Enthusiasts complain all the old true sports cars are behind them, resale prices are crazy, and just want car makers to remake old cars. And here we are with an old car made again.

My first car was a 79 280zx followed by a 76 280z. I love the styling of this new Z, however the weight really holds it back. I test drove one when I was shopping for a new sports car and liked the driving dynamics of the GR86 over the new Z by far. So I bought a 22 Neptune blue GR86. Eventually sold the GR86 and now I have a project 91 na Miata. I hope the next gen Z gets its own platform and can drop a few hundred pounds.
@ShenmueAtheist4 ай бұрын
A lot of the lower 0-60 and some of the twitchiness you described has to do with the base model having no LSD. People really discount how much an LSD improves grip in turns and off the line acceleration. I think installing an LSD is a must if you get the Sport model (aka the base model). It's a lot cheaper too than paying an extra 10k for the Performance trim, and WAAAY cheaper than paying 25k more for a Nismo.

I think id personally go that route too. This car seems to be best bought as a blank canvas for mods. Maybe a decent sports touring car with the performance grade…

Really is the weight that holds this car imo. Shane they haven't been profitable for years because if they were profitable i have no doubt they would make extremely competitive cars. Unfortunately they dont have the budget to do anything great by using a sedan chassis for a sports car. Shaving 2-300 lbs woudl do wonders.

A 280Z was the second car I ever owned so many years ago. It was a lot of fun then but I'm sure it would feel like an antique now. I certainly won't try to recapture my youth with the new Z. Good review though...as always.

Everyone can knock the FM chassis but when it came out it was putting heat on the e46. And Nissan is literally (made up) 10th the size of bmw. And Nissan does what Nissan does. The gave us a new Z and it isn't complicated to operate or heavy with tech and stuff you don't need. This Z falls in line with every new z from the 80s.its not cheap it's not the best. It is what it is. And it's pretty special for that and yes I agree. I think Nissan assumes guys will modify the car..
@X-21-d8l2 ай бұрын
The Z honors its heritage. It is authentic and does not purport to be something that it is not. Take a look at used BMWs. There is a reason why they are so cheap. Comparing the Supra and the Z is not the correct comparison. The Supra is not JDM. BMW generally has made fast, well performing cars but you wouldn’t want one after the lease is over or the warranty runs out. The Supra is actually a parts bin BMW. The exterior is not good and lacks cohesion in its design. The interior is cramped, vision is very limited and the steering wheel is laughable. The Z is set up to be more of a sport-tourer out of the box. It’s plenty fast to get into trouble, it’s beautiful to look at, it has a very good manual and with reasonable care, you can hold onto and enjoy it for a long time to come.

Is it just me... or does 3,500 lbs for this Z seem just WAAAAAYYY overweight? It's a V6, 2 Door, 2 Seat Hatch RWD Coupe. Not V8. Not 4 Door. Not 4 / 5 seats. Not AWD / 4x4. So what gives? No reason for this car to weigh in at over 2,900 lbs stock.

21+yr old platform with a 8-9yr old engine. I had really hoped that Nissan would have given the VR30 a revision before putting it into the Z. The fact that a mild tune will get 440-450 from it but NISMO only got 420 says a lot about how much Nissan cares anymore.
@hartsickdisciple4 ай бұрын
It's not a 21 year-old platform. It's a revised version of a 15 year-old platform. 370z and 350z weren't built on the same platform. 350z was built on FM gen 1, and 370z was built on FM gen 2. 370z had a substantially shorter wheelbase, which is shared with the new Z. The bottom line is that the car is solid, fun to drive, and looks great. It really doesn't matter how old the components are.
@Realistick4 ай бұрын
FM2 was still a heavily revised FM1 platform though, no? I don’t think old bones are the issue, I think they could have done a much better job of bringing the pieces together and dialing them in for the new car.

It’s just a polarizing car, I think they’ll be sought after used but it doesn’t feel very dialed in out of the box. Like Nissan grabbed a bunch of different parts and an old chassis to make it, but then didn’t take the extra time to get the fine tuning right. Some really good sides to it but most new car buyers want something a little more polished in my opinion. Not like the Supra sells well either though…

The 240Z was based on the Ferrari 250 GTO. I read a kit car review once that said the windshield glass from a 240Z was nearly identical to the original Ferrari's. Each new iteration of the Z got bigger and heavier, in part to overcome the emissions regulations of the day. Nowadays, a rearwheel drive car that heavy just doesn't interest me, and the 'old' cars like the 240Z (and '60's Mustangs/Cobras/etc) just aren't as safe as today's cars. AND I'm spoiled by things like power windows/doors & heated seats! (and air bags!) We truly are living in a great time to be a car enthusiast! (and Volvo just reversed course on EV's! LOL)
