The majority of NBA fans really don't have any idea what they're talking about when it comes to the 60-80s greatest players. People never watched full games from these eras. People ALWAYS throw Magic-Bird next to each other and Wilt-Russel next to each without having any idea of how good they actually are. A great way to tell apart casual fans from more knowledgeable fans is if you ask someone their top 10 list and they put Magic right in front of Bird because "it's what everyone else does" or "his resume is better". Realistically, Magic is the 5-6th best player player of all time while Bird lies in the 8-9th range. Between them are players like Shaq, Curry, etc. Wilt's scoring seems impressive but when you consider the fact that 1. he averages 10-12 more minutes played per game with 2. below average efficiency to me he's always been what KD currently is if KD had won a ring with his Thunder squad and won another MVP - a great player who fills the stat sheet, is a model of consistency but couldn't consistent get over the hump again without Jerry West. He would be the 10th best player of all time in my book. Secondly, Bill Russell is highly overrated. Not a top 10 player of all time. If you actually watch any of the games he does not pass the eye test at all. His basic stats are underwhelming (compare them with any other player AFTER you adjust them per 36 and you'll see). You can argue that 11 rings is 11 rings but every advanced metric tells a different story. If he is the most winning player of all time why is he 32nd on WS/48. Bill Russell got lucky. He's not a top 50 'best' player of all time. For 'greatest' of all time, I'll give him a top 15 mention but that mf had a lucky career. Between Wilt (at my 10th) and Russell (15th) are Hakeem, Robertson (I view him the same way I view Wilt), KD and Malone.

It depends on how you measure greatness. I think Larry is better than Magic, but magic has more championships. Larry was better at scoring, shooting, defending, and rebounding, and his passing was good, but not as good as Magic. Bird played in a very stacked Eastern conference and didn't have Kareem on his team. I think Bird would've had more rings if he was drafted to the Lakers. But at the same time, this is just hypotheticals. It's hard to say.

I would say Bill Russell is one of those weird ones. He has 11 rings, but this was at a time when there were fewer teams. And they had different rules on players trading and things like that. So teams could just have the same players on them year after year, making it hard for other teams to get good players. But, in my opinion, Russ has a lot of natural talent and a strong work ethic, but if he played now he wouldn't do well. However, if he grew up in the modern era, then how good could he be? We'll never know.
