I really wish Henry Selick got more love and recognition for directing this film. Tim Burton wrote the poem and helped design the sets/ characters, but he had very little to do with the actual process of filming the movie. He was busy filming Batman Returns and Ed Wood at the time. Selick is the one who spent 3 years painstakingly bringing this movie to life... only to have everyone think it was made by someone else. As an artist, I can't even imagine how hurtful that must be.
@SpiderandMosquito Жыл бұрын
It is something that I believe burton himself has expressed much resentment towards. Feeling like his name was used more as a brand while the actual filmmaker gets largely forgotten. It's an unfortunate situation.

@Johnny_Socko Жыл бұрын
Tim Burton had always fully intended to direct this movie, it just became impossible when the schedule for Batman Returns started to interfere with the pre-production of Nightmare. Burton hired Danny Elfman, Henry Selick, and writer Caroline Thompson, and he created the initial design studies for the movie. I think he gets the appropriate amount of credit. (Although he did indeed object to Disney naming it "*Tim Burton's* The Nightmare Before Christmas".)
@dante340 Жыл бұрын
@@Johnny_Socko Exactly, Burton was a producer. All of the things you listed are what a producer's job is. They get all the proper pieces and order and set the wheels in motion. It's still not the same thing as actually MAKING the movie. That's where people are often mistaken. No one is denying this film is Burton's brainchild, his creative DNA is well woven into it. But he's simply not the artist who tangibly brought it to life. That's all.

And this also answers whether they didn't get a halloween. As you state - the main part of the movie takes place between the day after Halloween (it starts with them celebrating having just done a successful one) up until Xmas. So no holidays would have been missed.

There's an ending bit that's ONLY in audiobooks: And finally, everything worked out just fine Christmas was saved, though there wasn't much time But after that night, things were never the same Each holiday now knew the other one's name And though that one Christmas, things got out of hand I'm still rather fond of that skeleton man So, many years later, I thought I'd drop in And there was old Jack, still looking quite thin With four or five skeleton children at hand Playing strange little tunes in their xylophone band And I asked old Jack, "Do you remember the night When the sky was so dark and the moon shone so bright? When a million small children pretending to sleep Nearly didn't have Christmas at all, so to speak? And would, if you could, turn that mighty clock back To that long, fateful night, now, think carefully, Jack Would you do the whole thing all over again Knowing what you know now, knowing what you knew then?" And he smiled, like the old Pumpkin King that I knew Then turned and asked softly to me, "Wouldn't you?"

Based on the book by Neil Gaiman and the first film put out by Laika animation studio in Portland (well, outside of PDX, but still). All of their films have been great. Jack is such an interesting character to me. He's clearly kind hearted and charismatic, he has feelings and cares, but he's also blinded by ambition and lacks some common sense. He gets so excited about Christmas, just like a little kid, that he doesn't think about the real world implications of what he's doing. He takes the practices and cultures of another land and basically tries to appropriate them for his own, and all because he's going through a mid-life crisis. The rest of Halloweentown is perfectly content and happy to keep doing what they've been doing, he isn't doing any of this to save the town or something; it's purely for himself. But he never does it out of malevolence, he never tries to manipulate others, and he genuinely cares. His moral lesson in the end is also very Christmas-like: Be thankful for what you have. People would KILL to be in his position, to have his life, and he complains about it like it's a burden. It's very "It's a Wonderful Life" to have him be unhappy with his life until he realizes what he has is a blessing.

Tim Burton wrote the original poem, on which this movie is based. It's "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Xmas" in the same way that people make "Bram Stoker's Dracula" or "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" films. When this aired on TV, I recorded it on VHS, then hooked the VHS audio outputs up to a tape recorder and carefully went through the film, copying the songs to tape. I played that tape to death. Years later, I got the CD, and played that to death too. Like Simone, I can sing every song from memory. Perhaps not word perfect, but pretty damn well. FYI, Sally is not made from dead body parts. She's a ragdoll/scarecrow, which is why she's stuffed with leaves. Several of the townsfolk are based on toys, in addition to the more obvious supernatural creatures.

