The unboxing video can be viewed here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaalf5hpjpd8d9E . Dr. White's comments about 1 Peter 3.14-15 and Isaiah 8.12-13 can be viewed here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXfOgYaOiMqBb5I . (By the way, he mentions that 'sanctify' in 1 Peter 3.15 should have been in all caps. It actually was in all caps in the 1973 and 1963 editions of the NASB. I don't have a copy of the 1975 edition, so I can't check that one. But by 1977, 'sanctify' was in lowercase type.)

@@pmachapman - thanks, Peter! So the change occurred in '75 edition. If it's not too much trouble, would you mind letting me know how Amos 3.2 reads in the '75 edition? In '73, it contained an obvious typo: "You only have Me among all the families of the earth;". But in the '77 edition, 'Me' has been replaced by 'I chosen', and a footnote has been added to explain that 'chosen', rendered literally, is 'known'.

Fine review Grant. I think the purpose of this bible is the font size. If it had the same size font and wider margins all around I don't think anyone would buy it. It would certainly be too big for me by far. I think they made the OK choices in order to give us a wide margin with large text. I wouldn't write in the inside margin anyway due to the gutter roll off.Also I don't want a huge amount of space on the margin. If I wanted more I would buy a journaling bible personally. I ordered this bible. Consider placing affiliate links from christainbook in the description for the bibles you review, Many of us will use those for our purchases to support your work.

I would wish that Nelson would simply go back to the well, instead of the drawing board. The renewal of the past decades of a wide margin reference Bible with a center column references, would be exceptional.

Hi Grant, thank you for another fine review. I have the Nelson NKJV that came out a yr or two ago & l’m really pleased with it. Apparently a NKJV Bible with a textual note at Genesis 1:5 reading, “Lit, And evening was and morning was, a day, one” is a Bible with a full collection of NKJV translation notes. I understand this Bible has that note. Blessings, John

Thanks, Sylvain! Those are interesting possibilities. The Darby translation, in particular, may be worth acquiring. I base that on a review I recall seeing at A Victorious Church's channel a couple of years ago. Regarding Dake's edition, it's fairly expensive -- and it has very small print, doesn't it? I'll likely avoid that one. But the Ruckman and Common Man editions are possibilities.

Thank you for your fine review. Some modern translations of the Bible, including the New King James Version, have removed the Author's name entirely from the pages of His own book, that Author being Almighty God, which, in English, is most commonly pronounced as Jehovah. The four letters of God's name, commonly known as the tetragrammaton, appear in the ancient, original Hebrew holy scriptures 6,828 times as YHWH or JHVH. This is because the ancient Hebrews did not write their vowels, but provided them as they read the text. Later Jewish copyists or scribes, when copying the Hebrew scriptures, began the practice of substituting God's name with titles, replacing His holy name with words such as Lord, the Lord, Adonai or God, and this practice was applied to later copies of the Greek Septuigent translation and others. Jehovah's name was first restored by William Tyndale. In 1530 he published a translation of the of the first 5 books of the Bible into English, which included Jehovah's name once in Ex. 6:3. In a note in this edition, Tyndale wrote: "Jehovah is God's name...Moreover, as oft as thou sayest LORD in great letters (except where there is an error in printing) it is the Hebrew Jehovah." From this the practice arose among translators to use Jehovah's name in just a few places. This practice was adopted by the translators of the Authorized King James Version in 1611, where Jehovah's name appears only 4 times, namely, in Ex. 6:3; Ps. 83:18; Isa. 12:2; 26:4. The 1611 KJV reads at Psalms 83:18, "That men may know that thou, whose name alone is Jehovah, art the most high over all the earth." It is clear from this verse and many others throughout scripture that it is God's will that his name be made known throughout the earth, to all mankind. Some newer translations, including the 1903 / 1929 American Standard Version, have honored the Almighty God and Creator by restoring His name to it's rightful place in His word.

