This fight is one of the best fights ever! However, the rules clearly states that a fighter must respond to the referee when asked “Are you ok?” Just by that, Taylor didn’t even say a word and that caused worry prompting the ref to stop the fight. It was the right decision either way because Taylor was a mess at the hospital, both orbital bones in his eyes were fractured and he urinated blood which was not good at all.

@uncletony62102 ай бұрын
Here's what happened: During the count, Lou Duva thought that the bell had sounded/round had ended and was thus climbing into the ring to tell ref (in fact, the bell had not sounded). Taylor was distracted by this, which resulted in his failure to satisfactorily answer Steele's question. Regarding whether it was a good stoppage: Despite the official time, Steele waived the fight off at 2:55 (NOT 2:58). This is significant because while 2 seconds left is not enough time for JC to land another punch, FIVE seconds is. And Taylor was in NO condition to take another punch. Thus, it was a good stoppage, i.e., had Steele allowed the fight to continue, Mel could have died. He was already close to it.

I remember this and the aftermath very well. I was a teenager but I had men from my gym that went to this fight. Everyone I spoke to that was there said this was a completely different fight in person vs on tv. They said JCC’s punches were so “hard”, that even though Taylor was hammering Chavez too that you could really see how “heavy handed” Chavez was. That’s why the scorecards were so much closer then we all had it from our view point. I think Taylor was definitely winning ether way but he was physically hurt by that last round. I think Richard Steel had Taylor’s best interest at heart. He’s there to protect these guy and as I am older now I can understand that he wasn’t thinking well maybe Chavez won’t make it over her or there is just a couple seconds left. He saw a kid that had taken a lot of hard hard shots and he had seen enough. Great video. Thank you.

The great trainer Emanuel Steward, who was also ringside, said the same thing, that Chávez's shots were much more impactful. I agree on Steele, he took a lot of unfair flack due to the timing of this stoppage, with people alleging he was paid off by Don King. That the same referee effectively ended Chávez's epic unbeaten run 4 years later, in the first Randall fight by penalizing Chávez two points for low blows, never gets a mention.

If you're a huge boxing fan we've watched fighters die in the ring and at times it could have been potentially prevented with a better referee. Taylor didn't respond, fighters have to respond and it's not the job of the ref to pay attention to the clock. It's crazy to me how fans bitch about the stoppage. The later the rounds, the more accidents and deaths happen, that was a big reason for why 15 rounders don't happen anymore. The ref is bound to be indifferent to the outcome, so when a fighter is taking a huge beating in the final round, stumbeling across the ring, not responding properly, relying on the ropes to stand it's a textbook stoppage. You have to oppose stoppages in general to argue against it at all.

Taylor could have said any jibberish to Richard Steele to cover those 2 seconds and he would have been saved by the bell under IBF rules. @maxmustermann90582 ай бұрын
@@ericdelossantos1 No, you need principles, you can't change your principles for a fight. With the fighter unable to respond and held up by the ropes, you have to bite the bullet that fights should continue even when somebody is unconscious. I think the best way to approach this connundrum is: if there was more time in the clock, let's say, a full minute, would it be ok to let taylor continue the fight? If your answer is no, then he lost and the stoppage is justified, plain and simple. The rules enforce a simple principle here, if a boxer can't fight anymore then he lost, period, the remaining time in the clock is irrelevant. And in this case, Taylor was certainly done for, he could not continue to fight. People that argue Taylor should've won speak more in terms of mercy rather than merit: - "There were only 2 seconds in the clock, they should've let him win" - "He gave his all, he deserved to win" - "He was never the same after that fight, he should've tasted greatness at least that one time" Wishful thinking doesn't change the fact that out of the two Taylor was in shambles, while Chavez couldve easily keep going, and in the end, glory must be obtained based on actions instead of pity. Had this fight been organized in the 15 round era of boxing, no one would dispute the outcome.

There's an HBO documentary on this fight. One of those interviewed was Richard Steele, the referee. He said the audience didn't realize what kind of punishment Meldrick Taylor was taking. Chavez was hitting him with hard bone crunching punches, as Steele put it. A boxing journalist at the fight said, one minute Meldrick was winning the next the guy looked like he ran into a windmill. In the documentary, they showed the biggest mistake came from Meldrick's corner who told in the last round to go for it. They had to win the last round. During the interview Lou Duva changed his story, "I told him to dance and stay away". As big as this was, Meldrick got the rematch with Chavez. It wasn't the end of the story, but as the fight doctor said, "once the will to fight is beaten out of you, it's gone." Chavez knocked Taylor out in the rematch.

When I originally watched this fight I couldn’t see all the damage Chavez was doing with those single big shots. My opinion is different than a lot of people's. Not only did Taylor not get robbed, but it if Steele hadn't stopped the fight he would have intentionally robbed CHAVEZ. This is why; there are three main ways to win a match, DQ (irrelevant here), a decision, split or otherwise, or a KO/TKO. Watch the final minute and a half or so, where Chavez was snapping Meldrick's head back with almost every punch and then watch the the stoppage itself. If that exact same sequence, with all the damage already absorbed during the fight, happened at let's say 1:40 of round 9 absolutely NO ONE, would think it was a bad stoppage. So if Chavez rendered Taylor unable to continue and the ref decides to intentionally ignore that bc there's only 2 seconds left, then he arbitrarily takes the victory Chavez earned away from him and gives it to Taylor. Chavez did his job. He rendered Taylor unable to continue. If he didn't stop it he'd be robbing him bc he wanted the other fighter to win

This is where I disagree. While this fight, put the first crack in Taylor's armor, he still went up to 147, won the WBA Welterweight Championship, and defended it multiple times. When he fought Terry Norris at a higher weight class, he got blitzed and starched in 4 jokes called rounds. Then he was embarrassed by Espana for his title, and then knocked out in 8 against Chavez in the rematch. After the Norris fight, Taylor was done.

