I would love to see an iteration on this design utilising the 18650 battery cell, since they are much easier to come around in general (you can extract 4-6 of them from almost any laptop)

A nice addition to future versions could be a GPIO pin that goes high when the battery is low so that the Pi can shutdown safely.

3 ideas. 1: Give the pocket server a larger wireless antenna or modding the PCB into an antenna. 2: Being able to plug in a micro USB power line without pulling it out of the case. You could add a cap to the port so no debris comes in. 3: Adding a heat sink with a mesh on the top or sides for breathing.
@veloctic79025 жыл бұрын
maybe an antenna you can attach to the case itself, that folds out for the sake of saving space?

Is it possible to run it for mesh networking? I'm thinking that it would be nice to have this running as a mesh node for simple signed text routing, or maybe even as a cheap Delay-tolerant network node.

Wouldn't it be better to use rachargable AA batteries? It will add to the thickness, but swapping them out would be easy peasy.

I got thinking today about a credit card-sized PCB crystal radio, where the card itself has a coil antenna printed on it with some sort of trimmer cap and headphone jack built into the side, plus the handful of passives for detecting and filtering. I thought this sounded a little like something up your alley since your PCB designs are pretty neat and serve interesting purposes (like those pogo pins). Anyhow, nice project.

Very nice design. I've laid out the powerboost circuit on a phat/daughter board in eagle cad if you are interested. I've been meaning to put it in GitHub for a while. I don't think the battery and boost/charge components would fit on one side, but there is spare space for additional circuitry. I hooked the PB low battery signal to gpio via transistor, and have an spst slide switch connecting to the PB circuit's enable input. I also put a momentary button and a signal LED so you can program a basic user interface, and I have some reusable python code to monitor the button and low battery pins, and drive the LED.
@Nono-hk3is6 жыл бұрын
P.s. with the charge chip on the PB circuit, I think you just change one of the resistor values to control the charge current.
@Nimbos06 жыл бұрын
Since the charge controller has to be on for it to charge, does that mean you could use the battery as an uninterruptible supply?
The downloadable project document on the web page wont open, it's downloaded as a docx and no word possessor (Microsoft word, google doc) that i use can open it stating that the file must be corrupt. Can any one help? I want to make this

Hey N-O-D-E, I really like your design! It really got me thinking what if you design a portable raspberry PI computer that optimizes your slide in design and if your slide in design works well on this you could incorporate it in some of your other designs. I would really like to hear your opinion and thoughts.

Why not use a simple TP4056 for the charging? Pretty much does everything other than boost the voltage for the Pi. How is charging even managed here?

Ha, came in so fast this time the video wasn't available. Wonder if there's an easy way to send the battery charge level to the server so it can be monitored easily.
@Nono-hk3is6 жыл бұрын
The lack of adc on the pi makes that difficult. The adafruit powerboost provides a digital signal that goes low when the battery dips to 3.2 volts. I've laid out their powerboost circuit on a phat/bonnet form factor and made sure to attach that signal to a gpio pin. Eevblog just posted a video about microcontrollers for $US0.05 (yes, five cents) that have an adc and an spi interface. (The video title refers to three cent uCs, but the three cent ones don't have an adc.) If he posts more research on how to work with them I'll use one to measure voltage on a pi board.

And btw... I would love to see a simular solution, but with 4G modem and support for an external antenna, with support for sharing the 4G connection through the Pi W's WiFi, or with a dogle - but still with support for filesharing/whatever, from the Pi 😁...

look into projects like pirate box, or library box. Other uses could be things like a wardriving logger, mini personal cloud storage device. anything you can think of that could be done on a little headless computer. even something just as a portable linux shell with wireless AP to access it. Lots and lots of uses. I keep a pi in my bag with piratebox on it. The next step in the sneakernet is here.
