RIP to the late, great Ken Page. We lost him on September 30 this year and I’m still in disbelief. He gave us countless amazing performances as Oogie Boogie in theme parks, video games, etc for 31 years. He made an immortal staple of Halloween all on his own and sang Oogie’s Song like it was the first time every single time. Rest well, King of Seven Holidays.

And even better, he gave us a live performance of Poor Unfortunate Souls that knocked it out of the park. A tragedy we didn't get to enjoy a full cover album of villain songs. But, he gave us what he could. And for that, we are grateful for this legend.

"He seems scary." I think this is one of my FAVORITE aspects about Jack. His dichotomy. He can be terrifying when he needs to be. Scaring Locke, Shock and Barrel into submission. He's earned the title Pumpkin King by being terrifying to humans. But he's also gentlemanly. Even tempered. Kind. Whereas Oogie frightens people through harm, Jack would never do such a thing. You'd probably feel quite safe with him. However. He is the Pumpkin King for a reason. So Aaron pointing out his more creepy tendencies? Like spider-like crawling, the table flip...heck. Even him on the angel statue is a haunting image...it's pretty spot on. Jack is easily my favorite Disney character right after Mickey himself. And TNBC is my favorite movie of all time. It's what got me into film. I'm always glad to see people react to it. One of my favorite shots in the film is that 360 camera shot of Jack on the angel statue; how they did that I have no idea. Because it's stop motion. They would've had to maneuver Jack himself as well as move the camera. It's insane to think about.
@RoderickThe139 күн бұрын
I love that when Jack is at his lowest point, he's just like "You know what? I tried my best, and I failed but at least I had fun". He doesn't need anyone to tell him that. It's so simple, but so inspiring.

I think it is obvious that the residents of Halloweentown go out to the real world on Halloween and the opening song is them all coming back to Halloweentown and celebrating the day. They are giving out rewards like who sucked the most blood and such. If the real world will openly accept that an imposter Santa was ruining Christmas and then the REAL Santa saves it, then they probably accept monsters and ghosts being around on Halloween.

I like to imagine they roll around like the Wild Hunt, luring people to join in their roving revelry.
@ZealStarMedia8 күн бұрын
Yeah the residents of the holiday towns seem capable of traveling to the real world to make their holidays happen, it’s just specifically the tree doors that are for traveling between the holidays. Jack can go to and from the real world, but he’s not allowed into Christmas Town without using the door. Towns themselves seem more like “realms” rather than physical locations.

Spoiler for the Nightmare Before Christmas book about Sally: "Long Live the Pumpkin Queen". Dr. Finkelstein didn't create Sally. He'd tried and failed to make a daughter. He used a book of long forgotten towns, and went to 'Dream Town' to study their plants. He came across a young ragdoll, Sally. He created a plan to pass her off as his 'creation' to gain respect as a mad scientist, so he kidnapped her and took her back to his lab. He pulled out all of her cotton stuffing and replaced it dry autumn leaves, used his plants to wipe her memory, and then passed her off as his creation. That's why he was so strict about not letting her go anywhere, he couldn't risk her remembering the truth outside of his laboratory. That's probably why she didn't react the like the rest of Halloween Town Residents about the Spooky Christmas, she's not originally not from Halloween Town. In the new book she learns the whole truth, and Jack ends up basically banishing Dr. Finkelstein to dream land, where he has to work for Sally's parents, the Governors of Dream Land, paying off his 'debt', and Sally gets unrestricted access to his lab and gardens until the end of time.

Jack wasn't reallyx bored of Halloween, he just felt off, he thought doing something new would be the solution, but he was really just lonely. It was when he finds Sally that last time that he comes to his senses. I don't think the movie was saying "stay in your lane", Jack was a professional, the best there is, but he was alone. Sharing what you love, finding the one, etc, that might be more the spirit of it.

Fun fact: The official soundtrack for Nightmare Before Christmas has an extra track: a bit of extra narration from Patrick Stewart bookending the one from the opening that was meant to be in the credits or the ending but was cut for whatever reason. The narration, which is revealed to be Santa himself, says that Santa came back to Halloween Town many years later to visit Jack. In that time, he found out that he and Sally had started a family ('4 or 5 skeleton children at hand, playing strange tunes in their xylophone band'). The poetic narration concludes: And I asked old Jack, do you remember the night When the sky was so dark, and the moon shone so bright? When a million small children pretending to sleep Nearly didn’t have Christmas at all, so to speak? And would, if you could, turn that mighty clock back To that long fateful night-now think carefully, Jack! Would you do the whole thing all over again, Knowing what you know now, knowing what you knew then? And he smiled like the old Pumpkin King that I knew, Then turned and asked softly of me… _“Wouldn’t you?”_

Nightmare Before Christmas is a Thanksgiving movie. It begins in the last like, five minutes of Halloween and ends on December 25th. The entire movie is about the transitory time between both holidays, the ambiguity of that time period both in season and in life, and the concept of thankfulness, whether it's for being the Pumpkin King or for your best friend turned lover. It may thematically be Halloween and/or Christmas, but it's a Thanksgiving movie.

43:40 - Let me call your attention to the first bridge of _This Is Halloween:_ "Tender lumplings everywhere, life's no fun without a good scare. That's out job, but we're not mean in our town of Halloween." Halloweentown is about the rollercoaster adrenaline rush of fear, not the debilitating, soul-crushing terror that comes before death and dismemberment. That's where Oogie is different. He enjoys causing misery and death. That's why he's an outcast in Halloweentown.

Danny Elfman wrote all the songs and the music for the film(10 songs) and sang the main character Jack Skellington and multiple others. Disney movies back then had a song writer and a different person for the score and most only had 5 songs! Danny Elfmans the reason this movie cooks!

This movie has a video game prequel and sequel, The Pumpkin King and Oogie's Revenge respectively. As far as how the worlds work, I like to imagine that there's two versions: a world of conceptual ideas and one of specific holidays. "Halloween", or just a general idea of a day where the veil between our world and the next is thinnest, is present in multiple cultures. Because of this, Halloween Town is basically like a template for "scary things" that reaches out into the real world. It's why Jack is known in Kentucky, England, France, etc. These are just ideas of spookiness and horrors in the night that originate from Halloween Town but reach into other cultures without needing to physically go there. But Christmas, with Santa and all, is VERY specific. It doesn't have the same kind of primordial reach that "scary things" as a base idea has. And so, Santa has to go out into the world to get the job done manually, rather than throw these concepts and ideas. He has to physically enter the real world and not just let his influence spread.

It's also important to note that Boogie would have NEVER made a move on trying to take out Jack under normal circumstances, he was terrified of him and his power/popularity and knew he wouldn't be able to get away with it.