Long lives The king of Boxing, Julio Cecar Chavez!
@cans5972 ай бұрын
A friend of my father was a pro-broxer in Tijuana during the 80s, he had the opportunity to spar Chavez during his camp leading up to the Rosario fight. He told my father that during one session, Chavez knocked out 6 sparring partners in a row (him included), and that was when he realized that Chavez was a boxing monster that would become legendary. I see this fight and I just believe that story more, prime Chavez was a devastating force that (unfortunately) gave Taylor permanent brain damage during their two fights, the damage he delivered was unreal. I also recall Ruben Castillo saying that Chavez broke his orbital bone and two ribs during their fight, this is terrifying considering neither Salvador Sanchez nor Alexis Arguello obliterated Castillo the way Chavez did.

@@cans597 The thing that annoys me about the "Chavez ruined Taylor" theory is that 2 fights later, Taylor becomes the WBA Welterweight Champ and defended the belt 3 or 4 times. Chavez put the first crack in Taylor's armor, but with his full contact "Philly Style" training along with getting destroyed by much larger guys like Terry Norris, Chrisanto Espana, and his TKO in Chavez 2 did more to end his career.

Meldrick Taylor got robbed by his corner. They told him he needed the 12th to win. Meldrick would land four and get hit by one. Land 3 and get hit by none. Don’t in fight if you have significantly better footwork and hand speed. He lost more than the fight. Meldrick Taylor was never the same after this fight. The corners job is to take care of the fighter and they failed in their game plan and fight analysis. They cost him a great career

That's interesting! Did they tell him to win by infighting though? Seems that Taylor had made his point there and could have backed off in the late rounds and still out pointed Chavez.
@anthonyrobinson-ew7hi2 ай бұрын
Yes indeed once Taylor got the lead in the fight all he had to do was stick and move
@TheModernMartialArtist2 ай бұрын
Yeah I mean you could make the point his legs were tired or near gone by that time, but a lot of boxers get more worn out by the wrestling that comes with infighting, especially if they're not used to it. But at the same time Chavez was a master at cutting off the ring, so maybe the pace Taylor would have been forced into while circling would have been too much. The coaches probably could have given better advice, but hindsight is 20/20 and it was Taylor who wanted to prove he could go shot for shot. And honestly glad he did, incredible fight!

@@TheModernMartialArtistCheck out HBO Legendary Fights on KZbin if you haven't seen HBO's retrospective on the fight. It's worth watching with Lou Duva lying out of his mouth telling Taylor to "Move, Move, but don't fight" while the camera footage says the exact opposite and that it's close and he needs this round.

I always think of this fight every time I'm facing a difficult challenge and feel like calling it quits. I think of the words from Chavez's trainer, "give it everything you got! For God's sake, Julio, don't stop throwing punches, do it for Mexico, do it for your family!" There's no point in arguing whay should've or could've happened in any other scenario. It is what it is. History was made that night, an incredible one at that. Just enjoy it and take the lesson: never stop fighting!

Taylor's corner should have thrown in the towel after round 11. He was physically beaten. Enough with all this "warrior" stuff - long term health is what's important. Taylor suffered broken bones behind the eye and received a transfusion for blood loss because of a cut lower lip. His corner should have known that he was in danger of damage. Nuts.

taylor definitely deserved to win but i think the ref made the right call, if a fighter is unconscious, doesn't respond properly or doesn't beat the count then they've been knocked out and if you get knocked out before the round ends it's over. from an ethics/safety perspective i also agree with the ref's logic, it's not his place to think about how much time is left and if there was a precedent for "oh there's only x amount of time left" then that would be extremely dangerous, obviously 2 seconds isn't enough time for anything to happen but as little as 5 more seconds could've gotten him killed. there should maybe be a rule where if you get knocked down with under 20s left then as long as you make it to your feet the round just ends to prevent this from happening, but that rule didn't exist at the time so the ref was absolutely in the right

He also didn't stand by himself without the help of the ropes, and didn't present his arms to show he was again in condition, so ti was 3 signs, not just only 1. The Bout is about who makes it better either by points, or manages to knock out the other guy within the complete time, not the majority of it, the whole route. That was made by JC, not by MT. That being said, as always, very good analisys. Thank you!

I had just turned 20 and was at the fight at the Hilton with my parents and brother. We made the trip from LA. Still have my "Thunder vs. Lightning" vinyl jacket, program, and poster. In the end, Richard Steele did the wrong thing for the right reason. But what nobody mentions is that Lou Duva had crawled upon the ring apron during that fateful count to Taylor--and automatic disqualification. I remember walking through the casino afterwards and taking a picture with Richard Steele as he was being escorted out to his car. He still had his WBC shirt on stained with blood everywhere. Great memories. Also went to rematch 4.5 years later at the MGM. By then, Taylor was no longer the phenom he was, although he put up a great fight.

Richard Steele made the right call, it was Lou Duva who made the biggest mistake. He should have told Taylor to run, hold and stay away from JCC the entire round, he was up on 2 cards, he makes it out the 12th hes champ. But Chavez landed that beautiful right hand and Taylor was out of it. Once he got up he never let go of the rope, could take a step and kept looking down. He didnt respond to Steele with a 'yes' or a nod, his eyes were all over the place. Now we know he suffered brain injuries during this fight, theres no question it was the right call.
