Smitty's death hits hard asf. He lived his whole life as an orphan and never was loved by anyone, and then he just died there, in the midst of the chaos with no purpose in his life, miserable, scared...

Smitty did have a purpose, even if he didn't fully realize it. He was Doss's gun. His protector. He saved Doss, and in turn Doss saved the lives of over 75 men. Without Smitty, those men wouldn't have gotten the chance to be saved.
@noonze1

One of my favorite scenes in the movie. Smitty had the courage to admit to Doss that he misjudged him and, in doing so, conveyed his admiration and respect for Doss's bravery. While his life was clearly tragic, he died a hero in one of the most consequential battles in history, with Doss there to pray for and comfort him.

PTSD as an official diagnosis with treatment (not just shell shock or gross stress reaction) didn't exist until 1980. The lack of knowledge and resources people had to treat the non-physical wounds is almost as upsetting as the actual experiences themselves.

He would'nt talk about combat, but one of the few things he said was his buddy he met in boot camp was killed by a German sniper their first night on the front line. Another one was a a friend from his squad who survived to V-E Day but died 3 days later, they all got drunk and he fell off a truck and was crushed by the wheels. He didn't drink often but when he did my dad hit the bottle hard.

I think it's the body's reaction to shock/a near miss to flood you with endorphins at the relief of being alive.
