Absolutely agree. Theres a lot of solo films where sequels would ruin it, but there’s honestly a lot of places they could go with this one. Like for example his daughter being older, getting involved in some criminal stuff by association with someone, and bringing the case to her dad. But he spends so long telling her what to do, that she just works the case herself 😂😂

I can't believe that, at the 20:45 mark, Simone missed the perfect joke. When Ryan Gosling falls asleep behind the wheel and crashes, and the briefcase bursts open, and Simone says "It's not real money, right?" George says, "Yeah, you can see it - it's like flyers and stuff." Simone totally should have said, "Just say it's flyers. Don't say and stuff." 🤣🤣🤣

"Dad, there's like whores here and stuff." So many people love to say Hollywood doesn't make enough original movies these days, but then a great original movie like "The Nice Guys" comes along and they all decide they're too good for it. This is why this film is so criminally underrated. It deserves a sequel so bad!
@korganrocks3995 Жыл бұрын
To be fair, most people don't seek out information about upcoming releases, so if the movie company doesn't market an original movie, it won't get seen. The fault lies with the movie company for not realising they had a diamond on their hands and just throwing it out there during a month when there were several high profile movies to compete with and not even marketing it.
@KyleS3m3noff Жыл бұрын
Guillermo del Toro said this exact thing in an interview years ago. It was along the lines of "You always ask why they don't make any original films anymore? It's because when they do, you motherfuckers never show up!"

The punch combo Russell Crowe uses on Keith David is an homage to the punch combo he used on Joaquin Phoenix in "Gladiator," and Ryan Gosling's stammering bit when he sees the corpse next to him (Robert Downing Jr in an uncredited cameo) is an homage to "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein). The movie has lots of little nods like that to other movies. The movie makers are bigger fans of classic movies than most people in the audience.

Shane Black first became famous for writing the original Lethal Weapon, as well as appearing in Predator as the guy who keeps telling jokes about women's anatomy (I'd say the word but I don't want my comment to be auto-flagged). He's also, by the way, *not* the director or writer of the original Predator, he's only in Predator as an actor, although he may have done some uncredited work on the script while on the set. He wrote and directed the 2018 sequel The Predator, but the movie was hacked to bits in post-production and is generally not very well-liked -- Prey was way better. In 2005, he made his directing debut with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which he also wrote, and which was the first movie that Robert Downey Jr. appeared in after being released from prison on drug charges. It's extremely funny -- given you loved this, I think you'll be over the moon with that one -- and I'm sure more than half the comments are going to recommend it. Although the movie was a box office flop, it proved that Downey was stable enough to work again, and so Downey returned the favor by getting Black a gig doing uncredited script doctor work on Iron Man and Iron Man 2, culminating in Black writing and directing Iron Man 3. As some others have mentioned, Sid Shattuck's dead body down by the tree is played by Downey in an uncredited cameo. Black sets every one of his movies at Christmas for some reason. However, that means that in addition to KKBB, December would be a great time to watch one of my favorite movies that he wrote, Renny Harlin's Long Kiss Goodnight, starring Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson. Jackson routinely cites LKG as his favorite of his own movies. Also extremely funny and entertaining. Actually, you've seen a bit of footage from it -- New Line Cinema repurposed clips from it for the 3D movie that's playing at the theater in The Final Destination. I think the TV show Simone was talking about in the Patreon intro was "Soul Train," although maybe it was "The Electric Company." You probably recognize Angourie Rice, who plays March's daughter Holly, from the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies, where she plays Betty Brandt (who dates Ned while they're on vacation in the second film, Spider-Man: Far From Home). Since "The Waltons" was on at the time when the movie was set, the guy in the movie is definitely not the actor from the show. I assume the mole is the reason he was given a nickname that matches a guy on the show. It's nothing like this movie, but I hope Michael Mann's The Insider (1999) is on your radar. A great true story journalism drama by the director of Heat, and I think Russell Crowe's best work. He's also in a really great Australian indie by Jocelyn Moorhouse called Proof (1991) that I'm sure almost nobody has heard of.

The Waltons was a TV show from the 70s starring Richard Thomas (an actor with a big mole on his cheek) as John boy Walton. The assassin played by Matt Bomer probably got the nickname John Boy because of the mole on his cheek. The movie is not implying that a fictional version of Richard Thomas would moonlight as a button man for the Detroit mob.

I scanned down a bit and didn't see this so I'm gonna say it - sorry if it's redundant. 🙃 Russell Crowe has said that his character in this movie and his character in "L.A. Confidential" are the two he'd rather like to play again in sequels. Nobody went to see "Nice Guys" so that ain't gonna happen any time soon but Russell's character in "Nice Guys" could be read as Russell's character in "L.A. Confidential" twenty years later. He's a bruiser who's doing his best to protect women in both movies. If you tilt your head and squint, Kim Basinger's character from "L.A. Confidential" got poisonously cynical after her experiences in that film, split up with Russell, got a law degree, went into law enforcement and ended up doing the bidding of the automotive industry so SHE works too! If you REALLY tilt your head and squint. A lot. You might need a blindfold for her, actually. 🤷♂ Anyway, the Russell Crowe thing makes me happy inside. 😊 Oh, and Robert Downey Jr. plays Sid Shattuck's corpse. He did it for laughs in return for "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang." 🥰

This movie reminds me of what it was like as a kid in the 70s. There really were some concerns about lead poisoning and gasoline. Detroit and the gas companies would go after anybody trying to get the lead out. Clair Cameron Patterson was the scientist that proved lead gasoline was deadly. The companies went after him, and he was protected by all branches of the USA military. Protestors faking death were real as well. Smog over California was brutal in the 70s.
