcdavid stuff than Bennet should surely be suspended too. Also, the Oilers have the most dangerous power play ever, they know that. That's why in the Vegas series last year and the Vancouver series this year, the Oilers are constantly overplaying small crosschecks and stuff in order to get on the PP (Don't bring up the Pietrangelo slash, that was a dirtbag move and should have got him at least one more game)
