I covered an early demo build of The Night is Grey a couple of years ago, but the full game has just been released. It's a tender and touching horror story that's more about becoming invested with the characters than scares and monsters (though there are some very cool freaky monster moments). The ending is especially well done. Hope you like it! :)

What a fantastic ride of a game. It's tough to pull off a slow building, character oriented horror story, but the writing and art direction really pulled through. As far as the story is concerned, this was my understanding: Our protagonist Graham is a poor vagrant who has suffered from an abusive childhood. He is a highly impulsive and socially anxious individual, who at some point developed a para social obsession with Ava (Hannah's mother). It's possible he is the son of the Pelletier family, as he seems to struggle with a similar condition to the late Mr. Pelletier, whereby his thoughts are rambling and incoherent. This isn't clear, as Graham mentions his father died in another mine, and that he also has a brother, but the narrative Graham dictates to the player is polluted by a need to dissociate from past events and is thus unreliable. It's worth noting that during chapters 5 and 6, he repeats to himself that "...he's an adult now..." and "...She'll understand...", which could allude to the idea he was indeed the previous assailant of Ava all those years ago, hence his obsession with her now. I believe the wolves are a manifestation of Graham's fractured psyche - The wolves themselves representing him, with the corpses that burst out of them symbolizing the suppressed guilt he feels over killing Ava. On some levels he appears conscious of this, such as when he expresses confusion over the wolf actively hunting Hannah, because he knows they shouldn't be capable of harming anything outside his own mind. I got the impression he might have a kind of 'werewolf syndrome', where he flips into a primal state of mind as a result of stress or some other accompanying factor. He seems to get frequent, piercing headaches, and the world around him often changes in odd ways after these migraines subside. The fact Hannah became so quiet after she was rescued from the mines could imply Graham himself put her there in one of his rages, only to later play the hero against the evils in his mind. I do think the majority of events from chapters 1-4 were real, and were basically a warped attempt by Graham to absolve himself of his previous wrongdoings. Anyway, hope that wasn't too rambly. I'd be curious to hear what others think, to see if I'm barking up the wrong tree or not 👍.

Spoilers!! | V This is a sad, miserable tale of abuse. It makes you go in circles. It makes you wonder if you're everything they said were. You see their examples every step you take. And then, just when you hope you can prove them wrong, one bad move and for a moment, you "prove them right" and its all downhill. Maybe Graham helping the little girl was his redemption? Maybe the loop actually ends with her, and instead he goes off to be swallowed away by his own darkness. For everyone who has ever suffered, sin or without, I wish you seek help someway, somehow.

I think it's an awful commentary on the cycle of abuse. @doodleking4008 ай бұрын
@@GolemCC I agree, for the most part. Not everyone that was abused will end up a monster, but there are still some that do. We try to think it’s easier to generalize and lump everyone together, but it’s not fair. Spoiler I don't think it's an actual loop. I think the end of chapter 4 is the chronological end of the story. Chapter 5 & 6 take place before the events of the start of the game (but you don't learn that until the reveal). Initially you think that chapters 5 and 6 are about Graham trying to find the mother because he promised the girl he would, but in reality he's been obsessed with the mother for some time.