My favorite character. In England, Helena Bonham Carter sang her music and I was happy seeing her. I had only recently learned the Catherine O'Hara was Sally in the movie. Sally's Song haunted me for 20 years. It was a great great show. When it came time for Sally's Song, I expected Helena to come walking out. When I saw that it was Catherine, I almost jumped into the row in front of me. I swear I have never freaked out so bad under anything as I did at that moment. It was like a dream coming true seeing Catherine O'Hara singing Sally's song. It was a religious experience. In later years, they would do Nightmare before Christmas with a live orchestra. Paul Reubens would be there singing the parts he sang in the movie. I never got to see that. I had moved away. My friend, Bonnie, who was a friend of Paul told me it was one of the best experiences of her life.

I love how Simone knows the whole songs especially the Christmas song

So awesome that you reacted to this. It's for sure one of my favourite childhood movies!

James and the Giant Peach is another like this, even involves a bit of a visual cameo from our favorite Pumpkin King as a Pirate. And Halloweentown in Kingdom Hearts is always my favorite to play!

I saw this at the El Capitan once. There was a museum in the basement with props, models and sets from the film. During the Christmastown sequence, they pumped the smell of gingerbread in the air and at the end of the movie it snowed in the theater.

21:02 *Simone:* _"Having Danny Elfman as Jack is like the most perfect thing ever."_ 👑 I'm guessing you may already know this, but Danny only sings for Jack. His speaking voice is the delightful Prince Humperdink himself. . .Chris Sarandon.🤴

"Did Tim Burton give a bunch of Asian kids slanty eyes?" I mean...it IS Tim Burton*, I wouldn't put that level of racism past the man that thinks only whites can be goth. *Yes I'm aware he only produced the movie.

Tim Burton seems to be a huge fan of the German Impressionism film art style

They still are dressing like Sally to this day for Halloween. 109,440 frames made up this movie. Another really good stop-motion film in the horror-like genre is Coraline. Definitely a must watch if you enjoyed this movie, it's also directed by Henry Selick

1:03 also, in Beetlejuice, by the ending, when he crosses over, there's a Jack Skellington head on top of the carousel. Fun useless trivia.

I HIGHLY recommend the covers VoicePlay and Geoff Castelucci have done of songs from The Nightmare Before Christmas (or anything else they've done, really). Glenn Shadix, also from Beetlejuice (and Demolition Man), was the mayor. Chris Sarandon was Jack's speaking voice, in addition to Barrel (a trick or treater) and the clown with the tear-away face. Paul "Pee Wee Herman" Reubens was Lock, one of the trick or treaters. William Hickey (Uncle Lewis in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation) was Doctor Finkelstein.

You should look for the album Nightmare Revisited. All the songs from this movie redone by popular rock artists when it came out in 2008. Also, VoicePlay does an awesome version of Oogie Boogie's song.

4:12 - So this is stop motion. Everything was done frame by frame in real life. It took them 3 years.

I can honestly say I've never felt so close to Simone on a reaction haha nightmare before Christmas fans rejoice. Now some interesting things about nightmare before Christmas First when it was released it wasn't released under Disney as Disney thought it was too scary so they released it under tombstone pictures in 93 it wasn't until millennials who grew up with it in the 2000's and were trying to find anything related to it that Disney said yes that's our movie. Second oogie boogie was originally supposed to be doctor finklestein but due to tim Burton accidentally knocked a hole in one of the sets they changed it to him being a bag of bugs. Finally lock the devil kid was voiced by pee wee Herman and barrel the skeleton kid was voiced by Danny elfman.

Most people don't know that this movie was directed NOT by Tim Burton, but Henry Selick. He's the brains behind the incredible stop-motion, visuals, camera work...he also directed Coraline. He doesn't get the credit that he obviously deserves. ❤
