Unless of course, if they drink and smoke excessively and fuck up their voice. Martin is just using a chesty voice with this band.

Technically he can hit higher notes now. Some of the notes at the end of the line in this song are hit in full chest voice. I am 96% certain that he was unable to do that during BLG days. The vocal technique he used in BLG is very different from the one with this band. To create the BLG sound, you mix your head and chest voice and place it at the back of your mouth with an airtight gut to make it sound thin and bratty. The sound he is using for The Night Game is resonating in the chest area, and hence it is very different. If Martin were to perform a BLG song now in the original key, he would sound a lot better than he did back then because his voice has become stronger. Back then in BLG, they used to perform nearly all their songs half-step down when live. It's worth noting the dropped guitar and open chords that have stayed constant with Martin since BLG.