This game is great but I didn't really understand the ending. I get that Graham accidentally killed Ava and the final was pretty much the pre-beginning of the story but... did he stalk Ava (I think the photo in the ship was with that woman)? What promise did he give himself to meet Ava (if not for Hannah)? What did he do to her father? Was he acting like that towards Ava because he was lonely and wanted to date her but his ruined childhood made him so socially crippled. What "she would understand?" And... has Hannah figured out where is her mom and who Graham is? There are a lot of small details that could foreshadow the ending scene, but I kinda couldn't notice all of them.
@fluffytroll50608 ай бұрын
Forgive the massive reply, but here we go: Graham was a stalker that is very mentally unwell. He was taking photos of Ava in secret (she didn't know who he was, but he knew who she was and maybe more about her than she would like for someone she never met). He killed Ava accidentally in an attempt to take control of her, but felt nothing for it besides guilt as if he just.. "made a mistake". Since he grabbed for her throat, its possible he would have intentionally killed her had the accident not happened. Helping Hannah was just him feeling bad for her because he killed her mother and she would have starved there alone without her. He took the left-behind scrap of her clothes and used it to clean his glasses and the girl's face with it, then even gave it to her as a "comfort" token. It was to likely hide the evidence. Which means Graham is much smarter than people think he is. They called him slow but throughout the game he was extremely clever. He hid the truth the whole time. The child had no idea that that man killed her mother, but she picked up on how evil he was when they first met. That something was off with him. It may have happened during his 'episodes' of headaches that she saw him being freaky in the woods as she went searching for her mom. The old man knew that Graham was a creep and he was right the whole time to be defensive towards Graham. It possible her mother also picked up on something not being right or safe in the town because of Graham's stalking behaviors. Like she was trying to be safe from someone and to protect her daughter. She might not know who he was, but stalkers will occasionally let themselves be shown as present in more subtle ways to show their obsession with the person they want. Perhaps he had done that. Perhaps the old man caught onto that too. Graham was likely involved with the mines, and that part I'm not 100% sure what happened. He may have been part of the family man overseeing the mines. I have a hunch he might be the Pelletier boy everyone hates and blames, but he grew up and changed his name. "I'm better. I'm grown up. I'm a man now. She'll understand." He could have changed his identity to find her again. Or...this is a hunch but he also -might-, take this with the tiniest grain of salt, have more than one personality because of what the game reveals is severe child abuse. Multiple Personality Disorder is often the result of severe trauma at an early age as the body's way of coping with unbearable experiences. So he 'blacks out' sometimes for minutes to hours. Maybe Graham is the other personality. He has wolves following him, one that reflected the woman he killed, and two others. This might imply the he had killed two other people before. I'm not 100% sure there. When he picked up Augstin's card, he said how the guy looked like he'd been through a lot, and he, himself was one to talk. He spoke the name in quotes "Augstin", as if that wasn't really that guys name. He seemed to know Ava and wanted to get some sort of forgiveness from her for something in addition to hitting on her which would make sense if he was the Pelletier boy. It's possible the girl realized that Graham was a monster after all. While she was at the Ranger's station, and he was looking for a way out, he blacked out. The ranger he was talking to had disappeared before, but the keys remained. We could hear Ava whistling for help, but when Graham would come into view of the tower, she got really quiet. I'm wondering if she witnessed Graham doing something terrible from the watch tower, and realized it was him who did it when he got closer. That might explain why she ran to find her toy instead of staying and trusting him. She didnt feel safe anymore. That might also explain why she stopped talking to him. She went from extremely excited and mischievous to shut-down. A trip through the cave as a child who isn't afraid of the dark would not have shut her down like that. That's what I got from all that.

Hi! There's no time loop and he didn't have anything to explain to the mom as he hadn't met the girl yet. The story actually starts at chapter 5 and ends at the end of chapter 4 when he drops off the girl at the grandmother's house. Graham's was obsessed with the mom for a long time (that's why he had pictures of her) and thought she was his soul mate. Things went very wrong when they met and he mistakenly killed her (largely down to his inner demons). He then tried to make up for it in some way by getting the kid to safety (in the extras you find out that the note he wrote in red crayon and left in the kid's house just said "I'm sorry").

So chapter 4 is the ending and 5+6 is a prequel, or is this a personal limbo type of situation?

I'm gonna need alot of explanation for my simple mind to understand the story completely. I'm not sure if it's true or not but Graham might just be the kid mentioned in those journals, which means he could be Hannah's unknown father and he came back to the village to try and reconsile with Ava but with one fatal slip took her life and began his entire journey.
@pjewce147 ай бұрын
Graham is definitely not Hannah’s father. They say the Pelletiers son had r*ped Ava and as a result Hannah was born. The journals in the lighthouse and the mine say it- if u put it all together. Also it seems as though Graham had been traveling for a while (from his journals) and ended up in that village, if he was the Pelletiers son he wouldve been there from the start I assume

Nice animation but extremely overused and predictable plot. Seen this same story in so many indi horror games it was obvious from the start. Besides the animation nothing to write homes about it, just above average.

My understanding was that Graham targets people in the hope he can break the cycle of abuse for victims. There is something in the story and that scene in the ship that indicates he knew the character of Ava and the extensive signs of neglect and abuse at Hannah's house

The comment on duct tape being the most useful thing in the universe seems to be commenting on Marvel's Rocket Raccoon and his use of it in the Guardians of the Galaxy cartoon. Quote, "Duct tape is the stuff that binds the universe together.".