According to my local Bible seller, Thomas-Nelson have started to up their game, after letting Holman loose with the NKJV to do some innovative settings (which they did! - several friends of mine love their NKJV Study Bible, and for a while I could only get B&H NKJVs at my local store). I think Thomas Nelson are steadily improving, but I still see too many things I don't like in this setting - simple stuff like the cross references in a pile at the bottom and the margins being not wide enough or around the page. Thank you once again for the in depth review!
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting, Peter! I agree -- Thomas Nelson Bibles have improved greatly compared to the ~2000 time frame. I wish they could find an inexpensive source of opaque paper with a matte surface, but that may be too much to ask for these days. I completely agree with you about the page-bottom, paragraph-style references. I think that's done for aesthetics, under the assumption that most Bible purchasers don't use the references anyway. But I believe a similar assumption -- that most Bible purchasers don't read their Bibles anyway -- led to the poor quality Bibles (glued bindings, pink letters, tight line spacing) of a few years back. I hope publishers see the light and give us more designs that improve the accessibility and utility of the references, even if it means that pages aren't as tidy as they might wish them to be. Upon reflection, I believe my initial reaction to this edition would have been much more favorable had Nelson simply left the words 'wide margin' out of the title.
@pmachapman
@pmachapman 3 жыл бұрын
@@RGrantJones I agree with your comment that perhaps Bibles were constructed without much care for regular reading - the drive to lower costs meant that something seemingly like the old "as long as it fails outside of the warranty period" mentality took hold. I also wonder whether increased layout automation has meant that items like cross references are dumped on the page, because no one has the time to manually align them in a centre column close to the verse - that's my suspicion for the newer ESV layouts anyway.

That's a very difficult question, Jordan! Assuming that the rest of my library wasn't beached with me, I think I'd like to have a good study Bible. The overall built quality of the Bible is very good. The gold gilding is very shiny, a mirror finish. But that's where my like of the Bible stops. The greatest disappointment is the lack of a gutter margin and I will forever believe that references were made for the centre column. If they aren't going to be placed in the centre column then they should at least be separated from the foot notes. The columns I agree are too broad. They could have been narrower which would then allow for a wider gutter margin. I will pass on this one, which is very disappointing indeed as I was so looking forward to this Bible. Also since I've watch your NASB and NKJV vs the ESV videos, I've spent the 3 months reading the ESV and I must admit that I've grown to love it a lot. So much so that I've purchased one, the ESV Reference Bible because it has centre column references and translation notes at the bottom of the page. It does have red letters, but I've not gotten it yet so I don't know how that will go. It only cost $10 so that's no problem. I'll let you know what I think about it when I get it. All in all I'm disappointed with this bible and hope for some improvements on it. Thanks again for saving me the money of purchasing this.

@@RGrantJones Your most welcomed. Spending money on anything at all, especially something this important as the Bible, you want to know that you've spent your hard earned money well. If I bought this NKJV Bible as it is, I'd still be looking for a another one, what I'd call "the one". Funny enough, the ESV Reference Bible is the one that comes closest to the one for me, why, because it is double column, paragraph, centre column reference Bible with translation notes set apart from the references. It has a decent concordance, and quite a few maps and illustrations at the back. Pronouns for diety are not capitalized and the font seems decent. I can't comment on the font yet, it's said to be 9 point and dark, but I'll wait to see to see that for myself. Maybe a 10 point would be ideal and their Lexicon font is very easy to read when it's dark. As this ESV Reference Bible is now, there's in my mind only two things or three things that's makes it not the one for me and that is it has red letter text (I can live with that if the red is dark enough), and I wished it had more detailed and extensive book introductions with ooutlines like the Open Bible does and the third thing would maybe be a slightly more robust concordance. That in a well bound cover, premium or synthetic, would be my "the one for me" Bible. As far as I know, this is the only Bible that Crossway does not have an all black letter edition of. It normally takes 2 to 6 weeks for shipments from the US via economy shipping to get to Jamaica were I live, and its been a week since it was shipped. So I'll update you then.
